Thursday, August 31, 2006Pluto, the Bomb, Terrorism and Ceres "Birth of the Earth" by Colleen-Joy PageWith my Mercury (thoughts and communication) in Scorpio (ruled by Pluto), Pluto's naturally been on my mind (Mercury) a lot in a moderately obsessive (Pluto/Scorpio) way. To me the interesting thing isn't Pluto's so-called "demotion" (because how can the Lord of Death be demoted?). It's the addition of Ceres to the mix. I'll be writing more about the whole Virgo/Cancer debate later, but there are some interesting facts about Ceres/Demeter and her relationship to the underworld that may be significant. Of course Ceres/Demeter is best known for the tale in which her daughter Persephone/Kore was abducted by Hades/Pluto into the underworld, but Ceres/Demeter herself was instrumental in the concept of resurrection. (The Romans adopted the Greek gods and the names were changed but the myths remained virtually identical.) Barbara Walker's amazing book The Secrets of the Tarot reveals that Demeter's principal temple, Eleusis, was the site of resurrection rituals that may have been the precursor to the Christian myths. Demeter was the Mistress of Earth and Sea, promising to multiply loaves and fishes; her savior-son of various names was called the "Liberator". During the rituals of the Eleusinian mysteries the seed of Dionysus was killed (reaped), buried (planted) and resurrected (sprouted), with his flesh eaten as bread and his blood drunk as wine. (Sound familiar?) During the ritual, the priestess and hierophant perform the "Great Rite," re-enacting the coupling between Demeter and Zeus which conceived the child Dionysus. This Great Rite was thought to bring about the regeneration of the earth and the forgiveness of sins. During Christian times Demeter was informally canonized as St. Demetra who according to legend also had a daughter, kidnapped this time by a wicked Turkish wizard. When a young man tries to rescue Demetra's daughter he is captured and dismembered, and Demetra resurrects him so that her daughter can be rescued. Pluto's discovery in 1930 brought with it the introduction of the atomic bomb and the fear of ultimate annhilation, the ultimate power. In these days of terrorism when a single individual with a toiletry bottle can potentially wipe out thousands of people, our concept of power is changing. In centuries past, whichever country had the biggest guns had the most power. When the US was the only nation with the bomb we were the only superpower. When Russia developed the bomb, they were the other superpower. At this time nine nations have nuclear weapons, with several more to attain that status soon (including Iran). The whole concept of power, as embodied in the archetype of Pluto, is changing and this will become very clear in the 2010-2013 square of Uranus in Aries to Pluto in Capricorn. The power of Pluto hasn't lessened one iota, but it has become universalized rather than being owned by just a few countries and individuals. Perhaps this is symbolized by the reclassification of Pluto as a dwarf planet, a status shared by many others. Perhaps too the introduction of Ceres/Demeter into the Plutonic archetype offers hope for resurrection and regeneration from Pluto's threat of total destruction. Bush has denied any attempt that Iran has made to communicate with the US, so this is not likely to occur; however, it does make a textbook example of the dynamic between Mars and Pluto. Mars represents the will of the individual ego to assert itself - it operates as our individual drive and aggressive instincts. Pluto acts from the deeper instincts beyond the ego, and consequently the anger and rage of Pluto is much deeper and comes from impulses that have long been buried without expression. When Mars squares Pluto in the current planetary cycle, the personal will of Mars becomes more fearless as it comes into conflict with the instinctual aggressive instinct of Pluto. Both Ahmadinejad and Bush have Mars unaspected in their charts (see this earlier article for more information about Ahmadinejad's chart) showing their rebellious nature which makes it difficult to temper their aggressive instincts. The current Mars/Pluto square is forming a T-square to the Venus/Jupiter conjunction in Ahmadinejad's chart and increasing his confidence and arrogance in stretching the boundaries of his relationships - in this case, with other world leaders. In the past few days he has rejected the UN ultimatum and vowed to continue Iran's path towards nuclear technology, inaugurating a new nuclear reactor plant in defiance of world opinion. He declared Saturday that the world must accept Iran as a powerful country in its own right. Over the next year as Saturn in Leo opposes Neptune in Aquarius, issues of "who is in charge" (Leo) will come to the forefront. I'll write more on this later, but Iran is certainly a prime example of what we have to look forward to. Last week I saw a client (let's call her Sylvia) whose birthchart demonstrates the power of Pluto. Sylvia's Sun is in the hard-working sign of Capricorn: Capricorns typically have a difficult life when they're young but because they're such hard workers (ruled by the Celestial Taskmaster himself, Saturn) they can be quite powerful as they age and incorporate life's lessons. She also has a Grand Trine including Mars, Jupiter and her Moon, bestowing a sense of inner trust (Jupiter/Moon) that life has meaning as well as a dynamic will (Mars/Jupiter) for self-preservation (Mars/Moon). These are the tools that have helped her to navigate a difficult life that has been Pluto's gift to her. Note to astrologers: to protect her privacy I will not be posting her chart. Pluto in the astrological chart shows where we come face to face with the underworld of our emotions: fear, compulsion, obsession. Pluto often shows where we face the cold reality of death in order to come to a greater understanding of life. Astrologer Liz Greene says that Pluto represents the essential life force in nature that often must destroy in order to survive. The power of Pluto is that basic, and that intense. When we're in the middle of a Plutonic disaster (our spouse leaves us, we lose our job, our house burns down, our cat dies) we are lost in the underworld of our fear and the pain of loss that is Pluto's realm. But once the storm has passed we find ourselves rebuilding the wreckage of our lives with a new sense of empowerment that comes from having faced our fears and survived. Pluto is conjunct Sylvia's ascendant (persona and identity) within one degree, exactly opposite Venus (relating to others and love of self) which is therefore conjunct the descendant (cusp of the seventh house of partnership). Any planet on the ascendant (rising) expresses itself through the personality, and Pluto rising often is a person who is intimidating and can be a bit of a bully. However, when two planets are opposite (180 degrees) each other, often the individual will express the energy of the planet at one end but project the other planet onto others in her life. This is particularly true when we are dealing with two planets in opposition that fall on the ascendant/descendant axis of personal identity/relationship identity. Sylvia was born into a family of violence. Her father beat her on a regular basis, blaming her for deserving it. She grew up in fear for her life as her father, embodying Pluto on the identity axis, annhilated her sense of Self. Her Venus is on the cusp of the seventh house, making her extremely attractive and desirable and she easily escaped her home life by marrying at a very young age. Unfortunately, she attracted the exact dynamic to her and the beatings continued, this time from her husband. She escaped again from this marriage and since then has worked hard to learn from her experiences and make choices that will empower her in ways that she never knew. Saturn, that Celestial Taskmaster, squares Chiron (wounding and healing) in her chart which has throughout her life forced her to confront her pain and learn its lessons and the Grand Trine in air signs (the ultimate harmonious chart dynamic) has been a tool through which she can process her experiences and learn from them. (Oprah Winfrey also has a Grand Trine in air signs.) Now, in midlife, Sylvia is a woman with a strong resolve and a great deal of personal power, although she is still working on facing her fears. Her chart is a good representation for the Plutonic dynamics of fear, violence and ultimate empowerment. It also demonstrates how powerfully Pluto operates in the birthchart, and that will certainly remain no matter how Pluto's classification changes. Monday, August 28, 2006More violence with Mars/PlutoThe square between Mars and Pluto won't be exact until tomorrow night, but the past few days have seen increased violence around the world. From the news today:
When Mars (personal will and aggression) and Pluto (death, rebirth and transformation) square off it's never pretty and it doesn't matter what the astronomers think. With Saturn and Neptune in conflict as well the ride is going to be bumpy for the next few weeks. Fortunately Jupiter is just about exactly trine to Uranus which will bring opportunities (Jupiter) for new ways of doing things and original thinking (Uranus). This could enable the conflicts that are going on to end up with some meaningful change if the parties involved can resist getting stuck in the old patterns of behavior. Neptune's job is to dissolve those patterns that Saturn builds, which in today's world could be a good thing after all. Sunday, August 27, 2006Mars/Pluto ushers in the Saturn Neptune opposition![]() Mars is approaching an exact square to Pluto on August 29, a stressful conflict between the personal will (Mars) and the will of the higher self (Pluto). Power conflicts are highlighted now. If you find yourself involved in conflicts at this time, utilize the outlet of physical activity to help to release some of the energy that builds up during the faceoff of Mars to Pluto. On the positive side though, there is a tremendous amount of power that can be activated now. Try to focus your intention now on internalizing these energies and deepening your own sense of inner power. The Saturn/Neptune cycle is associated with economics (particularly money and oil), as well as flu epidemics and diseases which are mysterious (Neptune) and affect the social structures (Saturn).
The opening square of the current cycle which took place between Saturn in Taurus and Neptune in the first degrees of Aquarius began in June of 1998. Squares are more stressful than conjunctions, and that year witnessed the following:
The opposition is the culmination point of the waxing phase, and the issues from the waxing phase will reach a head. With Saturn in Leo, there will continue to be crises in government (Leo) as the question of who is in charge becomes even more mysterious under Neptune's influence. Image from Gaian Tarot This is one of the questions astrologers are most frequently asked. We would all like to imagine that life is like a bus tour, with a preordained set of stops along the way. When do we arrive in Paris? When do we land in Cairo? We feel that if we only knew WHEN we would find our soulmate/ our true calling/ success in our business/ conceive a child then we could relax and stop worrying. Unfortunately, the journey of life does not unfold this way. I was single for nearly ten years, and as an astrologer I looked for signs that I would soon find the "right" one. Jupiter, planet of abundance and possibilities, passing through my seventh house of partnership? No. Venus, goddess of love, making a trine to my Moon and bringing relationship to ease my lonely heart? No again. Neptune, bringing us face to face with our soul, passing over Venus in my chart to bring my true soulmate partnership? Nope, not this time. Though I wasn't aware at the time, each of these planetary cycles brought with them a greater understanding and greater connection within me that was planting the seeds to enable me to find and recognize the partner that I met and married years later. I believe and know at a cellular level that the Universe, or God, or Spirit listens to us when we say that we want to find the RIGHT partner -- the partner that we will connect with at the soul level. Once we make that intention, we are being prepared to be able to receive and give love at the deepest level and not settle for a quick fix. Often we feel that we want a partner to complete us, but until we are connected with our own soul and self we will not be able to realize that deep soul connection with another. I have seen with my clients, and in my own history, that if the soulmate relationship is elusive it usually indicates that the individual is still growing and evolving. The truth is, until we reach a point where we have become better integrated on a psychological level and more balanced spiritually, our relationships with others will reflect our own imbalance even if we have found our soul partner. In the meantime, relationships are our best teachers. Many of us have been married more than once, but I would never call these "failed" marriages. I believe there are no failures or bad choices; merely lessons on the way to success. Even after we have found and married our soul partner we continue to face challenges that require us to expand our awareness and become more integrated within ourselves. For this reason, astrology cannot predict when we will find our partner for the soul's journey, but it can help to identify the places within us where we are out of balance so that we are better able to approach all of our relationships in a stronger and more complete way. Friday, August 25, 2006Trivial Nonsense MemeI wondered what a "meme" really is besides a way for bloggers to get to know each other, so I looked it up: a neologism that first appeared in the 1976 book by Richard Dawkins, The Selfish Gene. Though Dawkins defined the meme as "a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation," memeticists vary in their definitions of meme. The lack of a consistent, rigorous and precise definition of a meme remains one of the principal criticisms leveled at memetics, the study of memes. This sounds very like astrology, so I feel right at home. Anyway, Jill tagged me for this and it seems a good way to lift me temporarily out of my Pluto obsession (Mercury in my chart is in Scorpio) so here goes: 1. Things that scare me: The fact that I will probably never understand the mysteries of life. Heights and highway driving. 2. People who make me laugh: Stephanie Miller Jon Stewart Amy Sedaris 3. Things I hate the most: cruelty arrogance 4. Things I don't understand: Monty Python blind religious belief horror movies 5. Things I'm doing right now: wondering about Pluto's next act putting off cleaning out my closet petting my dog 6. Things I want to do before I die: understand the mysteries of life fully appreciate my life learn to relax 7. Things I can do: read a birthchart program the VCR raise a great dog 8. Things I can't do: go to a scary movie watch Ann Coulter travel alone 9. Ways to describe my personality: (this was missing on Jill's but I found it elsewhere): calm demeanor belying an inner wildness friendly and kind but solitary 10. Things I think you should listen to: Your inner voice of guidance, no matter what. 11. Things you should never listen to: Your inner voice of self-doubt. A sentence that begins with the words "you should" 12. Things I'd like to learn: cascading style sheets the hammer dulcimer 13. Favorite foods: Mexican and Indian dark chocolate, of course 14. Beverages I drink regularly: I can't start the day without my decaf. An occasional therapeutic beer. 15. Shows I watched as a kid: [this will date me for sure] Captain Kangaroo real cartoons (Merrie Melodies) Lassie Tag, you're it! Jeffrey Elsa Barbara Jude JM My first thought when astronomers began the discussion of declassifying Pluto was "they don't know who they're dealing with." Anyone who has been through a transit of Pluto across their natal planets and seen the devastation and transformation that Pluto inspires understands the awe in which astrologers hold this tiny planet. Nancy Waterman subscribes to the view that Pluto has been dissed: Various countries and cultures have frequently been given the rulership of one or another astrological sign when a nation demonstrates the sign’s particular characteristics. In many ways, the Arab culture has collectively demonstrated many of the attibutes of Scorpio: in its intensity and depth of emotion, its desire for revenge when affronted, and its wealth based on the hidden resource of oil which itself is derived from the death of previous life on earth. Moreover, terrorism, largely derived from extremists within the Islamic culture, may be seen as a manifestion of the most dangerous Scorpionic/Plutonian qualities: obsession, fanaticism, death and violence used to manipulate and transform, and psychological warfare of the most devious and vicious kind. And finally, nuclear power, in its capactiy to unleash the hidden power in the atom and create untold devastation, is also clearly a member of Pluto’s domain.Jeffrey Kishner agrees: "I also hope that lay people don't think less of Pluto just because He has been demoted. He is, after all, representative of the most powerful, treansformational energy in the universe. If I were an astronomer, I certainly wouldn't want to f*ck with Him!" Rick Levine of Star IQ suggests "We have banished Pluto to where he naturally belongs: the netherworlds of unplanets. We had our chance to integrate him, but we chickened out. And of course, by suppressing his natural planetary expression, we have inadvertently given him additional power. That which we resist will persist even stronger." I can't help but feel, though, that while astronomers may feel that they have demoted Pluto to "dwarf planet" status the fact that Ceres and Xena have been upgraded as partners to Pluto signifies a new way of integrating Pluto's lessons of evolutionary personal growth rather than a limitation of Pluto. With the conjunction of Pluto to the Galactic Center there seems to be a new awareness springing up everywhere that we are on a collision course with planetary destruction that will require an enormous personal and political step forward in our evolutionary journey. Thursday, August 24, 2006Perhaps Earth not a planet as well?![]() Eric Francis has a hilarious takeoff on the recent news articles demoting Pluto: Today's session of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) general assembly had yet another surprise outcome, as astronomers voted overwhelmingly that the Earth is not a planet. All kidding aside, this is a truly momentous event in so many ways. Astrology teaches that all of life is synchronistically connected, and I have no doubt that hidden in this event is an illuminating discovery for astrologers as well. I'll keep posting more as I continue to ponder... Astronomers from 75 countries today voted to remove Pluto's status as a planet. Pluto will now join Ceres and "Xena" under the classification "dwarf planets." Pluto's change of status won't affect the way it operates astrologically; however, the new classification is very interesting and perhaps in this way gives Pluto an independence of operation that it didn't have before now that it has its own classification along with Ceres and "Xena." The fact that both Pluto and Ceres are tied to the story of the underworld will I'm sure be relevant to this new dynamic, and the naming of Xena will add another dimension. I'll write more later as it sinks in. Wednesday, August 23, 2006Jupiter/Saturn brings bad health news![]() The Washington Post reports: Bad news for all those baby boomers starting to pile on the pounds as they go through middle age: You don't have to be obese -- just a little overweight -- to increase your risk of dying prematurely, according to a large government study.Jupiter rules expansion and often indicates self-indulgence. Those of us with Jupiter strong in their charts have a tendency to gain weight and enjoy the pleasures of life, perhaps to excess. Saturn's restrictions and disappointments are diametrically opposed to the optimism and buoyancy of Jupiter, and as we approach the final phase of the square between Jupiter and Saturn that began back in December of last year we are being forced to curtail (Saturn) our activities that felt so good at the time (Jupiter). Although this is disappointing news, I know that Saturn will reward the hard work that I do, so I'm off to the gym! Tuesday, August 22, 2006Happy Birthday Virgo!![]() Virgo is one of the least respected signs of the zodiac. Virgo gets blamed for being perfectionistic, critical and cautious yet rarely receives accolades for its exceptional attributes: service to others, , attention to health and self-improvement, and practical application of the mind. The symbol for Virgo is the Virgin, but not the celibate definition of virgin that we use today. Rather, the virgin in ancient times was an unmarried woman, and individuals with Virgo prominent in their chart tend to be self-directed and concerned primarily with the development of their spirit and perfection of the body. Virgo, being an earth sign, is grounded in earthly matters. Like the sixth house with which it is associated, Virgo deals with the rituals of everyday physical reality. In its effort to keep life organized into manageable segments, Virgo can be cautious and easily worried if things seem to be going out of control and this can cause emotional difficulties that sometimes result in physical ailments. Virgo is naturally attuned to the delicate balance of the body/mind connection and often is very careful about the foods used to fuel the physical engine. There is often an affinity for creative work of a practical nature (such as pottery or sculpture) as they are good with their hands, as well as skills repairing virtually anything (taking things apart and seeing how they work is a classic Virgo trait). Virgo can be frugal to the point of stingy, part of the caution with which they approach most aspects of their life. They need to be prepared for every eventuality which often requires hoarding of financial assets as well as the odd bits of string and other remnants of their past. But where Virgo may be less than generous with their money they are magnanimous with their time, ready to jump in and help with whatever is needed with no desire for fame or recognition. In fact, Virgo's legendary shyness keeps him from claiming the respect that may be due him. This shyness and deep inner need to become a completely integrated being within himself can sometimes lead to loneliness; although Virgo can live alone quite comfortably they too need the stimulation of human companionship. Virgo has been associated with the alchemical process of turning lead into gold. By classifying and categorizing the world around him and integrating the whole within himself he is able to further perfect the imperfect Self in which he finds himself. Virgo can always see where things can be improved, and this can sometimes seem more like negativity than a positive process. Sometimes Virgo will become stuck in the process of discrimination and classification, improving and perfecting, and will lose a sense of the whole picture. In relationships, Virgos are loyal and excellent listeners - they are wonderful friends who are always reliable and there when you need them. In romance they can be a bit cautious and fearful, but the openness required to build a lasting relationship will be a great boon to them in the end, encouraging them to have trust in the adventure of life. ![]() As you probably know, 3,000 astronomers are meeting this week in Prague to decide the fate of Pluto and the very solar system as we know it. The New York Times reports: In e-mail messages from Prague, Owen Gingerich, chairman of the union’s Planet Definition Committee, said, “It was only accidental that Pluto remained a planet” in their proposal. Nor had they tried to calculate how many new planets would result. So it's still up in the air whether the astronomical importance of these bodies will change, and if they do, how that change will be made and what the astrological significance will be. Astronomers are sharply divided on whether or not Pluto should remain a planet, and many feel that the retention of Pluto in the planetary definition would open the door to hundreds and possibly thousands of other planets and other objects. The International Astronomers Union is set to vote on Thursday just after the New Moon in Virgo which is exceedingly appropriate since Virgo loves classification and pigeonholing objects into their appropriate category. Meanwhile, manyVedic astrologers are unfazed by this turn of events since they typically don't work with any of the planets beyond Saturn anyway. Monday, August 21, 2006Planetary news this weekI'm going to take a break from the series on the new Plutons until the International Astronomers Union votes on whether the new proposal will take place since there is still quite a bit of debate. Meanwhile, we are in the shadow of the New Moon which occurs August 23 at 3:10 pm in Virgo. But first, we see the introduction of Mercury (communication) to the upcoming opposition of Saturn (building forms) and Neptune (dissolving forms) which will be exact on August 31. Mercury conjuncts Saturn this week, where it wants to crystallize (Saturn) ideas and concepts despite the pull of Neptune into the realm of imagination and ideas. This can be a powerful time for creative (Neptune) writing (Saturn), or writing on topics of a spiritual or transformative (Neptune) nature. Writing connects the communication urge of Mercury with the discipline and structure of Saturn and is a key to navigating this period. Venus squares Jupiter on August 22 (a challenging aspect between the planet of relating and the planet of expansion and opportunity) which may give us a tendency towards self-indulgence, although Venus is simultaneously approaching a conjunction to Saturn which will encourage responsibility and duty. However, the conflict here between Jupiter's expansiveness and Saturn's restrictions could create problems in our personal relationships for a few days. The New Moon occurs in the first degree of Virgo on August 23, signifying the moment of the Sun's entry into Virgo. Virgo is a practical and cautious sign, concerned with matters of health, service, and organization. New moons are times of beginning, when the solar conscious principle works in concert with the lunar instincts, and this New Moon marks the transition point from the solar focus in Leo which is all about the glory of the Self to humble Virgo which is more concerned with duty and tends to disregard and dislike the large expressions of ego that Leo tends toward. We have a shift in tone here that could tend to subdue some of the violence that we've seen over the past couple of months. This New Moon will be the perfect time for beginning a new health and exercise regime (Virgo is concerned with the mind/body connection and matters of the physical body). If you've been wanting to begin volunteering at the local hospital or animal shelter or serving your community in some other way, the energy is there to support that now. Virgo is also concerned with the small rituals that make up the mundane reality of human existence as well as other rituals that connect the mind, body and spirit, making this an excellent time to begin new patterns of behavior. The trine of Jupiter to Uranus is approaching the end of its cycle (the exact trine is August 29), and will add confidence help to facilitate resolutions to any problems that arise as a result of the minor but difficult planetary interactions at the end of the month; however, the approaching opposition between Saturn and Neptune is exact on August 31, so there may be considerable confusion as well as a sense of victimization if you have a tendency to play the victim role. If you find yourself losing your balance, step back and strike a balance in your life between quiet reflection and meditation (Neptune) and fulfilling your role in society (Saturn). The key now is to balance these two processes in order to find the truth that lies between them. The trine of Mercury to Pluto on August 24 will help to expose the deeper (Pluto) meanings (Mercury) and resolve any disputes that have arisen as the result of the Mars/Uranus conflicts described above. Pluto wants to get to the root of the problem and effect a real solution, making this an excellent time for conflict resolution. The conjunction of Venus to Saturn on August 26 and opposition to Neptune on August 27 introduces Venus to the Saturn/Neptune dance. Venus in conflict with Neptune tends to overromanticize a situation and can make it difficult to see things as they really are, and the conjunction from Saturn may create a challenge that forces us to a clearer vision of our reality. This is a time of recovery and preparation - September will add some challenging eclipses and other dynamic planetary events that will encourage change and evolution but for now we get a break. Enjoy it, use this New Moon to let go of old patterns that no longer serve you and begin anew. Friday, August 18, 2006Introducing the Plutons!! Part I, Ceres![]() As I wrote earlier this week and most people already know, the International Astronomical Union is meeting this week to discuss reclassifying our solar system, and adding three new planets under the category of "Plutons" to accompany our old friend Pluto. The three new planets are Ceres, Charon, and 2003 UB313 (temporarily nicknamed "Xena"). Because the astrological Pluto deals with the transformation that comes from looking death in the eye and annhilation of the personal ego, it stands to reason that the reclassification of the "Plutons" could open a door to how this process operates. The last "planet" to be discovered in our lifetime was the comet/planetoid Chiron, and it took some time for its astrological signficance to become known. Through the magic of synchronicity, the name of the planet itself reveals the god whose energy manifests through that planet. Ceres was the first asteroid discovered in 1801, and it briefly enjoyed planetary status before being classified as an asteroid (meaning "star-like"). (The fact that there already exists an asteroid called Demeter complicates the interpretation of the story somewhat since Ceres and Demeter are often used interchangeably). Ceres is the Roman name for the Greek goddess Demeter, ruling agriculture, sustenance and motherhood. Ceres is best known for the disappearance of her daughter Proserpine/Persephone into the underworld of Hades/Pluto, during which she created a perpetual winter until her daughter was returned. Astrologers are already arguing over what sign Ceres will rule. Until Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were discovered, the twelve signs each had a planetary ruler but a few of the signs had to share that ruler with another sign. For example, Mars is the ruler of Aries, but it also was the ruler of Scorpio (Pluto is considered the modern ruler of Scorpio). The addition of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto each gave us an added dimension to the human experience: Uranus added the dimension of individual freedom and liberty that drove the revolutionary period of the late 1700s after its discovery. Neptune brought with it a spiritual experience that went beyond religion and a heightened degree of creativity in art, introducing spiritualism, seances, and "modern" art including impressionism, as well as the Romantic period (Neptune rules romance as well) in music. Pluto, god of death and transformation that occurs by entering the underworld and returning in a different form, introduced the atomic bomb which threatened the very survival of mankind and the field of psychology which transforms from within. When Chiron was discovered, many astrologers believed that Chiron should be associated with Sagittarius since Chiron was a centaur and the symbol for Sag is the centaur; however, in working with Chiron in the charts and considering his archetype as the healer with the wound that will not heal it was clear that Chiron was more closely related to Virgo. Like Virgo, Chiron sought perfection in life through learning (Virgo's association with the planet Mercury) and serving others. Sometimes astrological associations disdain the obvious. So with Ceres, some astrologers want to place Ceres as Virgo's ruler. Ceres has long been associated with Virgo, perhaps because Ceres was an unmarried woman (virgin in those days meant merely unmarried, not celibate). However, it appears to me that Ceres is more properly associated with Cancer. The myth of Ceres shows a fiercely protective mother, willing to sacrifice the good of her people for the sake of her daughter. This is a trait that we would not find with Virgo, who is oriented towards the service of others. It IS, however, a trait we would find in Cancer, the sign of the nurturing maternal instinct. In addition, Ceres was the goddess of agriculture, fecundity and nourishment, and Cancer is the cardinal sign for the summer season, the beginning of the growing season. As the modern ruler of Cancer, Ceres would add a dimension to the protective and action-oriented sign of Cancer that it's present ruler the Moon does not relate to. Some astrologers have worked with Ceres for years as an asteroid. Demetra George has a fascinating book called Asteroid Goddesses that you may be interested in - her groundbreaking work on the major asteroids (Ceres, Pallas Athena, Vesta and Juno) added a much-needed feminine dimension to astrology. (Incidentally, Ms. George also considered Ceres as ruling Cancer). In this framework, however, Ceres was only a part of the feminine whole, whereas if she is elected to planetary status Ceres will gain a more powerful stature. Several people over the past few days have mentioned that perhaps the upgrade of Ceres to planet status is the harbinger of an increased respect for the agricultural process that feeds us. There has been a great deal of news lately regarding the poisons and imbalance in our ecological system (such as genetically modified foods) and a corresponding surge of interest in organic farming, as well as disturbing trends towards labeling foods as organic that don't meet the highest organic standards. Perhaps Ceres will bring new types of biofuels that can satisfy the energy needs of the next century. I'll continue to bring updated information as I can find it. Ceres has already been used extensively in its previous classification as an asteroid by some astrologers. The fascinating thing about the new planets is the synchronicity of the timing of their upgrade. And this, of course, only time will unfold. Thursday, August 17, 2006The death of Jonbenet Ramsey![]() The news that a suspect has been arrested in the murder of the young beauty queen ten years ago brought relief to some and more questions to others. The statements by John Mark Karr that he drugged and had sex with Jonbenet but killed her "by accident" doesn't seem to square with the details of her death. No semen was found at the scene, and there was no sign of drugs, and this news has reopened the mystery of who killed Jonbenet Ramsey. No one escaped suspicion in the murder - not the father, the mother, the brother or the family friends. Jonbenet's chart (birth data from Astrodatabank) has a creepy quality to me - there's a Grand Cross in fixed planets that includes Mars in Taurus (motivated to maintain security and harmony) in the twelfth house (a karmic placement that often involves sacrifice (12th house) of the will (Mars) of the individual, often to the family dynamic. Mars exactly opposes (180 degrees) Pluto in Scorpio in the sixth house. Taurus and Scorpio both have a strong sexual component; Taurus is sensual and requires sensory stimulation and Pluto deals with the darker and more obsessive aspects of sexuality. Mars and Pluto similarly deal with sex - Mars with the pure sex drive and Pluto with, again, the more compulsive need to transform through sexuality. The Mars/Pluto opposition in Taurus/Scorpio is strongly sexual and often indicates either a tendency to attract violence (particularly in the twelfth house where it remains hidden). This opposition squares another opposition: the opposition between the Sun and the Moon. The Sun often represents the father in a birthchart and the Moon the mother, and here it appears that the father was the more nurturing parent and the mother was more dominant. Jonbenet's Moon conjuncts the Midheaven, or cusp of the tenth house of career and public life, showing Patsy Ramsey (Moon) was instrumental in Jonbenet's young stage life (having herself been a beauty queen). The Sun, or the father, is conjunct the cusp of the fourth house of the home and Jonbenet may have been close to her father, but the square of both Mars and Pluto to both the father and mother archetypes (Sun and Moon) shows that there was very little safety in the relationship with either parent. Pluto in particular, when in challenging aspect to the Sun (the essential Spirit) and the Moon (emotional security and safety), can be deeply frightening and there is a sense that the parents, and life itself, are dangerous. Jonbenet had Venus in Cancer, demonstrating her desire to nurture and care for those she loved and in order to keep peace (Mars in Taurus) she would have put aside her own will (Mars opposite Pluto) and done what she could to make those she loved as happy as possible (Venus in Cancer). Venus in her chart was exactly conjunct Chiron (wounding and healing) which could indicate the damage done to her (Chiron) by her beauty (Venus), but also shows that she is wounded, perhaps by her mother (with Chiron in Cancer) BECAUSE of her beauty. Venus is also nearly exactly opposed by Saturn, indicating a deep insecurity (Saturn) about her intrinsic value (Venus) as a female and as an individual. Saturn is retrograde in her chart, a signature of deep self-criticism as the negative voice of Saturn turns inward. Patsy Ramsey's chart shows Pluto (the planet that rules death and rebirth) exactly square to Jonbenet''s ascendant/descendant axis, which is significant not only in terms of its affect on Jonbenet's identity, which is tied to the ascendant, but also because the ascendant often shows the birth process itself. When one person's Pluto strongly affects the chart of another like this, there is a sense of danger and fear of that person, and typically an intensely combative relationship. Patsy's Chiron (wounding and healing) is exactly conjunct Jonbenet's Moon (emotions and the mother), identifying an excruciatingly painful relationship between them. Chiron in Patsy's chart also squares Neptune (illusion and fantasy) and therefore her Neptune squares Jonbenet's Moon; a morass of blurred identities and failed dreams. We so often find Jupiter in death charts, and at the time of Jonbenet's murder Jupiter was transiting this difficult Venus/Saturn/Chiron system, releasing her from what was likely a lifetime of deeply painful experiences. This is the kind of chart that is very difficult to navigate until the individual passes the Saturn Return and enters into midlife, which Jonbenet did not have an opportunity to do. We will probably never know who really killed Jonbenet Ramsey, but the mystery that surrounds her life as well as her death will keep the fascination alive for years to come. If you're anywhere near the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area of North Carolina this weekend join me at the Body Mind Spirit Expo at the NC Fairgrounds in Raleigh. I'll be doing 20-minute mini readings so it's a good time to get a quick checkup, and my husband Rich will be selling beautiful crystals and minerals. If you want to reserve a time slot for a reading send me an email before the show. Otherwise, just stop by! Wednesday, August 16, 2006Conspiracy and terrorism![]() I was never much of a conspiracy buff until a few years ago, although I did always think that JFK was assassinated by J Edgar Hoover. But after September 11 and my sister's inspiration, I became a voracious reader on all things conspiratorial. So when I read that in the UK and in Europe biometric screenings (iris screening, shades of Big Brother) are being proposed as a security measure I became suspicious. I don't want to die in a terrorist bombing any more than the next person, but nor do I want my freedom to be hijacked in exchange for my fear. News reports over the next few days are calling into question the veracity of the terror plot in the UK, including one from former British Ambassador Craig Murray who said that the fact that the suspects had no bomb equipment and no passports made the whole "plot" seem trumped up. The Guardian interviewed Brits on the street and found them skeptical about the whole thing. So I was very interested in Barbara Palliser's astrological take on this, particularly since she lives in the UK. She reports (I've snipped a bit) Up till last Thursday I had an open mind about conspiracy theories. Now after having a good look round the internet, at the reactions to the events of the last few days here in the UK, it seems that fear is fear no matter how it’s repackaged and labeled as ‘what’s really going on’. AND we get to keep Pluto if a proposal by a committee of the International Astronomical Union is passed. I'll write more on this as I have time, but the new bodies classified as planets are Charon (formerly known as Pluto's largest moon but now considered a trin planet), Ceres (formerly termed an asteroid), and 2003 UB 313 (temporarily nicknamed Xena - a name which I hope will become permanent!!). The significance of Charon now being considered a twin planet of Pluto may tell us how Charon operates astrologically. Charon was the ferryman who brought the newly dead across the river to the god Pluto. Charon may therefore have significance as to the process of transformation and resurrection. Stay tuned as more information unfolds! I'll be cruising the astrology boards to gather more details. ![]() This is not a doom and gloom column, but it's useful to be prepared when difficult times are ahead, and we have a few configurations coming that will put pressure on the financial markets and create some economic instability. Jupiter and Saturn will make the final square of their year-long dance, forcing a confrontation between our desire for expansion and growth (Jupiter) and the hard cold facts of reality (Saturn). This occurs is nearly simultaneous to the first phase of the opposition between Saturn and Neptune (glamor and illusion) which will force us to face any delusions that we have been harboring. This column is full of references to the significance of Pluto's travels through Sagittarius (1995-2008) which are nearly complete, but one highlight of this cycle which is relevant to this discussion is the obsessive (Pluto) optimism (Sagittarius) which has been so pronounced during this period. The rise and fall of financial markets is based on the confidence (Sag) of consumers, and the entry of Pluto into Sagittarius in February of 1995 witnessed the Dow Industrial's first ever close above 4,000 points. As we know, the stock market continued to rise driven by the dot com industries. (Uranus, which rules technology, had just entered the sign of Aquarius which is ruled by Uranus and therefore shares its attributes and technology became the rule of the day.) [Side note: the entry of Pluto into Sag also coincided with the Oklahoma City bombing which was the first of the major terrorist attacks in the US.] The stock market bubble did pop in 2000 when Jupiter and Saturn were conjunct in Taurus (material security). The Pluto in Sagittarius cycle also has seen a worldwide rise in housing prices as well as personal debt, as the "irrationally exuberant" optimism of the period drove homeowners to pull equity out of their rapidly appreciating homes to finance their newly extravagant lifestyles. Speculation drove vacation home prices to stratosphereic levels based on the confidence that prices would continue to increase. Jupiter/Saturn cycles correct the tendency to expand too quickly, and we are already seeing a pullback in housing prices as well as stock market prices. Saturn's confrontation of Neptune's love for illusion beginning this month will add another challenge. The financial news yesterday was mixed and that is likely to continue due to the tension between Jupiter's confidence and expansion, Neptune's love of fantasy, and Saturn's disappointments and restrictions:
Tuesday, August 15, 2006Another hollywood breakup and the fallacy of soulmatesIt seems to be true that whenever a couple talks incessantly about how much in love they are they break up soon afterwards, and this was true for Kate Hudson and Chris Robinson. National Ledger has my profile of the breakup (turn on your popup blockers!) and I won't repeat it here. But some of the emails I received in response to the post started me thinking again about the concept of the soulmate. Most single people are looking for their soulmate, and some who are married too I suppose. Many people think the soulmate will be their perfect match in every way, perhaps a mirror to reflect their own value. In real life, the soulmate relationship usually doesn't work that way. Often when two people meet and feel an immediate connection there is a linkage between their two charts, sometimes a harmonious connection (trines and sextiles) and sometimes a challenging one (squares and oppositions). Often it is the challenging connections that feel more exciting and dynamic, but then once the excitement of the new relationship dies down the intensity of the connection has a tendency to fade, leaving the conflicting nature of the connection to be dealt with. That's usually when we see breakups, but that is often the point where real soul growth can begin to take place. Marriage has been called the "yoga of relationships," because like yoga it connects the body, mind and spirit in connection with another. It's not always the easiest of paths, particularly in the goldfish bowl of celebrity, but one of the most rewarding. Monday, August 14, 2006Pluto - no longer a planet?![]() For several years now, scientists have been threatening to remove Pluto's "planet" status because it has turned out to be much smaller than originally thought when it was discovered in 1930. Scientists now believe that Pluto may be a member of the Kuiper belt band of rocky objects that orbit the Sun just past Neptune. The International Astronomers Union meets today in the Prague to decide whether Pluto can keep its title. If Pluto is declassified as a planet, will it lose its astrological symbolism as well? Anyone who has ever monitored the timing of a transit of Pluto will recognize its power to effect great change in our lives. Pluto, regardless of its physical size, exerts an incredibly strong astrological influence. Because it moves so slowly, taking twelve years to pass through one astrological sign, its influence can encompass a long period of time which is another aspect to its power. Pluto's influence is transpersonal - it forces us through the upheavals in our life that it creates to surrender the reins of our individual life and recognize that there is a larger process at work here. If Pluto is relegated to the realm of a Kuiper belt object, that may have a lot to say about the workings of other Kuiper belt objects as well. Some astronomers propose reclassifying the planets into three divisions which does make some sense astrologically:
One scientist said, "I don't know about the public, but whatever happens, the astrologers will be upset about it." That is no doubt true, but we would be better served by honoring the synchronicity of the unfolding body of scientific knowledge to see how we can expand our understanding of the planetary mysteries. Saturday, August 12, 2006Pluto in Sagittarius and the Fear of Travel![]() Pluto is the lord of death and the underworld and all things dark and mysterious as well as deep and intense. Pluto on its darkest days brings obsession and pulls us into darkness in order to bring us face to face with the deepest reality of life and death and face to face with our fears. It breaks down our existing reality and rebuilds a new one in the ashes of the old. Ultimately, Pluto releases us from bondage and empowers us in the truest sense. In the film Batman Begins, Bruce Wayne falls down a hole into a cave (down into the Underworld of Pluto's domain) where he is surrounded by a swarm of bats. The memory of this horrifying event haunts him throughout his youth, until finally he willingly enters the underworld again, going back into the cave to face his fears and overcome them. Having done so, he returns transformed and empowered as Batman - taking the shape of his own worst fears. His fear and obsession have given him the gifts of power and enabled him to follow his life's true path. Pluto is finishing up its twelve-year journey through Sagittarius in the next couple of years, where it has brought fear, destruction and rebuilding of all things Sagittarian: philosophy, religion, law, travel, cultural expansion. Since Pluto entered Sagittarius in 1995, we have seen the expansion of globalism at an unprecedented scale: the popularization of World Music, the establishment of the euro as European currency, the spread of Islamic fundamentalism and terrorist organizations. The expansion of large corporations across the world has destroyed a great deal of the American employment structure and rebuilt it in other countries. Pluto in Sagittarius has brought fear (Pluto) of globalism (Sag), fear (Pluto) of other cultures (Sag) and fear (Pluto) of travel. The very cross-cultural expansion of ideas is terrifying to traditionalists. The attack by planes (Sagittarius rules long distance travel) on September 11 was a stunning archetype for Pluto in Sagittarius, and this week's scare that terrorists are planning to blow up planes in flight has renewed the fear of flying. Tim Boucher's post in his excellent blog on all things esoteric reads it this way: [A]ttacking airlines (or threatening to do so) is a purely symbolic act. Attacking one airplane is bad and tragic, but it’s not - militarily speaking - as awful as it would be if they managed to take out an entire airport, power plant, factory, bridge, major highway, railroad hub, port area, etc. You know: real military targets, in other words. Things that are of clear strategic importance because they cripple infrastructure and inhibit your opponent’s ability to fight back. Putting a bomb on an airplane does not do this. It does one thing and one thing only. Friday, August 11, 2006Terrorism, Fear, Mars/Uranus and Batman Art by Willow ArleneaThese new terrorism arrests and the exposure of a plot to blow up perhaps a dozen planes heading to the US coincided exactly with the lingering effects of the Full Moon. Evidently the investigations that led to the arrests had been going on for quite some time in a cooperative enterprise between the British and Pakistani police. 24 suspects were arrested in Britain, with additional British nationals of Pakistani origin arrested in Pakistan. The opposition between Mars (the aggressive instinct of individuals) with Uranus (radical change and sudden shifts) is coming to a head as it approaches the exact degree on August 13 and we are certain to see an increase in things like road rage and reckless behavior as well as the more global effects of heightened warfare and breakdowns in negotiations. ![]() I just saw the film Batman Begins for the first time, and one of the main themes of that film is facing your fears. In this movie Bruce Wayne uses his experience as a child where he was terrified by bats as a persona for his vehicle of his life's work to battle with the forces of evil. Eckhart Tolle has an amazing ability to communicate the simplest truths about the complex subject of consciousness. He writes about fear: The psychological condition of fear is divorced from any concrete and true immediate danger. It comes in many forms: unease, worry, anxiety, nervousness, tension, dread, phobia, and so on. This kind of psychological fear is always of something that might happen, not of something that is happening now. You are in the here and now, while your mind is in the future. This creates an anxiety gap. And if you are identified with your mind and have lost touch with the power and simplicity of the Now, that anxiety gap will be your constant companion. You can always cope with the present moment, but you cannot cope with something that is only a mind projection - you cannot cope with the future.Although the challenging astrological cycles of 2006 will ease towards the end of the year, we are heading towards a difficult period beginning in 2008 when Pluto enters Capricorn and approaches the square with Uranus and our world as we know it begins to shift into new forms. We cannot let ourselves become mired in fear of known and unknown dangers, but instead we can remain aware of and relish the small beauties that are inherent in each moment of our life: the touch of a loved one, the sight of a butterfly, the taste of a perfect berry. In this way we can experience the best of our life which will expand our awareness and deepen our understanding. Wednesday, August 09, 2006Saturn/Neptune: A History LessonIt's always fascinating to look back into the historical record to see how planetary configurations applied themselves during those times in order to learn more about how those planets work together and to derive clues of how they may manifest this time around. Saturn/Neptune is a 36- year cycle which gives us plenty of interesting information. Remember that Saturn strives to build form where Neptune reminds us that there is a world beyond form; Saturn rules incarnation in the body and Neptune draws us into experiences that go beyond the body and the material world. In the opposition, where the two planets are 180 degrees apart, there is a tension between them that requires balance. This is a challenging aspect, but not so difficult as the square in which there is open conflict. The opposition is the apex of the cycle; it is the pinnacle of understanding the process before integration takes place. In the opposition between Saturn and Neptune our fantasies and illusions (Neptune) bump up against cold hard reality (Saturn), but there is also potential for manifesting our dreams (Neptune) into physical form (Saturn) and incorporating a life of spirit (Neptune) into our day-to-day existence (Saturn). Politically, the cycle of these two planets tends to bring conflict that arises as a result of the desire to manifest an ideal (Neptune) against the established order of Saturn. This cycle can also manifest in the exposure of governmental (Saturn) corruptive and deceptive behavior (Neptune). In this century, Saturn in Pisces opposed Neptune in Virgo in March and October of 1936 and then again in January of 1937. This was a heavily Neptunian period since Pisces is ruled by Neptune, and Saturn in Pisces has difficulty grounding into material reality and confusion abounds. Saturn/Neptune is also associated with the destabilization (Neptune) of governmental structures: This period bore witness to the rise of nationalism with the expansion of the Nazis in Germany, a civil war in Spain between nationalist troops of General Franco and Spain's democrative government. This era also marked the beginning of Arab nationalism and riots in Palestine in reaction to Jewish immigration and the British government, as well as the abdication of Edward VIII in England who left the throne (Saturn) to marry the woman he loved, a very Neptunian romantic notion. One of the more interesting events of the previous Saturn/Neptune opposition of 1899-1900 (with Saturn in Sagittarius and Neptune in Gemini) was the Boxer Rebellion against foreign influence in China which took place during the final years of the Qing Dynasty. The Boxer Rebellion sprange out of nationalist fervor against foreigners and Chinese Christians. The rebellion was ironically put down by a multinational force and the resulting humiliation led to the downfall of the Qing Dynasty by 1905. The Boxer Rebellion brought previously hidden (Neptune) ideology and frustration to a culmination point. The opposition of Saturn in Gemini to Neptune in Sagittarius occurred in June and November of 1971 and April of 1972 and was marked by increasingly violent demonstrations and rebellions around the world as idealism (Neptune in Sag) came face to face with governmental repression (Saturn). In the US, demonstrations against the Vietnam War grew in numbers and in power and the Supreme Court permits publication of the Pentagon Papers, exposing corruption in the government (Saturn/Neptune). The Attica prison riots exposed the poor conditions in US prisons (prisons are ruled by Neptune). The end of 1971 also witnessed civil war in Cambodia and between India and Pakistan, as well as increased fighting between British troops and Irish nationalists which culminated in the famous Bloody Sunday massacre in early 1972. All of these events showed the culmination of understanding that is the highlight of the opposition and paved the way for change that occurred during the waning phase of the cycle. The end of the opposition in 1972 also saw a treaty that banned (Saturn) biological weapons (Neptune) was signed by 70 nations. The Saturn/Neptune cycle has been associated by some astrologers with the flu of 1918, but the conjunction of Saturn and Neptune in Leo actually completed months before that epidemic and the planetary cycle in place during the deadly flu epidemic was an opposition between Saturn and Uranus as well as a conjunction between Jupiter and Pluto. However, with any Saturn/Neptune contact there is the potential for hidden dangers that may not make themselves known right away. So what can we expect during this year's Saturn/Neptune opposition which begins this month and will continue through June of next year? A few possibilities:
Tuesday, August 08, 2006Astrological signs in the Senate![]() Thanks to Astrococktail for this fascinating link to the Washington Post vote database. where you can track who voted for what by party, state, region, "boomer status," gender and astrological sign. It also gives a list of how many congresspeople are represented in each sign and who they are. I usually don't highlight this kind of Sun Sign representation, but it's interesting to see that three signs dominate the Senate and three are significantly underrepresented. For example, out of 100 senators, the least represented sign is Leo. Clearly we cannot derive a great deal of information from the Sun Signs alone, but that is an interesting statistic to me since Leo is the sign of SELF-expression. The most represented signs are Aquarius (which you might expect since Aquarius, as the opposite of Leo, is the sign of the expression of the collective), Scorpio (which typically deals with issues of power so you might expect to find them in government), and Taurus, whose realms of concern include physical security. As you might expect, the Taureans are primarily Republicans (earth signs tend to be more conservative since they dislike change, although other factors in the chart can radicalize them) including the well-known Rick Santorum. The Scorpios included some of the most well-known and outspoken names: Hillary Clinton, Robert Byrd, Ted Stevens, Tom Harkin, and Joe Biden. After Leo, the next sign that had the least representation is Gemini, with only four senators (possibly because of Gemini's famous need for constant change and stimulation and those meetings are long). Not surprisingly, the Geminis are split evenly between Democrats and Republicans. Aries is the next least represented sign, with only five members. With the independent streak found in most Aries this again is not surprising, Aries often doesn't work well in concert with others and prefers to lead their own pack. There's endless hours of possibilities here as you can track this for every vote! Sounds like a research project for those slow days in January. Sunday, August 06, 2006Full Moon coming into view![]() The Full Moon is still a few days away, but its energy is beginning to make itself known. This Full Moon is in Aquarius, opposing the Sun in Leo. Over the past week we have seen Mars beginning a harmonious dance with Jupiter which reaches the exact degree on August 8. During this first week there will be an expansion (Jupiter) of energy (Mars) available that will help to shake out the cobwebs of the inward push we have been experiencing with five retrograde planets during July. This provides an excellent lead-up to the Full Moon in Aquarius on August 9 (at 6:54 am EST). This is a powerful Full Moon, nearly exactly conjunct the Saturn/Neptune opposition. The Full Moon occurs when the instinctive and unconscious principle of the Moon is illuminated by the conscious principle of the Sun. We have greater access to our creativity during this period, as well as our own inner sense of power which is released by the solarization of the unconscious. During this Full Moon the Sun conjuncts Saturn in Leo, bringing a stabilizing force desiring a practical application. The Moon is conjunct Neptune in Aquarius, expanding our creativity and inner awareness, as well as our ability to transcend the details of our reality and experience the source of all creation. There is potential here for a great transformation of consciousness if these two opposing polarities can be balanced and integrated during the shadow period of the Full Moon, three or four days before and after August 9. However, unless there is a conscious awareness and application of intention this could also be a confusing time where we feel we are standing on sands that shift and provide no stability. Venus and Mercury are dancing towards an exact conjunction in Cancer at the Full Moon, and the combination of the Venusian desire to connect and Mercury's quest for understanding makes this a good time for partnership activities and working together towards a common goal. However, Mars is approaching an opposition (stressful aspect) to Uranus, a potentially explosive influence that may break up any alliances that are formed. Fortunately, Jupiter is in positive aspect to both Mars and Uranus, which may help to expand (Jupiter) our ability to balance the aggressive instincts of Mars with the radical rebellious instinct of Uranus. This Full Moon will have the most impact on those of us with planets in the middle degrees of the fixed signs: Leo, Aquarius, Scorpio and Taurus. The nervous system is particularly vulnerable since Aquarius is involved, and grounding activities are highly recommended. As with all planetary cycles, understanding the nature of the dynamics will help us to harness the energies that are available to us and use them for the purpose of our own personal growth. Saturday, August 05, 2006Jupiter/Saturn: Possibilities + Boundaries = Wisdom![]() 2006 has been an intense year so far, with planetary dances creating a cycle that alternates between a building of tension through the hard aspects: squares (between Jupiter and Neptune and between Jupiter and Saturn) and oppositions (Saturn to Chiron); and an opening of the doors of consciousness and awareness through the flowing aspect of the trine (Uranus and Jupiter). The two planets that dominate these cycles are Jupiter (expansion and possibilities) and Saturn (contraction and boundaries). These two planets have been dancing in a square (challenging aspect) since December of 2005 and this cycle will conclude in late October of this year. Jupiter wants to expand our awareness, and Saturn wants to impose limitations. Jupiter believes all things are possible, and Saturn can be cold and judgmental, sowing the seeds of discontent. Saturn is often seen as the bad guy in this cycle, throwing a wet blanket over Jupiter’s exuberance and spoiling the fun. However, while Jupiter’s influence is no doubt a more enjoyable one, it is Saturn that teaches wisdom and practicality, providing the security that is needed to live on Planet Earth. Jupiter is said to rule the sign of Sagittarius, and because Pluto is traveling through the tail end of Sagittarius the issues of Jupiter are in the process of being transformed by Pluto. Jupiter is said to be the "greater benefic," and bestows good fortune and positive thinking. Jupiter is the principle that positive thoughts reap positive outcomes, and tends to be optimistic and expansive, ready to take advantage of all opportunities. Jupiter, of course, was King of the Gods, and as such he was the ruler of all and created his own laws. Jupiter is associated with law, theology, and our search for the meaning of life. Often this finds us in the realm of religion, which is the sharing of personal ideals with others. Jupiter represents blind faith - it also can show where we may find ourselves bigger than we actually are in life. It also rules expansion, and tends to bring an exaggerated manifestation of planets with which it comes into contact. The Jupiter/Saturn cycle teaches us the balance between faith (Jupiter) and secularism (Saturn), between optimism (Jupiter) and realism (Saturn). The current 20-year cycle began with the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in Taurus in the year 2000. We are currently in the waxing square phase of this cycle, in which new ideas and business frameworks are introduced, and then tested as the planets begin to form a 90 degree angle, or “square”, to each other. The Jupiter/Saturn square cycle deals with our ability to balance an openness of mind and optimistic viewpoint (Jupiter) with our ability to be practical and reasonable and be aware of our limitations (Saturn). Often the square aspect between these two planets creates expansive periods (Jupiter) that are followed shortly by a heavy dose of reality (Saturn). The 20-year Jupiter/Saturn cycle is associated with the adjustment of social and political structures, including economic and ideological elements. At the hard angle points (squares and oppositions), there is a correction of any imbalance that exists between the exuberance of Jupiter and the hard realism of Saturn. For example, the conjunction in 2000 coincided with the end of an “irrational exuberance” (Jupiter) that brought the stock market to a screeching halt as the dot-com boom busted (Saturn), causing a recession that lasted for several years. The Jupiter/Saturn cycle is associated with volatility in the stock market as well as social and political relationships, and since the Jupiter/Saturn conjunction in 2000, political forces have been extremely polarized not only in the On a more personal level, the square of Jupiter and Saturn this year has most intimately affected those of us with planets in the fixed signs of Scorpio, Taurus, Leo and Aquarius but all of us have been affected to some extent by the need to balance our need for expansion and fun (Jupiter) with our responsibilities and duties (Saturn). On a spiritual level, we may have found ourselves aligning with structured modalities of spiritual or healing practices (Jupiter) that we seek to impose on others (Saturn). Despite the challenges inherent in the “square” aspect between these two planets, they are both strongly present as teachers now and we can learn their lessons if we open our hearts and minds by asking ourselves where we may be out of balance. Are we being held captive by our responsibilities? (Saturn imbalance.) Are we holding on to unrealistic expectations? (Jupiter imbalance.) Do we impose our views on others? (Saturn) Are we spending more money than we earn? (Jupiter) The more we make a conscious effort to balance these powerful influences, the more we will flow through the conclusion of the cycle without having to learn its more painful lessons.
Friday, August 04, 2006Thoughts on Jupiter in Scorpio from Skywatch for AugustJupiter, the planet that drives us to search for the meaning of life, is still in Scorpio where it has been since late last year. Scorpio is ruled by Pluto, the god of death, and therefore relishes the journey through the underworld of darkness and emotional baggage. Scorpio seeks power and emotional intensity and Jupiter is the planet of buoyant abundance, so this is an odd combination that expands (Jupiter) the focus on death, secrecy and sexuality, the domains of Scorpio. Scorpio is rather ruthless in its aims, and Jupiter, being the King of the Gods, can be somewhat arrogant and self-righteous and an unfortunate aspect of this combination can be the ruthless slaughter of innocents. Jupiter was last in Scorpio in 1994, witnessing the beginning of the Rwandan massacre and the murders of Nicole Simpson (wife of OJ Simpson in case anyone needs a reminder) and Ron Goldman. That year also witnessed the destruction of part of the planet Jupiter by the Shoemaker-Levy comet that coincided with the conjunction of Jupiter in Scorpio to Pluto. Jupiter in Scorpio is not all death and destruction; it also opens our minds (Jupiter) to issues of sexuality (Scorpio), and opens up (Jupiter) trade and economic systems (Scorpio). For better or for worse, the processes that take place during Jupiter's travels through Scorpio create permanent transformation. For example, the 1994 NAFTA (free trade) agreement created a permanent flow of jobs from the US and transformed the American economic system. Although this process has created problems for US workers, it has expanded the economies of other countries and transformed the global balance of power (Jupiter/Pluto). The passage of Jupiter through Scorpio this year has been marked by the square of Jupiter to Saturn. Where Jupiter expands, Saturn creates limitations and restrictions. Saturn's purpose is to keep Jupiter from expanding too fast and in an ungrounded way. The final phase of the Jupiter/Saturn cycle ends in October (watch for a new article on this cycle which will be posted shortly on my website). Jupiter is known as the "greater benefic," but as in most things astrological that which we think of as "good" is often difficult, and that which we think of as "bad" can be exhilarating catalysts for change. Tun in more tomorrow for more on this complex planetary influence. Thursday, August 03, 2006Happy Lunasa!! Artwork by Maria Kay SimmsAlso spelled Lughnasad and later called Lammas, this holiday is traditionally celebrated on August 1st but as a cross-quarter day (halfway between the solstice and equinox) is more properly when the Sun is at 15 degrees Leo which is the midpoint between the Summer Solstice and the Autumnal Equinox, although it is also sometimes celebrated on the full moon nearest the midpoint. For modern pagans, the cross-quarter days are the most magical times of the year, when the veil between the worlds (the spiritual and physical planes) becomes thinner and more easily traveled. Lughnasadh is an ancient Celtic festival honoring the god Lugh for his triumph over the spirits of the other world who tried to keep the harvest for themselves. It was a celebration of the abundance of the Earth, and also a time of sports and games to celebrate good health and physical vitality, all aspects of Leo. Some sources say that Lughnasadh was a time for the crowning of kings, another correspondence of Leo. In some traditions this is a time when the corn god is sacrificed in order to guarantee the harvest, and the eating of bread is a major part of rituals and celebrations of the festival. The Lughnasadh festival was later reborn in Medieval Christianity as Lammas (loaf-mass), in which a loaf of bread made from the newly harvested wheat was brought to church. St. Catherine's Day was often celebrated at Lammas with the Catherine Wheel which was set aflame and rolled down a hill, reminiscent of the pagan fire festivals of the cross quarter days. This year the accurate cross-quarter date falls on August 6, with the closest Full Moon on August 8th. Wednesday, August 02, 2006DJ Ted Stevens and the Series of TubesI don't know how this ties into astrology, except perhaps that with Uranus retrograde our understanding of the internet may be going backwards as witnessed by the speech on the issue of net neutrality, which included brilliant statements like this one: "I just the other day got, an internet was sent by my staff at 10 o’clock in the morning on Friday and I just got it yesterday," and "[T]he internet is not something you just dump something on. It’s not a truck. It’s a series of tubes." Thanks to Jill at Brilliant at Breakfast for linking to this incredibly hilarious piece of video - sit down and watch the whole thing, it is the funniest piece ever, unless you stop to think that Ted Stevens, from whose brilliant words this piece derives, is head of the Senate Commerce Committee that is in charge of regulating (or trying to regulate) the internet. Thanks for the tip, Jeffrey, of another article from Celeb Astroblogy (I love the intro): Let me step back and strive for a more measured level of schadenfreude as we examine Mel's horoscope and find out why Yahweh has a bone to pick with him. Jeffrey Kishner also posted on Mel Gibson's Midheaven problems (thanks for the link Jeffrey!): Mel was born with a Pisces Midheaven. His public image is that of Christ and the alcoholic, both archetypal expressions of Pisces. Pisces has two rulers -- Neptune is the modern ruler, and Jupiter is the traditional ruler. His Jupiter is in Virgo, conjunct Pluto and square Saturn. Jupiter is the planet of religion and faith -- his beliefs (Jupiter) are somewhat critical (Virgo), and he is also extremist (Pluto) and judgmental and rigid (Saturn) with regards to issues of faith. Mel Gibson has long been one of the most likeable and bankable stars in Hollywood. His charming and amusing character in the Lethal Weapon series brought women streaming into the theaters, something unheard of for action films. However, during the promotion and distribution of his film the Passion of the Christ a couple of years ago, chinks began to appear in the armor of his well packaged presence as stories of Gibson's extremist views began to appear in the press.Although these views and the fear of the spread of anti-semitism that surrounded the release of the Passion of the Christ subsided, they erupted again this week when Gibson was arrested for drunk driving while speeding in Malibu. A leaked police report has now surfaced at tmz.com, revealing Gibson's statements including his saying over and over "My life is f*&cked." He also ranted about Jews being responsible for all the wars in the world (the arresting officer is Jewish) though he later apologized, saying that he has battled alcoholism throughout his life. Yesterday he issued a very peculiar statement, asking Jews to help him with his recovery in a frantic effort to salvage his reputation. Mel Gibson has a Capricorn Sun, with a strong focus in responsibility and hard work. The Capricorn nature is to lead and to seek authority and respect, and Gibson's Sun falls right on the cusp of his seventh house of marriage and partnerships, showing that these partnerships are very important to him and fuel his personal growth. (He has been married to the same partner for over 20 years, a rarity in Hollywood). Gibson has some challenging planetary systems in his chart, including a conjunction of Pluto (power issues) to Jupiter (philosophy and shared values). The combination of these two planets can indicate a person who seeks to impose through power and manipulation (Pluto) their values and ideology (Jupiter) onto others. Mars is conjunct Saturn in Gibson's chart, both in Scorpio which is ruled by Pluto and deals with issues of power and secrecy. Mars in Scorpio is extremely charismatic and sexy, but conjunct Saturn, which tends to be more repressive, it often doesn't find its full expression. The combination of Mars with Saturn can indicate a frustrated individual who is unable to activate the assertive urge of Mars, it's like driving with the brakes on. These combinations create a huge challenge as they constantly conflict and create a buildup of energy that needs to be released. Gibson's films have provided this release for him; they have tended to portray characters who are tortured emotionally and face physical abuses in order to attain their noble goals. Evidently Mel Gibson has battled alcoholism throughout his career as he attempted to keep these emotional challenges in check. Everyone now knows that Mel Gibson was arrested for drunk driving in Malibu California on July 28, and that the transcript of the arrest record shows that Gibson is currently experiencing a transit of Pluto in square to his Midheaven. The Midheaven is the point of highest aspiration in the birthchart; it also shows how our life is played out in the public eye. This cycle began for Gibson back in December and is currently in the second phase of the cycle. The television film on the Holocaust which was announced when Pluto first aspected Gibson's Midheaven has now, during the second phase, been canceled. The last phase of this cycle will take place in December, coinciding with the release of his next film Apocalypto (since Pluto rules death and rebirth, this is perfectly symbolic). The current scandal over Gibson's remarks in the current climate of religious conflict has already affected his career (Pluto transiting the Midheaven), but it may create an environment for him where real transformation can take place, and I suspect that what we are seeing is only the tip of the iceberg. But in the Midheaven, particularly since he is a public person, that transformation will take place squarely in the public eye. Tuesday, August 01, 2006Israel and the Second Saturn Return![]() Michael Lutin is best known as the astrologer who writes the Vanity Fair sun sign column, and as you know, I have little respect for astrologers who try to condense this ancient art into an attempt to predict the future based on sun signs. But he has some interesting things to say about Israel/Palestine and its second Saturn Return which is approaching beginning in September and continuing through next year, as well as the planetary influences on suicide bombers.. The Saturn Return occurs when Saturn returns to its place in the birthchart - the first Saturn Return occurs at age 28-30 and is a time when we are tested for our ability to leave childhood behind and grow into adulthood. It can be a time of great success, or great failures. The second Saturn Return is around age 56-59, and our ability to successfully navigate through life's structured passageways is confronted. This is the doorway to the "third age," the time when we begin to ease off our responsibilities (as represented by Saturn) and enjoy the fruits of our labors. From Michael Lutin: If you speak fluent Hebrew could you please explain to Israeli authorities what the Saturn return is all about? the Saturn return of Israel/Palestine means that the events of these past weeks will last well into 2007 This situation is setting off the Saturn return and what's going on there now is setting up a situation that's going to last a long long time The roots of this situation go back to 1977 then 1948 when Israel/Palestine was first formed and then back even further. To solve the problem new boundaries will eventually be created and that may take a long long time the Saturn return always demands respect for boundaries SUICIDE BOMBERS ARE GETTING YOUNGER WHY? As the kids born with pluto in Scorpio (1983-1994) grow into adulthood more individuals will be taking more risks be more obsessive and be willing to put themselves in harm's way insane or not this is Pluto in Scorpio Do the math. Then you'll see how long all this is going to last Until these kids turn forty. Probably. president george bush has just has his second saturn return in the twelfth house as saturn moves into leo everything that has been hidden will be leaking out and if he has acted with honor and integrity he has nothing to fear because if he has acted with honor and integrity and been truthful and sincere he doesn't have to worry about what people will think whether they agree with his policies or not. if, however, hee has been deceitful or been led astray or has been underhanded or done anything illegal, immoral or untoward he will have to aanswer for it because that's just what happens when saturn comes out of the twelfth house this is true for everybody who has leo rising and frankly all leos as well Oprah is exhausted beyond belief. So are all Aquarians. Donald Trump is coming out of one of the tightest spots he's ever been in. If you're a Gemini, take a lesson from him
