Skywatch is posted! And the Full Moon eclipse

From the March Skywatch, here's my take on the Full Moon eclipse on March 3.

The Full Moon on March 3 (at 6:21 pm est) is a lunar eclipse at 13 degrees Virgo. In a typical year there are typically two eclipse seasons, occurring every 173 days when the new or full moon is within five degrees of the moon's nodes. The nodes of the Moon symbolize our evolutionary journey - they are like signposts that point to our past and our future development. Consequently, eclipses are often significant events that instigate change and transformation, especially if they hit a sensitive point in your own individual chart.

The Virgo Full Moon deals with issues of material reality. Virgo is associated with the mundane world-the small details that weave the fabric of our life. In Virgo we focus our attention on our personal ecology - our health, fitness, cleanliness and integration of body, mind and spirit. At its worst, Virgo can be petty and nitpicking, overcautious and afraid. The Virgo Moon is opposite the Pisces Sun now, and the nodes follow the Virgo/Pisces axis as well. The Moon conjuncts the South Node, or the past, with the Sun conjoining the North Node (our future evolutionary direction). The South Node in our own chart shows what is familiar and comfortable, but also what holds us back, so this Full Moon eclipse is a good time to look at where we are held back by our negative Virgo qualities, and how we can use the more positive Pisces elements to accelerate our personal growth. Every sign has positive and negative attributes, and in Pisces our hearts begin to open up to unlimited compassion and empathy. We find in Pisces an experience of divine love and inspiration that transcends the boundaries of the ordinary reality of which Virgo is so fond. However, there is a danger of becoming lost in the ethers and losing our footing.

This Full Moon Eclipse is a powerful one including a tight aspect of Uranus conjunct the Sun in Pisces and opposing the Moon. Uranus urges us to defy convention; it shakes us out of our deep sleep and rattles our cages so that we can live a more authentic life. In opposition to this Full Moon, it may evoke a sense that we lack security - the change may be somewhat frightening. Uranus propels us into the unknown; it's exhilarating if we let go and nervewracking if we hold on. Fortunately this influence is softened by a trine of Venus to Chiron that adds a gentle (Venus) healing touch (Chiron) and facilitates our forward movement. This Eclipse is about leaving behind that which is safe and secure (Virgo/South Node) and moving into an exciting though unknown (Sun/Uranus) future (North Node) that brings us closer to a transcendent experience of truth and bliss (Neptune).

Geeky astrological detail:
A "yod" is formed by the opposition of the Moon/South Node to the Sun/Uranus/North Node which sextiles both Venus and Chiron. Venus and Chiron are both quincunx the Moon, applying pressure for change without actually forcing a crisis.

US and China markets takes a dive

photo from cnn.com

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell over 416 points yesterday, a 3% drop that is said to be the worst since the day the markets opened after September 11. The drop came in reaction to a massive sell-off in Chinese equities, but this is probably a natural correction to the "irrational exuberance" fostered by last year's passage of Jupiter through Scorpio, the sign that rules equity investments, followed by the current relentless optimism of Jupiter in Sagittarius.

I know I'm sounding like a broken record (Saturn/Neptune all the time), but Saturn is nearly exactly opposite Neptune now in the second phase of this cycle. Typically, when a planetary cycle includes multiple phases due to the phenomenon of retrogradation in which one or both of the planets appear to be moving backwards from our perspective on earth, the first phase of the cycle is like a wake-up call. We're rustled from our sleep, wake up and say "Huh???" The second phase is often when the work really begins. We can't go back to sleep now, we're wide awake and having to deal with the energy of the planetary influences.

It seems to me that the market crash has more to do with the confrontation of our illusion (Neptune) and the need to face reality (Saturn) than any particular market fundamentals. In addition, Mercury being retrograde means we have to go back and correct some of the mistakes from the past.

Still, this may be a good time to pick up some stock bargains, but I would wait until after the eclipse on March 3 and Mercury's direct turn on March 7, just to be on the safe side. Pick up your gains now, because when Pluto enters Capricorn in 2008 it may be time to take your money out of the stock market.

Saturn Neptune and the Pseudoscience debate

A battle on the internet over religion seeks to "dump religion from our culture," says the individual who started the Blasphemy Challenge on YouTube. "We want to get rid of this supernatural belief in the same way that it would be great if we could dump astrology or phrenology and all of the other pseudosciences."

This confrontation (Saturn) over the mysterious (Neptune) is clearly reaching a head as Saturn opposes Neptune, and the conflict is becoming very frothy indeed. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few months as the cycle continues until its conclusion next summer.

Mercury retrogrades back into Aquarius

Mercury has been traveling through Pisces for the past few weeks, but as it retrogrades it is now moving back into Aquarius. The passing of retrograde Mercury back through a sign it has completed tends to bring back issues of that sign that are not yet complete. In Pisces Mercury is creative, there is an emotional softening and powerful empathy. Mercury in Pisces is flexible, but Mercury in Aquarius can be somewhat dogmatic.

Mercury in Aquarius is the sign of reason, and there is a return to practicality now. Any fuzzy- headed decisions made while Mercury was in Pisces, particularly while it retrograded through that sign, may have to be revised or reworked now. In Aquarius Mercury wakes up, there is an electrifying awareness that sees clearly. Creative projects inspired by Mercury in Pisces may wither in the Aquarian light of day, or they may be seen for the brilliant piece of magic that they are. Retrograde periods bring us closer to truth as errors are corrected, but we are asked to be more flexible, more adaptable, and more willing for change.

Update: Mercury is also making a sextile now to Pluto, an aspect that will be exact on the 28th but is in effect now. The harmonious combination of Mercury's communication function with the transformative power of Pluto can add energy and depth to any projects where communication or the processing of information is involved and can add the intensity we may need in order to complete outstanding commitments. Pluto also helps us to get the most out of our daily life since Mercury governs how we process those experiences. This aspect will be in orb for another day or two.

Film crew finds DNA of Jesus?

This story falls under lots of categories: Saturn opposing Neptune and destroying the illusion; Pluto in Sagittarius and turning our established theology and religions upside down, and possibly even the end of the Age of Pisces.

When Pluto entered Sagittarius, I had a feeling that this would be the beginning of a series of revelations about mainstream mythologies, and this could be the big one:

Inscribed in Hebrew, Latin or Greek, six boxes -- taken from a 2,000-year-old cave discovered in 1980 during excavation for a housing project in Talpiyot, south of Jerusalem -- bear the names: Yeshua [Jesus] bar Yosef [son of Joseph]; Maria [the Latin version of Miriam, which is the English Mary]; Matia [the Hebrew equivalent of Matthew, a name common in the lineage of both Mary and Joseph]; Yose [the Gospel of Mark refers to Yose as a brother of Jesus]; Yehuda bar Yeshua, or Judah, son of Jesus; and in Greek, Mariamne e mara, meaning 'Mariamne, known as the master.' According to Harvard professor François Bovon, interviewed in the film, Mariamne was Mary Magdalene's real name.

The bones contained in the boxes have long since been reburied, according to Jewish custom, in unmarked graves in Israel.

If the evidence adduced is correct, the bone boxes, and microscopic remains of DNA still contained inside, would constitute the first archeological evidence of the existence of the Christian saviour and his family.

Tests on mitochondrial DNA obtained from the Jesus and Mariamne boxes and conducted at Lakehead University's Paleo-DNA laboratory in Thunder Bay, show conclusively that the two individuals were not maternally related. According to Carney Matheson, head of the lab, this likely means they were related by marriage.
More on this later!

Supernovas and Magnetars

Thanks to Universe Today for this fantastic photo of Supernova 1987A (click photo to enlarge).

It's hard to say whether supernovas contain any astrological symbolism that we can use, but there's no doubt about the gamma ray energy that is released from these powerful explosions may have an effect that reaches us here on earth. Metaphysician Moira Timms writes:
Bioelectrically sensitive herself, Timms is conducting research with a local utility company in Eugene, Oregon to determine the effects of pulsed fields on human bioelectric systems. The weakening of the earth's magnetosphere means that more ultraviolet and cosmic rays are penetrating the planet, affecting our biosystems, she notes. With the advent of the Blue Star Supernova', which occurred on February 23, 1987, every person on the planet was potentially bombarded with more neutrinos (subatomic, massless, chargeless particles) than the sun will radiate in its entire ten-billion-year lifetime! Immediately thereafter, we were showered with ultraviolet, infrared, X and gamma rays that supposedly produced as much radiation as all the stars and galaxies in the visible universe combined!

Timms states that, Unquestionably, our subtle, or etheric bodies were influenced, our DNA, our psyches, even the core of Earth that generates the magnetic field which energizes the planetary grid. Mythically speaking, neutrinos can be seen as the spirit force of the stars or, as Keys to Enoch author J.J. Hurtak sees it, as seeds of light'. Neutrinos may be what ancient alchemists referred to as scintillae or infinitesimal sparks of light that emanated from the spirit of God as seed ideas of nature', the origin of species', the vital force urging organisms toward completion. Coverage of the supernova in Scientific American included the statement that supernovas make and expel the seeds of life. According to Timms, who discusses psychologist Carl Jung's theories on the subject in her book, The psychological meaning of these seeds of light is clear, they are germinal luminosities emanating from the darkness of the unconscious as well as the external seeds of light from supernovas in the darkness of deep space.

Saturn/Neptune, the Dog Whisperer and the Boundaries of Compassion

photo from Cesar Millan's Dog Psychology Center.

I'm a little behind on my tv viewing, and last night I watched part of a Dog Whisperer episode that I missed about Howie, the (adorable) rescue dog that lived at an animal hospital in Atlanta because he was "unadoptable." Howie had been terribly abused before his rescue, and while his body had healed he was still terrified and growled whenever anyone new came near him. The ladies who cared for him were very protective of him and did all they could to keep him safe. He lived at the animal hospital for two years before Cesar Millan came to help Howie become adoptable.

When Cesar arrived, he found that Howie had been indoors for two years. Because of his abuse, his foster moms had been afraid to put a leash on him for fear it would bring back memories of the terrible times. They felt he had been through so much, and they just wanted to keep him safe and loved. Cesar always says that dogs live in the moment, and that if we keep living in the past and reinforcing that for them that they will never heal.

Chiron teaches us that our desire to heal others often stems from a wound within ourselves. In the highest form of this "Wounded Healer" archetype, we wait to heal others until we ourselves have been healed. Once we have walked into the fire and shadows of our own wounds and the energy held in the cellular memory has been released, we then experience the empathy to be able to help others heal. However, there is a shadow side to the Wounded Healer in which the wounds of the patient activate the wounds of a healing provider who has not yet fully healed. Jung called this phenomenon "countertransference," and in this circumstance the patient and healer become locked in a drama from which neither can escape without outside help. This is likely what happened with Howie the rescue dog and the ladies who rescued him.

Those of us (myself included) who rescue animals or who otherwise have rescue fantasies are sensitive souls who have been wounded and who seek to heal ourselves through healing the animals we rescue. This is a Neptunian experience, since Neptune bestows boundless compassion, sensitivity, and an empathy which causes us to experience the suffering of others as if it were our own. While these are beautiful qualities, without the boundaries and discipline of Saturn we become codependent and unable to be effective in either our own healing process or the process of others. Cesar Millan's famous refrain "rules, boundaries, and limitations" is the Saturn influence that, when combined with the Neptunian empathy, creates a truly effective healer.

I have had to learn this the hard way. With Saturn on one side of my Sun and Neptune on the other, it has taken me a lifetime to learn to balance the two. For years I tried to rescue myself by rescuing others, and finally realized that until the work on myself was closer to completion I would never be able to help anyone else. In the story of Howie, his rescuers were so overcome with grief and compassion at the plight from which he was rescued, they were unable to perform the simplest act that would complete the healing process: put a leash around his neck and take him for a walk. It was evident that Cesar felt compassion for Howie when he gently encouraged Howie to take his first steps outside. But the boundaries that he maintained in not falling into the pool of Howie's pain helped him to truly heal this dog.

In the same way, those of us with strong Neptunian influences (planets aspecting Neptune or in Pisces and the twelfth house which are ruled by Neptune) need to cultivate the influence of Saturn in order to function effectively in the world. Cesar Millan's pragmatic approach to dog psychology teaches dog owners this balance, but his lessons are valuable for anyone who lives on Planet Earth.

Eclipses are coming!

I'll be adding my point of view on the upcoming March eclipse series as we get closer to the event, but meanwhile Jeffrey has written a great article on the subject:
Anticipation of eclipses tends to bring out a "sky is falling" mentality in many people, especially if the eclipse closely conjuncts the Sun in one's natal chart. There are some doom-and-gloom websites out there -- which I find irresponsible, but I also understand that the nature of consciousness has changed since old times. Astrology seems less deterministic than when a royal astrologer could predict accurately that a king would die from a head wound by a spear [although I frankly doubt that astrologers could ever make this kind of prediction - I believe most of the stories about exact predictions to be legends rather than history].

Eclipses are powerful events, indeed. Their impact lasts longer than your typical lunation, as the Sun and Moon are conjunct the Lunar Nodes. The Nodes relate to our spiritual progress, our karmic past, our fated connections with people.

::Bernadette Brady quotes snipped::

Thus, the best advice for someone who will be directly impacted by an eclipse -- meaning that the Moon makes a conjunction or hard aspect to a major point in one's chart -- is to be open to whatever major overhaul your psyche requires. To fight against this energy is to court a destructive earthquake. Change will happen regardless -- whether it is smooth or turbulent is, at least to some extent, under your control. Not completely under your control, because there are cosmic forces at work, gods who have their own plans for us. The best use of astrology is to understand our charts and these forces so that we can be prepared for the changes to come. This preparation requires both work and receptivity to change. The work can range from spiritual practices (meditation, yoga, shamanism) to psychotherapy and somatic practices (dance, movement) to writing in a journal or talking to a friend. Insight is not enough. One can theoretically understand that one's intimate partnerships need illumination, but the reality of this experience often includes the opening of closets, skeletons and all; the end of relationships; the jarring introduction of new elements into one's life. Are you open enough to accept all that the Universe wants to offer you?

Hillary, Obama and the Saturn Return

Hillary Clinton's campaign is sniping at former supporters who are flirting with the idea of supporting Barack Obama. Says Arianna Huffington at a campaign event for Obama this week, "It's like being married, and suddenly you fall in love. You're a good person, and a loyal person ... you have a history with the Clintons,'' she said. "And you feel like you're cheating.''

Last week her popularity took a hit when she refused to apologize for voting to give the President war powers in 2002. Her campaign staff railed against John Edwards when he suggested that she, like he should apologize for their error, calling Edwards' tactic a betrayal of other Democrats. Yet this week when David Geffen made comments about Bill Clinton in a column by Maureen Dowd, the Clinton campaign brought out all of their guns to retaliate, demanding that Obama return Geffen's large donation.

None of this is making Hillary look very good, and it comes as Saturn is returning to its place in her birthchart and transiting Chiron (the wounded healer) is making a square to her natal Chiron, as referenced in this earlier article. These are both highly personal transits that evoke emotional reactions, making this a difficult time for Hillary to be conducting a highly public campaign. Her relationships are being challenged right now (with Venus conjunct Chiron in her natal chart, Venus is also affected by the Chiron transit). In April, transiting Chiron will oppose Pluto in her chart, exposing the cracks (Chiron) in the armor of her power (Pluto). These challenging planetary cycles can be times of great strength and personal development, but they can also break down our defenses making this a difficult time to be in the public eye.

Al Franken: He's good enough, he's smart enough, and doggone it, people like him!

Unless your political views fall on the right side of the aisle, it's hard not to like Al Franken. I have long been a fan of Al Franken, even though his trivialization of the power of affirmations (via Stuart Smalley on Saturday Night Live) went against the grain of my own belief system. Still, he's a smart and funny guy, and when in 1999 he wrote his book "Why Not Me?" about his mythical run for the Presidency in the 2000 election, I agreed, why not him?

Although his pet project, Air America Radio, has faltered and declared bankruptcy, it spawned a new generation of successful left-leaning talk radio shows such as the Stephanie Miller and Ed Schulz shows on the Jones Radio network. Unabashedly partisan, these liberal talk shows have given a new voice to the millions of people frustrated with the turn to the right of the media.

Last year Jill and I went to see Al Franken speak before a showing of his film "And God Spoke," and watched as Al choked back tears when talking about his political mentor Paul Wellstone. In 2005 Al and his wife Franni moved back to Minnesota in anticipation of his 2008 run for the seat that Wellstone held, a run that last week became official.

Al Franken was born under the sign of Taurus, but he is in the last 13 minutes of that sign, almost into the sign of Gemini. (Click chart to enlarge) This is sometimes called a "cusp" at the late degrees of a sign; in this situation the characteristics of the next sign begin to bleed in. (When a planet is in the early degrees of a sign, however, there is no bleeding from the previous sign). The safety and security required by Taurus is very much a part of who he is, but the restlessness and hunger for variety of Gemini is also strong in his psychological makeup.

Al's Sun is within 15 minutes of a conjunction to Mars in Gemini, and this strengthens the Gemini influence even more, giving him a strong drive (Mars) to communicate his opinions and ideas. The conjunction of Mars to the Sun often bestows a tremendous amount of physical energy and an aggressive or assertive personality that is not afraid to express one's own needs and desires. Over the past six years many of us that lean to the left have become very angry at what we view as the destruction of the political process and global good will that the Bush administration has created, and Al Franken is no exception. This has gained him the reputation on the right of being an angry person, but this is not shown in his chart. Aggressive, yes. Fearless in his self-expression, yes (both shown by the Mars/Sun combination). But not angry.

Al's Moon is in the happy-go-lucky sign of Sagittarius, the sign of optimism and expansion, suggesting that he has a need to keep his emotions (Moon) from becoming bogged down in negativity. The Sagittarian Moon has a need to search for meaning in life; there is a need for adventure and exploring other cultures and ideals. There is also a tendency to be opinionated and tactless, and those of us who have listened to Franken's radio show have been a witness to these characteristics as well. Still - this factor in Al's chart shows his sense of humor and ability to poke fun (Sagittarius) at those who irritate him (Sun/Mars).

Mercury in Al's chart is in Taurus, which is a fixed sign that can be extremely stubborn. Like its symbol the bull, Taurus does not like change and Mercury in Taurus shows an individual with very fixed ideas. There is a tenacious quality here as well, and a perseverance that goes beyond that of ordinary individuals. Mercury in Taurus is not sensitive to criticism, but neither is it flexible to adaptation. It will be nearly impossible for Al to ever admit that he is wrong. This is exacerbated by Jupiter in Al's chart which falls in Aries, the sign of the warrior.

Jupiter in the chart shows where we find abundance and opportunity, but also where we become overconfident and reckless. Because Aries is ruled by Mars (the god of war), the placement of Jupiter in Aries magnifies the effect of Al's Sun/Mars conjunction and shows that the warrior image is very strong for him. Aries and Mars generate the element of fire, and this strong fiery quality provides inspiration and energy that is exciting and contagious to others. There can also be a tendency towards self-centeredness; but still, there is an ability to get things done and to inspire enthusiasm and excitement in others.

Venus in the birthchart shows how we express our affection for others and what we need in our relationships, and Al's Venus is in Cancer, the sign of the family. This placement shows his sensitive side and that nurturing the people he loves is important to him, but in his chart Venus conjuncts Uranus, the sign of autonomy and freedom. Al is someone who despite his long marriage craves independence and freedom, and it is likely that his marriage has survived for so long because his career has included nearly constant travel. The planet of discipline and responsibility, Saturn, makes a trine to his Sun which suggests that despite this need (Venus/Uranus) for space and distance he has a strong sense of responsibility and commitment (Saturn) that provides an underlying motivation for stability in his life.

The picture of Al Franken that is generated by his astrological chart is that of a stubborn yet persistent (Mercury in Taurus) visionary leader (Jupiter in Aries, Sun/Mars conjunction), who cares about other people (Venus in Cancer). Al has the energy and intelligence for political life; however, his political life so far has been in poking fun at others. In politics there is a give and take and a need to listen to the opinions of others. This quality is less visible in Al Franken's chart.

This will be a good year for Al Franken as beneficent Jupiter creates an expansive influence for him. He could very well be a viable candidate for Senate in 2008.

Venus in Aries

Image from Bella Online, source unknown.

Lovely Venus has entered the sign of her warrior lover Ares, leaving the misty realms of love and universal compassion for the battleground. Venus in Aries seeks the courage to stand up for ourselves and achieve our own needs, even while in relationship with others. In Aries, Venus establishes solid boundaries and defends them well.

Venus shows our tastes and aesthetics as well as our sense of values, and in Aries we value strength and honor. At its best, Aries is the knight of the age of chivalry, brave and true to god and country. At its worst, Aries becomes the wanton god of war, filled with bloodlust and a ruthless desire for pleasure with no heed to its cost.

As Venus travels through Aries for the next few weeks, it makes only harmonious aspects to other planets, bringing out the best in this combination. Venus will sextile Chiron on March 3 and will trine Saturn on March 9 with a sextile to Neptune the next day. The influence of Venus on the opposition between Saturn and Neptune will have a softening influence on that difficult dynamic, and perhaps an additional fluidity in the resolution of issues that have come to a head as Saturn's reality check confronts Neptune's fantasies.

Jupiter in Sagittarius and the Fear and Greed Index

There was a story on NPR this morning about the Fear and Greed Index:
When the index is low, fear is the dominant emotion. Investors tread warily. But when it's high, greed is in the driving seat and no one seems to believe that prices can fall.

The index, says the investment bank, has just hit an all-time high and that means a full-scale slump in riskier assets could be in the offing.
Last year's square of Saturn and Jupiter caused many of us to predict a downturn in the markets, but the expansion of Jupiter traveling through Scorpio (dealing with other people's money) combined with the generally irrational exuberance of Pluto in Sagittarius seems to have kept the market afloat. Now with Jupiter in Sag coinciding with Pluto's last pass through that exceedingly optimistic sign, it may be the last opportunity for stock market gains that occur merely because investors are optimistic.

The stock market is based upon the principle of abundance: when investors believe the market is going up, people buy stocks and companies have more money to invest in producing more product, which is then bought by more people, who then have more money to invest in stocks and even more product. Abundance and the principle of expansion is associated with Sagittarius, which means this could be the last year of stock market gains before the major reality check of Pluto entering Capricorn in 2008.

Astrology and the False Identity

Susan has a post today that reminded me of an experience I had before I was married. She writes:
I know astrology works. I have made mistakes in casting charts that have proved to me that it is valid. When I cast the wrong time, the charts didn't fit the person, and the timing of events was off. When I corrected the chart, it made more sense and the timing was correct.
I experienced this also with a clients once; I began the reading and the client could not relate to anything that I said. I double checked her birth data I found I was off by ten days. The reading then was accurate.

Years ago, I met a gentleman that I was interested in, and since I was an astrologer when we started to get closer I asked him for his birth information. I did his chart, and was mystified. The chart did not reflect the person that I was getting to know. The chart using the birth data he gave me was for a more aggressive individual than the sensitive person I was getting to know; the chart had a strong Mars and Aries component and lacked a watery complement. I related my confusion to him, whereupon he admitted that he had gone underground in the 1960s and taken on a false identity in order to avoid the draft for the war in Vietnam. To this day I think that that I am the only person who knows his true identity and the story behind his adopted birthdate.

I have been surprised at the vehemence with which some people want to disprove astrology. Juno in the comments suggested that the burgeoning number of articles trying to prove/disprove astrology is connected with the Saturn/Neptune opposition (fact/mystery) and I certainly agree. But I think there's an interesting element to the psychology of people who are determinedly skeptical and out to prove that mystery and magic do not exist, and I present the idea that for these people the idea of the mysterious is frightening and therefore rejected in its totality. The opposition of Saturn to Neptune can be destabilizing, as I've said, and when the boat starts rocking some people reach immediately for the anchors.

Some things just work.

Recently these pages witnessed a dramatic debate over whether astrology could be or had been proven in the now defunct Skeptics Challenge. (I learned my lesson - as revealed by a commentator, skeptics don't have an open mind but require scientific, not experiential, proof.) At any rate, this appeared in our local newspaper column, the People's Pharmacy: No Science Behind Soap Remedy.
Sometimes a remedy defies logic. Usually there’s no science to support it either. That’s certainly the case when it comes to putting a bar of soap under the bottom sheet to stop leg cramps or restless legs.

One reader (who happens to have doctorates in biomedical engineering and physics) took us to task for suggesting this remedy. He asked, “What is the mechanism of action for a bar of soap under your sheets for relieving any type of pain? Answering that this is anything but an old wives’ tale discredits everything you have done in the name of science.

“As a fellow scientist and university faculty member, I feel it is your responsibility to educate your readers using accepted scientific principles. When you do not, you are performing a disservice to the rest of us.

We can’t pretend that soap under the sheet is anything more than a folk remedy. We can’t explain how it would work, and we don’t know for sure that it does. Nonetheless, we have been impressed with readers reporting success.

One wrote: “I've been a long-time sufferer of sciatica. Recently, I was diagnosed with degenerative joint disease resulting in tarsal tunnel syndrome in my left foot. The pain was nearly unbearable. After your column on the soap mystery, I could not believe it but I thought I have little to lose.

“I keep the bar of soap underneath my sheets all the time. It's been over a month, and I've been noticing much less pain and more energy. I shared the article with a co-worker who also is benefiting. Her sister, a nurse, is puzzled by this.”

Their training may predispose nurses to be cautious: “Being a nurse, I was VERY skeptical about the soap remedy. Statin medicines give me leg cramps. I decided the bar of soap could do no harm. It worked the very first night and has continued to work for the past three months. I can't figure out how it can possibly help, but it does.”

Another reader found a bar of soap more helpful than prescription pain relievers: “I had an unsuccessful replacement of my right knee 18 months ago and my left thigh suffers from meralgia paresthetica (thigh nerve pain).
The article goes on with more testimonials. This is not a column written by wackos, these people have degrees in pharmacology and Joe is a consultant to the FTC. I tried to find an article debunking the soap remedy, but all I found were more testimonials and the odd fact that the remedy doesn't work with Dial or Dove. But the point is that not everything can be explained by science. Some things just work!

War and Saturn/Neptune

A comment from Cathy to the previous post reports:

I looked back on previous oppositions between Saturn and Neptune and the wars that were going on then did not end when the aspect ended. Far from it!

1971-72 - Vietnam didn't end until 1975. In fact Nixon's slogan was "peace with honor". It sounds very Neptunian and Saturnian but when U.S. forces are SO uncompromising, it's just not going to happen under this opposition.

1936-37 - The Spanish working class (Neptune) revolted against the fascist govt (Saturn). Hitler supported the Spanish govt and began a quest for ethnic cleansing (Saturn) against the Jews (Neptune). WWII was actually started under this aspect.

I'm not thinking the war in Iraq is going to end too soon. I'm wondering if some sort of boundary thing will happen like making tribal boundaries (Saturn) to create peace (Neptune).

This is the partition idea, which makes a lot of sense to me as a solution to the Iraq problem especially as we leave Pluto in Sagittarius and move into Pluto in Capricorn. Capricorn strives to create limits and impose discipline, but Pluto turns upside down every sign that it passes through. Under Pluto there is often a breakdown and regeneration of the issues of the sign that reflects its current phase. In Capricorn we will see the breakdown of structures that that no longer serve the highest good: governmental structures, corporations, boundaries of "nations" that were cobbled together after the world wars of the 20th century. Iraq is one such "nation" - after the defeat of the Ottoman Empire the lands were partitioned into artificially defined "states". These boundaries are artificial and certainly don't serve the people. It took a dictator like Saddam and before him another "strong man" to keep the country together.

I strongly believe that the Universe is continually moving towards wholeness, both in the microcosm of our personal lives and the wider macrocosm of national politics. Pluto destroys that which no longer serves us in order to effect transformation and evolution, and that is true on the global scale as well as on the personal level.

Saturn/Neptune in the News

Saturn is nearly exactly opposite Neptune now, and there are a lot of qualities to this configuration. Deception (Neptune) is confronted by law (Saturn). The mysterious (Neptune) is being challenged by pragmatism (Saturn). Big Brother (Saturn) wants to spy on your private life (Neptune). Here are just three fascinating stories that mirror these dynamics:

The armed forces reveals a UFO presence in Chile:
The military photographs and videos were revealed late Tuesday evening. They included a photograph of a spherical metallic object captured flying over Antarctica and a video of Navy ships being pursued by a luminous object in 2000.

Also presented at the conference was a report by Rodrigo Bravo, Captain of the Army’s Fifth Division, who talked to a rapt audience about his thesis, entitled “Observations of unidentified aerial phenomena identified by the Civil Air Force.” While Bravo’s talk was not technically representative of the institution’s position on UFOs, he had been authorized to give it by his commander-in-chief.
A house bill would require ISP's to keep records on subscribers.
"The Smith proposal would give the attorney general carte blanche to require service providers to keep all information imaginable on every one of their users," said Kate Dean, executive director of the U.S. Internet Service Provider Association, which represents the nine major providers, including AOL, AT&T, Microsoft, Yahoo and Comcast.
In a bizarre twist of fate, Oliver North tells the truth, which means Lieberman and McCain are lying.
Oliver North visited Hannity & Colmes Friday night, February 9, 2007, to talk about Happy Iraq and Evil Liberals. But at the end, he let slip to Alan Colmes that military commanders in Iraq never said they wanted more troops, despite the claims of Senators Lieberman and McCain to the contrary. With video.
Added Monday morning:

Henry Waxman, Senate Watchdog, asks Paul Bremer to account for a missing $12 billion in cash.
A House committee report on Tuesday questioned whether some of the billions of dollars in cash shipped to Iraq after the American invasion — mostly in huge, shrink-wrapped stacks of $100 bills — might have ended up with the insurgent groups now battling American troops.

::snip::

Bremer defended his performance as head of the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq, noting that the United States had to bring tons of American dollars into Iraq because the country had no functioning banking system.
and meanwhile Al-Qaeda, the organization that actually attacked the US, is regaining strength:
WASHINGTON, Feb. 18 — Senior leaders of Al Qaeda operating from Pakistan have re-established significant control over their once-battered worldwide terror network and over the past year have set up a band of training camps in the tribal regions near the Afghan border, according to American intelligence and counterterrorism officials.

American officials said there was mounting evidence that Osama bin Laden and his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, had been steadily building an operations hub in the mountainous Pakistani tribal area of North Waziristan. Until recently, the Bush administration had described Mr. bin Laden and Mr. Zawahri as detached from their followers and cut off from operational control of Al Qaeda.

I was hoping for a bigger bang, like a major revelation that would get us out of the war in Iraq. Maybe that will come before the final phase of the Saturn/Neptune cycle next summer unless Neptune keeps the blinders on.

Happy Chinese New Year!

This New Moon marks the New Year of the Chinese calendar, and 2007 is the Year of the Golden Pig. In Chinese astrology, each year is represented by twelve different animals with the pig being the final animal in the cycle. Concurrent to the twelve-year animal cycle is cycle of the five elements, so 2007 is the year of the Fire Pig. The Fire Pig, being associated with red and gold, is associated with wealth, abundance and fertility since red is a lucky color and gold is an indicator of wealth.
[T]he pig is often seen as a symbol of fortune and good luck. This is partly because of the porker's portly profile---the corpulent beast certainly appears well fed. But it's more than that. In a society that for centuries was primarily agricultural, it was considered a blessing for families to have many children. In this regard, the pig is quite a fortunate character, as female pigs commonly give birth to ten or more piglets at a time. Naturally, the pig came to symbolize fertility. The association of the pig with procreational productivity, however, is not restricted to Korea, or even the Far East. Many pre-Christian societies in the West, including the ancient Celts, also considered the pig a symbol of fertility.
Chinese astrology has never meant much to me, but because we create our reality, the expectation of an abundant year, whether a year of the pig or otherwise, can't be a bad thing.

In preparation for the March eclipse series...

JM has quite a bit of information on the lunar nodes right now. I love her blog Raging Universe, it's exhilarating and effervescent and wise, all at once. And with beautiful art as well.

In March we have a series of lunar eclipses coming up involving the Pisces/Virgo polarity (more on that later), but this is a good article to read about the nodes. The nodes, like everything else astrological, have a wide scope of meaning from the prosaic (the south node is what's familiar and holds you back and the north node is your highest and best progress) to the karmic (the south node is what you bring in from past lives that is not yet finished, and the north node points the evolutionary direction.

Often we feel we have to work hard to get to our north node, but in my experience our higher self is taking care of that progression. We don't make it happen - we just make the day-to-day decisions that will bring us in harmony with our evolutionary path.

When does the Age of Aquarius start?

"Aquarius" from Eclipse of the Firefly gallery

I've been surprised to still find writings that fix the beginning of the Age of Pisces at year zero, roughly coinciding with the birth of Jesus, with the Age of Aquarius beginning in the year 2000. This is a historical fallacy and not based in any kind of astrological or astronomical principle. For one thing, each age is approximately 2160 years. Many astronomers put the beginning of the age of Pisces at 498 b.c.e., indicating entry into Aquarius in approximately 2658 c.e. From Wikipedia:
In 1928, at the Conference of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in Leiden, the Netherlands, the edges of the 88 official constellations became defined in astronomical terms. The edge established between Pisces and Aquarius locates the beginning of the Aquarian Age around the year 2600.

The Austrian astronomer, Professor Hermann Haupt, examined the question of when the Age of Aquarius begins in an article published in 1992 by the Austrian Academy of Science: with the German title Der Beginn des Wassermannzeitalters, eine astronomische Frage? (The Start of the Aquarian Age, an Astronomical Question?). Based on the boundaries accepted by IAU in 1928, Haupt's article investigates the start of the Age of Aquarius by calculating the entry of the spring equinox point over the parallel cycle (d = - 4°) between the constellations Pisces and Aquarius and reaches, using the usual formula of precession (Gliese, 1982), the year 2595.
This interesting site gives astronomical star maps redrawn from ancient Greek writings to show why this date works. However, because of the lack of clear boundaries between the constellations it is impossible to clearly state a date at which the Age of Pisces will give way to the Age of Aquarius. Astrologers typically give an "orb of influence" of up to 5 degrees for a planet entering a 30 degree sign; the correlating orb for an age that last 2160 years would be a period of about 360 years.

Some writers with a New Age perspective have proposed that we are already in the Aquarian Age because of the accelerating pace of technological inventions. But the transition from one age to another seems to involve no less than a complete shift in cultural paradigms. The last Aquarian Age, at around 28-30,000 b.c.e., marked the abrupt disappearance of the Neanderthals and the sudden takeover of Cro Magnon man.

In the best of all possible worlds, humans could evolve during this phase into enlightened beings, able to link the best of science with the best of spirit in a Utopian paradise of freedom and justice for everyone. Or will we face another future involving the worst of the Aquarian dynamic akin to a science fiction film: a fiercely rational and scientific future that requires perfection, using technology to create perfect humans through cloning and control of the masses via genetically manipulated food and computerized thought police? Like the Terminator and Matrix movies, will machines (technology) take over? Mark Pesce (cited in this article), developer of the VRML markup language, writes:
It could be the perfection of artificial intelligence -- emergent, hyperintelligent, possibly malevolent, or the complete mastery of the physical world through nanotechnology -- which could melt us all into a puddle of the fabled gray goo, or the radical augmentation of innate human abilities into a final trans-human form.

Aquarian New Moon

"New Moon over the Atlantic" by Mark Daffey from art.com

The New Moon on February 17 links the Sun and the Moon in Aquarius, the sign of idealism, innovation and revolution. Aquarius is the radical, the inventor - it seeks to change the status quo and provides vision for change. There is an electrical quality to Aquarius that can be unsettling for those of us who are more earth-bound, but if we let go to our attachment to the Way Things Are, the Aquarian process can be exhilarating.

The New Moon is the beginning of the lunar cycle and is therefore a good time for beginnings of all kinds. In the Islamic calendar the New Moon is determined as the exact time when the first crescent of the moon is actually seen, but the astrological New Moon is considered the conjunction of the Sun and Moon. The conscious Self and the instinctual Moon conjoin and there is a new focus and new direction.

This New Moon is exactly sextile to Pluto, a harmonious interaction that facilitates transformation and new beginnings (Pluto) and a letting go of anything that keeps us from being our authentic selves (Aquarius). This is the one of a series of New Moons in the last degrees of a sign, symbolizing a new beginning that arises from completion of the past. The addition of Pluto to the mix, with its ability to remove from our path anything that no longer serves us, shows that we are at the end of this cycle of beginnings that are endings and ready to move into the future with renewed clarity.

There is also an exact square of Jupiter to the Moon's nodes, suggesting that the urge for expansion and the search for meaning (Jupiter) conflicts now with the natural evolutionary process (the lunar nodes). The challenging transits of Jupiter can bring over-expansion and over-confidence, and these qualities can keep us from our path if we're not careful now. Jupiter is still within range of its square to Uranus, a rather eccentric and even reckless dynamic that will remain in effect for much of the year. Jupiter expands the desire of Uranus for change, and because Uranus rules Aquarius, this Aquarian New Moon resonates with the same vibration and will be deeply affected by the Jupiter/Uranus combination.

Change is what is called for now - letting go of any shackles that hold us back and stepping boldly into the future. Uranus, and the Aquarian influence which is its partner, is the awakener; it shakes us out of our deep sleep and opens our eyes to a new day. The entire world is alive with new possibilities now but we should not forget the beauty of moderation.

More on the Archway UFO mystery

Watch the video here.

There has been virtually no media coverage of this event outside of a few minor journals in the UK. I found an article that reports a wedding having released Chinese-style "glow" lanterns that very day. However, the glow lanterns that I found on the internet don't look anything like UFOs.

One astute writer found this site with "fire balloons" that look rather like the glowing balls in the video. Still, even if these balloons were six feet tall, when hovering thousands of feet above the spectators I would think they would appear to be very tiny, not huge twinkling glowing orange balls.

There has been no investigation of the O'Hare sighting in Chicago, despite reports by pilots and other credible witnesses and a nearly complete news blackout on both of these events.

I found a report of another sighting in January that had not been reported in the major media: this time retired Air Force colonel Brian Fields, a Christian who did not believe in alien life forms, took pictures of lights that appear similar to the ones reported in the UK. Fields is reported to have said, "Be awake, be mindful you can be deceived," he said. "There are things that can shake our world."

Whether these events are indeed UFOs or not, they deserve to be investigated so that the truth can be discovered.

Happy Valentine's Day

Image from the Tarot of Love, courtesy of angelpaths.com

There is no mistaking the power of love, but as this Valentine's Day falls very close to the exact opposition of Saturn to Neptune, a transit where the lovely fantasies of Neptune are destroyed by Saturn's reality check, it seems more appropriate to write about the source of true love - the love that is generated within our own spirit and psyche.

Gary Zukav writes,
The experiences of romantic love are real. You feel exhilaration, excitement, attraction, fulfilled, loveable and complete. It is the perceived source of these experiences that is illusory. You are the source, not another individual. When you attribute to another individual the ability to make you feel these things, you become powerless. As you begin to cultivate the parts of yourself that are the true source of these experiences, you become powerful. When you become powerful, you are able to interact with others without dependency and without expectations. You are able to act from an empowered heart and not be attached to the outcome. The first experience—in which you feel that your ability to experience your own worthiness, lovability, and value—is an illusion. The second experience—in which you are able to experience your value, worth, and lovability with or without another individual—is real.
Because we feel incomplete, we often reach out to others in an attempt to feel whole. The overpowering sense of connection we sometimes feel in a new relationship can be extremely intoxicating and feel fated, causing us to feel that this person must be our soulmate. I believe that there are people that we are irrevocably drawn to, and those people become our teachers and the vehicles for our soul's growth. But that doesn't necessarily make them a soulmate relationship or mean that we are destined to be with that person for life. Sometimes a relationship like this is for a limited purpose, and once that purpose has expired the relationship ends of its own accord.

Marriage to a soulmate partner is a wonderful thing, but it is not an end in itself. It is the beginning of a new journey of self-discovery that sometimes requires confronting painful places within us and healing old wounds. The soulmate partnership urges us to individuate rather than lose ourself in a bond with another. We learn to love ourselves in loving our partner. Soulmates aren't always marriage partners; often they are lifelong friends or parents and children. Ultimately though, the truest love is the pure experience of love itself, an experience that springs forth from our own heart in every circumstance of our life.

What is my true sign? A cusp question

A question often asked: "I am looking to understand the "CUSP" between a Virgo and a Libra? After reading [horoscopes for] both for several months, I am finding myself more inclinded to be or leaning towards Libra. Can you give me any insite that might point me towards my true sign?"

This individual was born at 29 degrees 17 minutes Virgo. In my experience, if you were born in the last four or five degrees of one sign, the qualities of the next sign begin bleeding through. He is moving away from the characteristics of Virgo, the previous sign, and his focus is more on the next which is Libra. Mercury in his chart is in Libra, so his thought process is filtered through the Libran love of beauty and harmony rather than the Virgo desire for details and safety and this adds to his sense of the Libra qualities.

None of us have one "true sign." The Sun sign is the biggest single piece of the chart but it is only one piece. Because the Sun represents our quest or mission, a placement in the last degrees of a sign shows that you are completing that mission and beginning a new one during this lifetime. That is not true for those born at the beginning degrees of a sign; once you have moved into the next sign there is no more bleeding through. Still, the rest of the chart adds a richly layered tapestry of other influences to complete the picture. This individual has Sagittarius rising, a Capricorn Moon, a Leo Mars, Jupiter in Cancer, Venus in Virgo. All very different influences that come together to create a unique individual.

Hillary Clinton, Saturn and Chiron

It was almost a year ago that I first profiled Hillary Clinton in these pages:
Hillary Clinton's birthchart shows a strong personality: She has four planets in intense Scorpio, including her Sun, Chiron, Venus and Mercury. Scorpio is an intensely emotional sign that imposes a passion on everything the individual does or feels. Scorpios are never superficial or dilletantes - they bury themselves in virtually everything they encounter. Scorpio is ruled by Pluto, the god of the underworld, death and transformation, and Scorpios have no fear of the underworld of the emotional realm. Hillary's Sun makes no aspect to any other planet, showing an individual who can find it difficult to make real connections with others. On the other hand, this can make it easier for one's light (Sun) to shine without the need for support from others.

Chiron (wounded healer) is conjunct Venus in Hillary's chart, linking the painful wounds of Chiron to the ability to relate to others and attract relationships that Venus represents. Chiron in tandem with Venus indicates an early psychic wounding in her sense of attractiveness and desirability and a tendency to continue to attract experiences that mirror this until the wound enters the conscious arena and can be healed. Certainly we can see this in her relationship with Bill Clinton as it has played out on the public stage. However, Jupiter in Hillary's chart is in Sagittarius, indicating a general faith and optimism (Sagittarius) that is the basis of her world view (Jupiter).

Mercury (communication) is retrograde in Hillary's chart and it is squared by Saturn, showing a difficulty (Saturn) in expressing herself (Mercury) in a way that is clear and understood by others. Mercury retrograde people tend to process information in a way that is more internalized than the general population, and often find themselves misunderstood. This has been a problem for her on the political stage, and requires a great deal of planning and preparation before making public speeches.

Hillary has a powerhouse conjunction of Mars, Pluto and Saturn all in Leo, and possibly (if the birthtime is close) in the third house of communication. This helps her to overcome the difficulties inherent in the retrograde Mercury, and harnesses the power of Mars (warrior energy), Pluto (transformation and personal power) and Saturn (discipline and hard work). And all in the sign of Leo, the sign that celebrates life and requires admiration in order to survive. Leo is the sign of nobility and royalty, and a concentration in this sign often brings about a desire to gain recognition for one's essential being - not, as with Capricorn, for one's achievements. It's no wonder Hillary has been an overachiever all of her life!

Mrs. Clinton has been going through her second Saturn Return over the past year. The Saturn Return occurs when Saturn returns to its place in our birthcharts, first at age 28-30 and second at age 57-60. Because Saturn represents discipline, achievement, limitations and disappointments, the effect of the second Saturn Return depends upon the nature of our own birthcharts and how well we handle the requirements of the material world. During the first Saturn Return we are forced to grow up: we face the challenges of leaving childhood behind and facing life in the "real world." By the time we reach the second Saturn Return we have become settled in that "real world," and faced the midlife crisis transits that force us to re-evaluate the paths that we have chosen. At the second Saturn Return we face our mortality and realize that life is short. Again, our management of this period of potential crisis depends on the rest of the chart but this can be a period of tremendous success, if the discipline and material focus of Saturn becomes the predominating exercise; or alternatively, it can be a time of health crisis and despair. Saturn requires that we buckle down, put our nose to the grindstone and face the music.

During Mrs. Clinton's first Saturn Return at age 28-30 (1975-1977) she married Our Bill and then joined the Rose Law Firm. Two years later she was First Lady of Arkansas. Mrs. Clinton's second Saturn Return began officially in October of 2006 but Saturn hit her Mars/Pluto conjunction back in June of 2006. The Mars/Pluto/Saturn conjunction is a tower of strength, particularly in Leo, although it is not without its challenges. This conjunction makes a square to Mrs. Clinton's retrograde Mercury, suggesting a deep-seated insecurity around her ability to communicate her ideas. This aspect of her chart keeps her from being overly politically astute, because unlike her husband, she is not tuned in to what the people want to hear. In some ways that gives her a greater integrity since she tends not to pander to the desires of others. Pluto and Saturn keep the ego of the Leo Mars in check, and Mrs. Clinton's success can only come if her focus remains on the work as she has done over the years. Success under a Saturn influence comes through relentless focus and determination, and Mrs. Clinton has these in spades.

The Mars/Pluto/Saturn conjunction in Mrs. Clinton's chart makes a square to her Chiron/Venus conjunction over the next year. Transiting Chiron is beginning a difficult series of Chiron transits; first in a square to her natal Chiron at the end of this month, then opposing her Mars/Pluto conjunction in April and then in July. August and December of this year sees Chiron retrograding back to a square of her natal Chiron which can indicate health problems or a painful episode of some kind. Because Chiron in her chart is conjunct Venus, planet of relationships, this painful episode is likely to involve her relationships. Her Chiron return in 1997 and 1998 marked the Lewinsky scandal which very publicly exposed fissures in her marriage.

Because this is such a big system involving so many planets, a transit to one planet affects all of them and creates a major shift for the individual. The next two years will be a powerful time of change for Mrs. Clinton as she balances the needs of her relationships (Venus/Chiron) with her own expression of power (Mars/Pluto/Saturn). Whether you love her or hate her, there's no mistaking the power of Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Mercury turns retrograde tomorrow night.

Although for me it won't make much difference, I'm sort of getting used to the kind of technological craziness I've been experiencing lately with the square of Jupiter to Uranus and evidently I'm not alone. Although this aspect made its exact hit back in January, the effects are still with us and will continue for another week or so.

Mercury is stationary now preparing to retrograde late tomorrow night, and communication and equipment difficulties are likely to increase. Recent studies have refuted the Mercury Retrograde phenomenon, but just ask my assistant who doesn't believe in astrology about Mercury Retrograde and she will roll her eyes and say "oh no, not again."

In my experience, Mercury Retrograde is more about personal communication than actual equipment malfunction, although when there is a malfunction it is likely to be from user error. We don't read the instructions, or we forgot to service the photocopier. Or we don't listen to each other: I say I'll meet someone at the office, she's waiting for me at the house.

During Mercury retrograde periods we have a clear view in hindsight, making this a good time to rethink our priorities, re-establish old friendships. Since it's Valentine's Day, renew your commitment to your Valentine if you have one, and to yourself if you don't. Linear thinking is temporarily suspended; take a different route!

What I learned from the Skeptics Challenge

For the past few years I have written to anyone who wrote a post or an article debunking astrology offering to do a free reading for them so that they can try it for themselves before making a judgement on a subject they knew little about. I received no response from any of these people. Last summer someone undergoing a painful experience wrote to me - he was skeptical of astrology but open to hear what I had to say, and we had a very meaningful exchange that was helpful for him and the process he was going through.

Then Paul came along, a dyed-in-the-wool skeptic, in response to my post quoting Richard Tarnas that skepticism without magic is an empty prison. Paul responded to the Skeptics Challenge and I sent him a short reading of a few of the major points in his chart, requesting that he reply to my email and let me know what he thought of it. He did not reply to that email, so I sent a second email, to which I also received no reply. However, a reply to his comment referred to his blog so I went there to take a look and found there a challenge to me for a scientific study of astrology. I thought it peculiar that he didn't contact me directly about this challenge but instead posted it on his blog with no real way for me to find it except for a link in a post. You'll find more details about what happened here along with the longest comment thread ever seen on this site.

My goal for the Skeptics Challenge was that in showing these individuals what a real astrology reading can do, they would see that Astrology Works. But I failed to understand the skeptic mind, which evidently is looking for facts and scientific proof that astrology is a reliable indicator of predictable facts rather than an experience that life is magic.

I never did find out from Paul specific feedback about how accurate the reading was accurate for him; instead his response was that it could be accurate for anyone. He said generally that some of it was accurate and some less accurate, but I never learned specifically how relevant the reading was. It's true that in a mini reading, which covers the main themes of a chart (generally in answer to a specific question), there are only so many common themes that apply, such as a conflict between intimacy and autonomy, responsibility and freedom.

Astrology is not a provable science - it isn't astronomically correct, it doesn't even have accepted constructs upon which all astrologers agree. We know it works because we experience it, but we can't prove it. The interesting thing for me about Paul, having done his chart (which I would normally not divulge but because he posted it on his blog for the world to see I think it's fair game) is the conflict between an extreme sensitivity as shown by a conjunction of Saturn to Chiron, which engenders a continual need to face one's own inner painful experiences (Saturn) in order to grow and evolve (Chiron) in the very sensitive sign of Pisces which is square to a conjunction of Neptune on the ascendant which squares his Aquarian Sun. The Sun, Mercury and Venus are all in logical Aquarius, so there is a dichotomy here between his extreme sensitivity (Saturn/Chiron in Pisces square Neptune along with Neptune square to the Sun) and his ability to create logical rationalizations (Sun/Mercury in Aquarius). Often this kind of configuration indicates a split in the personality and the logical mind part takes over as a protective mechanism. I wonder if Paul has migraine headaches, something often indicated by a conflict between Aquarius planets and a more sensitive system as the rational mind attempts to quash the emotions.

To summarize what I learned from the Skeptics Challenge is this: I no longer have any desire to prove that astrology works, and I understand that for the skeptic the proof would not be experiential, it would come through a completely objective and factual methodology. This kind of proof will never be possible with astrology, and that is part of its magic. And that is enough for me.

Valentine's Day Love Triangle

Thanks to Dharmaruci for this link to an article describing the tight Yod aspect between Venus, Mars and Saturn that is moving into formation now and will be strong on Valentine's Day. A Yod aspect involves two planets in sextile that are each 150 degress (quincunx) from the apex planet. The sextile is an exciting and harmonious aspect and the quincunx an irritating and somewhat stressful aspect, so the combination of the two together typically results in a process that is more dynamic than either the sextile or the quincunx can be on their own. Sextiles generate excitement but typically don't effect change, and the quincunx is challenging with no way to resolve the stress.
From the article:
The two planets dancing together in this Valentine sextile are Venus and Mars. Venus is in exaltation in Pisces, full of compassion, love, acceptance, with a deep love for both humanity and the Creator. There is the ability for selfless service, especially towards those suffering in the world. It is harmonizing spirit and form. But it can also loose the sense of its own identity especially if illusions or psychic influences overtake sensibilities.

Mars is also in exaltation in Capricorn with the strength to make commitments, stay the course, and ultimately may desire to penetrate and set free anything that inhibits, restrains or represses inner freedom. But it can also be extremely controlling, moralistic and inhibited, often through traditional religious conditioning.

If no cooperative effort is made between this Mars and Venus, the low side of the energies is our love being chained and hidden as we are psychically controlled by government or religious authorities and conditioning. But with just a little effort, these two planetary energies use the strength of a Capricorn Mars to break through any limitations and restrictions that would keep the world in suffering and support the service of this most loving Venus in bringing peace, harmony and beauty to the world.

So where does Saturn in Leo fit into this? Generally speaking, Saturn, detriment in Leo, may have lost sight of the father or Father. So although the child is born, which is a very creative act, the second half of the creation is aborted through what is often the absence of a real parent/child relationship, and so an essential element of self identity is also lost. There is then the temporary barrier between the person and his creative flow. Shadows are pushed down, self-love is largely absent and life has lost its spontaneity. Leo’s natural ability to affirm life is stifled. Venus inconjunct Saturn in this state creates an extreme loss of self worth and Mars inconjunct Saturn can compensate through cruelty.

But Saturn is also our teacher and helps us lay a strong foundation to rebuild on. So there can be an equal seriousness towards affirming life. With Venus in Pisces inconjunct this Saturn in Leo, the tension is released with the adjustment that lets the love flow without feeling insignificant, rising above the psychic currents and building a foundation of strength and worthiness, the heart unlocked to the power of life, creating life, and seeing the beauty in all things.

Mars in Capricorn inconjunct Saturn is the ability to know through experience driven by one’s will that the power and control is internal. In the more feminine orientation of Capricorn, looking inward shows that he has not lost his creativity and no longer needs to prove himself to understand success.

Mars in Capricorn can protect the inherent desires of tradition and religious backgrounds, which can provide a safe haven for life’s creativity to flow, without losing the love we can have for all humankind. It can be surmounting obstacles through spiritual love. And so, Saturn can join the Great Dance with Mars and Venus, fully participating in life and creativity.

UFO sighting in the UK

There seems to be a rash of UFO sightings over the past couple of months (Jupiter/Uranus anyone??) but this is a big one:
PEOPLE screamed and cars came to a halt when dozens of mysterious lights hovered thousands of feet above Archway.

The "squadron" of flying orange objects left passers-by staring skyward in disbelief at around 5.30pm last Thursday. Police received four calls within a matter of minutes.
...

WHILE no one is in any doubt something happened in the sky above Archway last Thursday, experts are at odds over what caused the spooky sight.

The truth is out there - somewhere - and my search started with the account of eyewitness, James Zafar.

He said: "When I called 999 there was a big silence and then he came back on the phone and said we've tracked it by radar. Then he said, 'you are real really lucky, you've just seen a meteor or shooting star.'

"They definitely mentioned the radar and that leads me to think they know all about this."

But police would only confirm that they received a number of calls about the lights and that there was reference to radar and a meteor on their records. They could not say where this information came from.
Of course there was a skeptic who came up with this explanation:
[A]stronomer and self proclaimed "UFO sceptic" Ian Ridpath also dismissed any astronomical or climatic explanations.

He believes the phenomenon was caused by "sky lanterns" or "UFO balloons" - one-off miniature hot air balloons that can be ordered online for use at parties.

Mr Ridpath said: "These things are always being reported. This very probably is the most likely explanation. What surprises me is that someone hasn't come along and said this is what they are." ...

But eyewitness Mr Zafar said: "They moved and then they stopped and then they moved again. They were under control. I totally disagree. I think someone is trying to dismiss the story."

And Mr Cull added: "I don't buy the balloon thing. When I first saw it, it was stationary and then it was moving above the hospital and then it moved towards the south."

For eyewitnesses of Thursday's extraordinary events at least, it seems the truth is still out there.

Anna Nicole Smith: Another case of Chiron/Uranus/Pluto

Plenty is being said right now about the death of Anna Nicole Smith, and I'm not going to add to the frenzy of media coverage and obsession over this sad creature's life and death. For me the pertinent item of issue is that she is another of the Uranus/Pluto generation with Chiron opposed to both planets that is in serious trouble.

I don't want all of you who were born between 1962 and 1968 to panic, but this is a challenging dynamic that is coming to a head now with transiting Uranus in Pisces and Pluto in Sagittarius squaring Uranus and Pluto in various degrees of Virgo. There is potential here for amazing transformation and evolution, but for those who run from the psychic distress that Chiron opposite Uranus and Pluto can cause rather than face and integrate this distress into their conscious awareness, the Universe will provide some additional inducement for that to take place.

Chart from Vegas Attractions, click to enlarge. Anna Nicole Smith had a square from her Sagittarius Sun to Jupiter, suggesting an overblown sense of confidence and reckless approach to life. The Uranus/Pluto conjunction in her chart made a trine to her Capricorn Mars which is a strong signature for success in any endeavor: Capricorn is disciplined and works hard to achieve success and Mars provides the drive and energy, Uranus adds a touch of brilliance and innovative thinking, and Pluto the power to make things happen. A trine of Mars and Pluto links the will of the individual self (Mars) to the will of the higher self (Pluto), facilitating one's ability to manifest easily. Whatever you think about Ms. Smith, there is no question that she took what she had and manifested her dreams.

Still, the Pluto/Chiron/Uranus dynamic is a difficult one that challenges us to continually face and transmute our demons, and this can either make or break us. Escaping the pain through drugs as Ms. Smith attempted to do will not eliminate the problem; it requires courage and strength and a sense of faith in what is on the other side of the process. Over the past two years, transiting Pluto had been in a difficult aspect (T-square) to the Pluto/Chiron/Uranus combination, forcing this confrontation and likely creating a great deal of psychic pain. Pluto isn't cruel or evil - in my experience it acts as the will of our higher selves and removes from our path whatever is no longer serving us. Pluto transits require great faith because we often experience deep and heavy losses, although this doesn't always occur. If we let go where needed, Pluto bestows a greater empowerment and balance within ourselves but the punishment for not complying with the process can be very difficult.

At the time of her death, Ms. Smith's progressed Moon (emotions) was conjunct Saturn in her chart (restriction, isolation), suggesting that her depression became extremely acute during this period. It's a very sad ending to a life that had brilliant potential, and a reminder to the rest of us that doing our evolutionary work offers great rewards and should not be put off.

Good and Evil

Robert Wilkinson has a lovely post today on Good and Evil in the birthchart:
Our birth charts show us what cycles we've set into motion, and what we're dealing with. All of us are learning to deal with the results of prior karmas left over from other times, past chapters of our life, as well as other lives, if you accept the concept that we are Eternal Consciousnesses who occasionally dip back into life in physical form here on Earth.

Without getting into a discussion of what constitutes "evil" or how it is manifest, I have known people who could easily be perceived as "evil" because of the deeds they do to others. In my own experience, I believe there is no truth, no honor, no integrity, and no goodwill in what we call evil. Where these are absent, there the seeds of "evil" are permitted to grow. However, I believe that for all of us, our Eternal nature is essentially good. I also believe our reality is designed for the "best" to come forth, if we only do our part. Each absolutely determines their own karmic rewards and punishments, and even something apparently "bad" today may serve to bring forth the skill or insight you need tomorrow.

That does not excuse the abusers, because we're not supposed to be doing things that generate forms of suffering. It creates a stink in the world, and only contributes to future suffering on the part of the perpetrator. Someone who persists in behaviors that hurt others only destroys themselves through self-generated effects guaranteed to lead to suffering. All hurtful behaviors are a product of fear-based ignorance. I believe people can fall into fear-based delusions, but they can also come out of them if only they release the need to control ourcomes resulting from fear-based delusions.

Those who persistently seek to hurt others, or use separateness to further selfishness and lies are ultimately living a delusion. That part of the suffering will end for us when they leave the body. However, they will take their suffering with them to be resolved on other levels entirely. Until they leave the body, though, I am reminded that "one fool can keep a thousand wise men very busy" indeed.

I have tremendous compassion for people put through difficulty by seemingly evil people using all kinds of nasty attacks and machinations. Eventually, though, one's need to stay personally involved with the mischiefmaker ends, and they are left with their own ugliness while you are living a life freed from such a one. What is important is to use the time and karma you must stay involved with "evil" people to lift your life into the light.

The evil ones will eventually come to realize the error of their ways, or be removed from this fragile Earth to live out their violent and selfish karma in another bandwidth of reality. Even the Earth can only endure so much pollution (mental and emotional as well!) before its own higher karma dictates it go through its changes, whether we like them or not. Such is the nature of nature whose cycles are unerring.

All that said, I also know that as you cultivate even the least of what is good, true, and beautiful, you further those in your life, and come to know the richness of all the textures of these. So I suppose my belief is that we're all good, some personalities are severely dysfunctional to the point of being dangerous to others, and that regardless of what seems to be, eventually we will use up our karma with those who are hurtful and can then have relationships that truly bring us joy and fulfillment, leaving the nasties behind, not with hatred or anger, but compassionate indifference.

The Case of the Astronaut: Narcissism in the Birthchart

Any time someone does something completely bizarre and out of character, it's always makes me want to look at their astrological chart. Often we have subconscious elements that we are able to keep in the "basement" of our psyche until one day something begins to stir the pot and those buried parts of ourselves make themselves known. This periods are often associated with planetary cycles called transits.

Lisa Nowak was selected to be an astronaut back in 1996 and ten years later went into space on a journey to the international space station where she was the mission flight engineer. Married since 1988, she has three children but separated from her husband in January of 2007. This week she was arrested for attempted murder and kidnapping of a suspected rival for a man whom she described as being "more than a working relationship but less than a romantic relationship."

Lisa Nowak has a complicated astrological chart. Her Sun is in the fixed sign of Taurus that craves stability and harmony, and it is in a challenging relationship (square) to Saturn, the planet of isolation, restriction and limitation. With Saturn in square to the Sun, which represents the essential Self, there is often a lack of self-esteem and a feeling of abandonment and loneliness. This system is exacerbated by another challenging aspect between Neptune and the Sun. Neptune tends to dissolve material reality and induce us to seek experiences that go beyond the material world, but in a challenging aspect (particularly with the Sun) there is a dissolving of our sense of Self and a tendency towards escapism and self-deception.

In this case Saturn and Neptune are both square to the Sun, applying pressure to Lisa to develop a firm sense of her own identity while creating blocks in her ability to do so. Saturn and Neptune work against each other in the best of circumstances: Saturn urges us to develop strength and practicality by frustrating our desires and placing roadblocks in our way that force us to work harder to achieve our goals, while Neptune encourages us to go beyond the dry logic of materialism and connect to the world of spirit by opening our eyes to worlds beyond in a way that often makes it difficult for us to find our footing.

The planet Mars in Lisa's chart falls in Leo and squares the Sun and Neptune and opposite Saturn, forming a Grand Cross in fixed signs. The addition of Mars heightens the intensity of her rage (Mars) and shows a desperation to have her needs met (Mars opposite Saturn and square Neptune). The Grand Cross is a very difficult planetary combination but one that when integrated shows a powerful personality with strength and spirit. Often, however, that power comes at a great price and with a lot of hard work on oneself. Without that work, the personality can begin to splinter as these four opposing forces fail to bridge the gap between them.

Lisa's chart also shows a Grand Trine in Fire planets: Venus in Aries, Mars in Leo and the Moon in Sagittarius. The trine is a harmonious aspect, which many people define as "good" because the energy of the planets flow together, and the Grand Trine multiplies the ease of the trine creating a complacency and self-satisfaction. While difficult aspects like the T-square create discomfort in the individual, they provide strong motivation for change and evolution and build strength of character that helps us to get through difficult times. Fire is the element that while inspirational and creative also tends to be self-motivated and egoistic, and the Grand Trine in fire shows someone who is bold and has tremendous faith in herself and a lack of fear. Bil Tierney writes of the fire Grand Trine:
"the individual's strong and unshakeable belief in himself does allow him to succeed in his endeavors more often than not. ... He may, however, unconsciously be very demanding of attention, loyalty and even service from others while remaining emotionally unaffected by or even oblivious to their personal needs."
If an individual with this combination of a challenged sense of Self (the Sun/Saturn/Neptune T-square) with the egoistic focus of the fire Grand Trine does not work diligently to develop a healthy ego, a personality disorder is apt to follow. James Masterson, a noted expert in personality disorders, writes (as quoted in Wikipedia):
The lack of this inner development is the key to borderline problems, which occur when a young child fails to separate her own self-image from that of her mother. This happens roughly between the ages of two and three, often because of a parent’s own emotional problems. A mother’s encouragement of a child’s self-assertion is vital. When the mother suffers from low self-esteem, she has difficulty encouraging her child’s emerging self. The child experiences this absence as a loss of self, creating feelings of abandonment that lead to depression. To deal with the depression, the child gives up efforts to support her emerging self. Instead, she relies on her mother’s approval to maintain the esteem of a "false self."

The lack of self-esteem is shown in the birthchart by Saturn square to the Sun, the "false self" is shown by Neptune square to the Sun. Pathological narcissism arises when the false self is derived entirely from "audience feedback." Dr. Sam Vaknin writes:
Narcissists are obsessed by delusions of fantastic grandeur and superiority. As a result they are very competitive. They are strongly compelled - where others are merely motivated. They are driven, relentless, tireless, and ruthless. They often make it to the top. But even when they do not - they strive and fight and learn and climb and create and think and devise and design and conspire.
A Maryland psychiatrist interviewed by the Baltimore Sun describes Lisa Nowak's behavior as suggestive of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. "When a narcissist's achievement or conquest is thwarted, he or she can fall into a rage, Vaeth said. 'When the right buttons are pushed, they explode.'"

Lisa was going through a number of planetary cycles that would have been pushing these buttons. Since last summer Saturn was making a number of passes over the difficult T-square involving her Sun, Saturn in her chart and Neptune. Transits of Saturn create pressure on us for change, and often are extremely stressfully personally and financially. In her case, this event would have activated her own sense of despair (Sun/Saturn) and delusion (Sun/Neptune). To make matters even more difficult for her, transiting Neptune (which is opposite Saturn in the sky) also began a pass over these sensitive points last fall which added more confusion and a dissolving of her tenuous hold on reality.

The tipping point came this week when the veneer that held Lisa Nowak's fragile personality together came apart. Hopefully this will be the event that motivates Lisa to seek the help she needs to be able to integrate her personality and realize the tremendous potential that lies hidden in her birthchart.

Science and Multidimensional Reality

From Universe Today:
One of the great outstanding questions in science is known as the “theory of everything”. What underlying laws of physics explain the forces we see in nature? Are gravity and electromagnetism the same force? One popular theory is known as string theory, and proposes that everything in the Universe is made up of tiny, vibrating strings.

String theory’s mathematics work best when you invoke extra dimensions, beyond the 3 (plus time) that we can detect. Mathematicians propose that these extra dimensions are there, they’re just really small, and curled up inside the dimensions we can detect.
Many of us are beginning to perceive these extra dimensions, particularly those with strong Chiron influences in their charts. Chiron is the bridge between the personal planets (up to Saturn) and the transpersonal (Uranus through Pluto), and seems to have a role in opening our psyche to multidimensional awareness, particularly when working in concert with Neptune. But I never thought that there was scientific backing for this.

Here's the original article

Generation Next: The Saturn/Uranus influence

A column by David Brooks the other day intrigued me when he wrote about students he taught at Duke University last fall, calling them "Children of Polarization":
Today’s college students, remember, were born around 1987. They were 2 or 3 when the Berlin Wall fell. They have come into political consciousness amid impeachment, jihad, polarization and Iraq. Many of them seem to have reacted to these hothouse clashes not by becoming embroiled in the zealotry but by quietly drifting away from that whole political mode.

::snip::

For many students, the main axis of their politics is not between left and right but between idealism and realism. They have developed a suspicion of sweepingly idealistic political ventures, and are now a fascinating mixture of youthful hopefulness and antiutopian modesty.
This struck me as being a signature of an outer planet combination, and sure enough I found that in 1987 when these kids were born, Saturn and Uranus were conjunct in Sagittarius, linking the restriction and limitation of Saturn with the rebellious idealism of Uranus. The suspicion (Saturn) of sweeping idealism (Uranus) and the combination of hopefulness (Uranus) and modesty (Saturn) express the collision of these two planets which are very different in nature. Saturn seeks to build form and establish firm structures in society; it sets rules and boundaries and frowns on rebellion. Uranus, on the other hand, seeks to destroy the status quo - to break down barries and build a new order.

Brooks goes on to say, "If my Duke students are representative, then the U.S. is about to see a generation that is practical, anti-ideological, modest and centrist (maybe to a fault)." It sounds as though the hard line of Saturn in these Duke students has put a clamp on the recklessness individualism of Uranus, but it is will be just as easy for the Uranian influence to liberate the Saturn tendency to become too stuck in routine and rules. The conjunction fuses these two planets so they work together, unlike in the square between Saturn and Uranus in the charts of many baby boomers, creating the generation that flip-flopped between the idealism of the 1960s (Uranus) to the Yuppie lifestyle of making money and having showy things (Saturn) of the 1980s.

This group of young people born in 1987 also has an exact opposition from Chiron to the Saturn/Uranus conjunction. The opposition from Chiron to Saturn can be a painful one depending on the rest of the chart; Saturn tends to force a confrontation to generate the healing crisis of Chiron. The interaction of Chiron with Uranus is similarly difficult and tends to overload the nervous system.

The Uranus influence bestows a love of and affinity for technology; this is the first generation to grow up on the computer and replace face to face encounters with text messaging and MySpace. This generation has been termed Generation Next, and is not afraid to flout authority in true Uranian fashion. They wear tattoos, piercings, and overwhelmingly do not affiliate with any major religion. In the true spirit of Uranus, the planet of justice and social fairness, they overwhelmingly accept homosexuality and immigration and are generally socially liberal. At least now - as they age we are just as likely to see the Saturn influence take over as these young rebels begin to age.

Renaissance Astrological Magic

Our friend Ursi once again delights and amazes with this beautiful article on Renaissance astrology and magic. Ursi tells us that for Renaissance astrologers, the planets were the link between the mundane life on earth and the magical realm of the angelic hierarchies.
For the Renaissance philosopher magic was a spiritual science which, like the Cosmos itself, was arranged in a triple hierarchy: material, celestial and divine.

Natural magic is reliant on the elements and occult properties of material things and required a knowledge of natural philosophy. Celestial magic relies on the spiritual connections and causality imposed by the Zodiacal powers and required a knowledge of mathematics (for calculation) and astrology.

Divine magic, says Agrippa, requires a knowledge of theology, for without this knowledge one, "...cannot understand the rationality of magic." Three Books of Occult Philosophy Bk.I, Chap. 2 (Tyson ed.) page 6. As the divine and ideal world was the basis of the existence and form of the Universe, so knowledge of the spiritual is the basis of magic.

Celestial magic or magical astrology thus concerns itself with the middle world, that of the Zodiacal powers, which are a universal archetype of Reality and control the generation and corruption of all things in the material realm.

Ryan and Griffin O'Neal

Ryan O'Neal was arrested for assaulting his son Griffin this week, although Ryan claimed he was defending himself from an attack with a fireplace poker. Growing up with Ryan O'Neal can't have been easy; all of his children have suffered from drug addiction and other problems. Even young Redmond, child of a relatively stable relationship between Ryan and Farrah Fawcett, was a heroin addict in his early teens. Ryan is known for his explosive temper; he once hit Griffin so hard he knocked his teeth out, and his daughter Tatum wrote a tell-all book telling of his abusive cruelty to her. This episode has brought the whole O'Neal family saga into the public view, and it's a sad one.

I took a look at the birthchart of both Ryan and Griffin O'Neal, but it's Griffin's chart that is really the most interesting. Click chart to enlarge. Griffin was born in 1964, a time of tremendous social upheaval and cultural change. Uranus (the planet of radical change) was conjunct Pluto (the planet of transformation), and the world was experiencing cultural revolutions on a variety of fronts: the civil rights movement, the feminist movement, the antiwar movement, student rebellions. Those individuals born during this period (between 1962 and 1968 or so) carry this archetype within them; they are the first generation born after the baby boomers and they grew up in the chaos of that period of tremendous change.

Griffin has a Scorpio Sun, showing an emotionally intense nature. Mars (illustrating how he expresses his aggression and asserts himself) in his chart is in Leo, suggesting that he expresses his anger (Mars) in a dramatic (Leo) way. Mars in Leo is not content to have a private argument, it needs to be made public since Leo generally thrives on an audience. This expressive and showy Mars is in a challenging aspect with Jupiter in his chart, indicating an expanded (Jupiter) sense of defensiveness (Mars) and a tendency to go to extremes. To complicate matters more, Saturn in Griffin's chart (imposing restriction and limitations) is also challenging his Mars. This is a placement that often shows a strict father (Saturn) who places oppressive limitations (Mars) on the individual. The combination of these three planets often shows an individual whose temper (Mars) is alternatively repressed and stimulated, leading to a situation that is often out of control.

This whole system in Griffin's chart makes a difficult aspect to a conjunction of Jupiter (self-righteousness) and Uranus (eccentricity and instability) in Ryan O'Neal's chart, showing an extremely volatile relationship between them and also indicating that Ryan has a tendency to inflame Griffin's already irritable nature. These planets in both men's charts have been affected by a difficult transit of Saturn to all of these sensitive points over the past six months and I'm sure trouble has been brewing for some time.

In addition, like every one in his age group, Griffin is going through the planetary cycle called the Uranus Opposition, where Uranus in the sky is opposite Uranus in the birthchart. This is one of the "midlife crisis" events, when we look at our lives and feel that we must break free. In Griffin's chart the conjunction of Uranus and Pluto is opposed by Chiron, the wounded healer. Chiron in aspect to Uranus often shows an individual who may experience an overabundance of electromagnetic energy which is often extremely uncomfortable psychically although this placement is very commonly found in the charts of healers. Chiron in aspect to Pluto indicates a serious nature and someone who is intimately in contact with the darker side (Pluto) of life. This is generally a person who goes through periods of endings and transformation throughout his life. So the Uranus opposition is affecting Griffin and others with the same configuration in a much more intense way than it would for most of us.

Often in a family it is the most sensitive of the children that reflect the dysfunction of the family and therefore become the focal point. In the O'Neal drama, that person is most likely Griffin O'Neal.

The Skeptics Challenge: Paul responds

In the year or so that I've offered the Skeptics Challenge, Paul is just the second person to participate. He sent me his birth date and time and I sent him a short reading which he has reproduced on his site here. He conducted a "scientific" experiment where he took the two most general statements that were made in the reading and conducted a poll to see how many people these statements applied to. The statements were these:

"You have a far-reaching vision that is fair and just and a strong idealistic sense of justice and freedom" (78% accurate for 33 people) [This statement was taken out of context, the entire concept was this: "There is a far-reaching vision that is fair and just and a strong idealistic sense of justice and freedom. Aquarius is the revolutionary and the inventor - there is an affinity for the unusual and the path not traveled."

"you seek to be nurtured in a way that preserves your autonomy and ability to express your own needs" (68% accurate for 32 people) [again, taken out of context - here is the complete concept: "The yearning for freedom is a theme in your chart - your Moon falls in Aries, showing that you seek to be nurtured (Moon) in a way that preserves your autonomy and ability to express your own needs (Aries). . . . and in Aries there is a need for self-preservation and adventure. This is not a placement that demonstrates a great deal of compassion or empathy, that is not how you are wired."

Paul concluded that this means that the reading contained only general statements that could apply to anyone and the astrological symbolism was "bunk." The two statements above represent psychological conflicts that are certainly common to many people, and I think most people like to think that they have a strong sense of justice and freedom. However, these were just two of the many things I wrote (although I did keep the reading short because it was after all a mini-reading).

Paul did not test these statements as well, which were more specific to him:

"Mercury in Aquarius is logical and innovative - a brilliant thinker who often seems to download new ideas rather than learning through conventional means. "

"There is a desire for a relationship that may defy convention - perhaps a long-distance relationship or one where each partner has a great deal of freedom. "

"You are actually quite sensitive but that it is difficult for you to integrate that sensitivity into your personality in a way that doesn't feel vulnerable or painful. You are far more comfortable with the reason and logic of your Aquarian nature than that vulnerability and it is not uncommon for us to submerge aspects of our personality that give us discomfort."

"- part of you craves stability and material wealth (Taurus) and part of you resists becoming enmeshed in convention (Aquarius). "

If all of his polltakers were the same age as Paul they may have all been going through the cycles below, which are generational in nature and therefore strike everyone in the same age group at the same time:

[Regarding the Uranus Opposition cycle that Paul is going through} Everyone experiences this process differently - for those of us who resist change and take the safe path, the Uranus Opposition can be very destabilizing as we become driven by a deep restlessness and urge for something different. Marriages can break up under this transit, we become frustrated by our jobs as Uranus urges us to break out of routines and live a more authentic life. This began for you in April (you would have started feeling it in early March) and continued through August of last year.

[Regarding the Neptune square cycle] "We can become confused and feel that our ship has lost its rudder as Neptune urges us to look within and find a true experience of the divine."

So Paul - how about a true scientific experiment? Let's try a new poll and add the other statements from the reading along with the complete concepts of the two that you used in your survey instead of just pulling out the most general statements.

And thank you for playing the Skeptics Challenge!

Trusting the voice within

Recently I've been doing more typed readings. Typically I prefer telephone readings because they're more interactive, but the typed readings are powerful because there's no instant feedback, no assurance that I'm on the right path. Just me and the computer and the birthchart, and the voice in my head that directs me which I have to trust completely.

When I first began learning about astrology I did "readings" for friends, telling them about their charts and connecting the astrology to what I knew about their personality. When I started doing readings for the public it was terrifying since I knew nothing about them; I had to jump right into the birthchart and let it reveal itself. This was a vivid lesson in the power of astrology - knowing nothing about the individual before me, the inner workings of their personality were revealed.

Ten years ago the internet brought clients to me from other parts of the country and I started doing phone readings which took the session a step deeper. Now there was no one to see, no way to gauge whether I was "on target" or not. Just me and the birthchart, and the client. The typed reading takes this a step even further and requires me to have faith in the process and start typing, requesting and trusting that what comes out will be the perfect message for the client at that time. Sometimes the immediate response is not what I would hope for; occasionally a client is unhappy at what is written and would have preferred different information. But it's rare that such an event occurs that the client doesn't write me back later and let me know that the information turned out to be correct after all.

There is a well-known study, which I was unable to find for this post, which debunks astrology because in this study astrologers describe the personalities of their clients differently than the clients describe themselves. To me this merely demonstrates the fact that the astrological symbolism of the birthchart describes the underlying personality dynamics that often operate at a subconscious level. Often a client will deny these subconscious dynamics at first, but later realize that in fact they were correct. We spend most of our lives trying to suppress some of our more uncomfortable inner conflicts and it may take a while to bring them into the light of day. But then the experience is similar to having watched a play with the curtain closed: suddenly the curtain opens and you can observe and identify the players within and learn to become a better integrated individual.

After nearly 30 years, I no longer look to the client for affirmation that I'm "on target," but trust the voice within that interprets the astrological symbolism that dances before me. It's such a privilege to be able to do this work, and I am so grateful.

View of the Comet from Down Under

Diana shares her experience of Comet McNaught:

My first sighting of comet McNaught was with a group of people, all gazing expectantly into the darkening twilight, and it was a little girl who caught first glimpse. And as our eyes focused on the fuzzy bit of brightness, and its awe-inspiring tail...that same little girl squealed with delight, 'it's red! it's red!' Some of the adults shook their heads thinking this was an over-active imagination, but I recalled looking through a telescope with my own kids when they were small, and the astronomer who was assisting us, asked the boys what colours they could see...and they could see many colours in some constellations. The astronomer explained to me that children's eyes see colour more vividly than we do, I think we lose that capacity around age twelve.

Another member of that family present on that first night, was a 92yr old woman, very frail, and poor of eye sight. We weren't sure she would be able to see anything, but her family wanted to share the experience with her. For a few minutes she couldn't see it and then there was a sudden twinkling, which we all could see, and the old woman called out, 'I can see it, it's sparkling!'. Now that old woman is not someone I would describe as 'optimistic' in fact she is very gloomy and longing for death...but that night, after seeing the comet, she said, 'I feel....[and she struggled for the word]...content.'

I've seen the comet since that night. Sat and stared at it in absolute wonder. And I've got to say, I'm not the most optimistic person myself, but there is something about comet McNaught...I saw Halley's comet and it just isn't the same. Whether it's the tail, which is soooo magnificent, I don't know. But in my heart, I can't believe that the appearance of this comet only foretells death and destruction.

Saturn/Neptune and Bird Flu - the panic arrives on schedule

I have to admit I was skeptical when astrologers predicted that the opposition of Saturn and Neptune would bring with it a deadly flu pandemic. The planets rarely act as they are expected to perform, and this was too easy a connection to make. Phil Brown looked past the obvious when he wrote back in February:
While many claim that the Saturn-Neptune opposition is “it,” this is only part of the developing picture. I believe that mundane Saturn-Neptune configurations can often symbolize trance states which sweep through culture.
Is the Saturn/Neptune effect the bird flu itself, or the panic that results in a fugue state where the mass consciousness takes over? Saturn and Neptune are moving closer to their opposition point at the end of February and suddenly bird flu is in the news again. The first death from bird flu in humans just occurred in Nigeria, and an outbreak in birds in the UK resulted in the killing of thousands of turkeys (humans are not expected to be endangered). Japan just announced an outbreak of bird flu as well. As if there wasn't enough other news to generate fear, panic on this issue is increasingly peddled in the world press.

Unfortunately, this may result in the "boy who cried wolf" syndrome and if a dangerous situation truly does erupt the rest of us won't believe it.

February Skywatch and planetary news this week

After four days of wrangling with the web hosts who had no idea why I couldn't upload to my site, the February skywatch article is finally posted!! I'm now including a comprehensive list of the major planetary aspects and events as well. Here's an excerpt for this week:
The major aspects for February are the first phase of the conflict between Jupiter and Uranus in the square which occurred in January but will remain in effect through the end of the month, and the approaching second phase of the opposition between Saturn and Neptune. The Jupiter/Uranus combination can be potentially explosive - because this is a challenging aspect (the square), we tend to see the more negative manifestation of both planets. In Jupiter we see a reckless overconfidence and tendency towards self-righteousness, and Uranus is similarly reckless with a desire for change for its own sake and at any cost. This event has brought with it problems with communication and equipment similar to a Mercury retrograde period, and this could be exacerbated when Mercury turns retrograde on the 13th of February.

The opposition between Saturn and Neptune is a long range cycle that began last August and will conclude next summer, and we are entering the second phase now as we move towards the second opposition at the end of the month. Saturn lives in the material world and urges us to build on terra firma, while Neptune lives in the spiritual realm and calls us with a siren song to abandon terra firma for the abode of the divine. This opposition creates a tension between the material world and the spiritual that can be somewhat destabilizing, particularly for those of us with planets in the fixed signs of Leo, Aquarius, Scorpio and Taurus.

Mercury enters Pisces on February 2, leaving the dry brilliance of Aquarius for the watery emotional realm of Pisces, where intuition and empathy (Pisces) are the conduit for information (Mercury) rather than the ideas and concepts of Aquarius. From the first day of February Mars (action and drive) is approaching a harmonious aspect (sextile) to Uranus (innovation and change), a creative combination that provides inspiration and energy to take productive action and implement new ideas. This partnership culminates on February 3 in the waning shadow of the Leo Full Moon, an energetic event in itself, and then Venus conjuncts Uranus on the 7th, bringing us into contact with new and unusual (Uranus) people (Venus) and encourages us to bring air and space as well as a sense of fairness (Uranus) into our relationships with others. This aspect is followed on the 9th by a square of expansive Jupiter to Venus, an aspect which can encourage overindulgence and a tendency to expect too much from our loved ones. Still, there is lots of positive energy available now even though at this point we have entered the shadow of the retrograde period and are still under the chaotic influence of Jupiter/Uranus.

Hawks and Me

For the past year or so I have been followed by hawks. A hawk will fly right in front of me when I'm sitting on the porch, one will circle my car out on the highway. Often as I'm driving a hawk will swoop in front of me while I'm driving, causing me to watch its descent and path through the woods. Two days ago a hawk flew right over my car and landed on the side of the road where it stood next to me like a sentry. The day before that I was out in the woods and a hawk circled overhead squawking at me. Today while I was driving another hawk circled low over my car.

I know I have a tendency to look for meaning everywhere, and sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. But still, these hawk events seem to be beyond coincidence. I asked Rich if hawks were following him and if he had these experiences, and he said "Only when I'm with you." I can't help but feel that the hawks have something to say, but I'm not getting it. Perhaps the hawk is now my totem, but I have no idea what to do with that. I think in astrology symbols, not totems!

I did find this cool site that says about hawks:
Hawk is able to soar high above the earth to soar on the breath of Spirit, to commune with Spirit and thus understand through the intuitive level what the message means and with their keen eyesight, how to implement it once they return to earth through seeing the broader picture below.

I'm sure that if there is something I'm supposed to learn from the hawks that eventually I'll be made aware of it, but meanwhile I know there are some brilliant and insightful readers out there. Any ideas?

An astrological tribute to Molly Ivins, the Radical Virgo

Although I was a fan of Molly Ivins for years, it wasn't until the Bush administration that her biting yet hilarious wit became a must-read for anyone skeptical of the Bush presidency. Ivins was celebrated for her unconventional and unabashedly liberal views and her passion for life and for her rebellious disdain for those in power.

Click chart to enlarge. Molly Ivins was born with a powerful Virgo influence including the Sun. That will surprise anyone who knows that Virgos are typically shy and modest and dislike the spotlight. However, Molly's Sun was exactly conjunct Jupiter, the planet that expands and enlarges our perspective. A Jupiter/Sun conjunction indicates someone who is bigger than life, who approaches every aspect of her life in a big way. Rarely do these people do anything in moderation, and there is an expansion (Jupiter) of the ego (Sun) which affords a healthy sense of self-esteem and self-confidence. Jupiter confers a strong sense of mission and someone with this planetary combination often feels they have been personally chosen to accomplish this mission.

This Sun/Jupiter conjunction is in conflict with (squares) the planet Uranus. Uranus is the rebel, the revolutionary. Uranus flaunts convention and can be unpredictable and erratic. When in a difficult aspect to the Sun, there is an almost relentless pressure to overturn the status quo and effect change for the simple sake of change. The addition of Jupiter here simply increases this tendency to "go off the deep end." However, with Jupiter and Uranus there is a deep-rooted desire for justice and equality and the Sun adds the energy to fulfill the mission. From the beginning of Molly's career in the early 1960s, she made heroes of those involved in the "movements of social change" and celebrated their accomplishments.

The combination of Sun/Jupiter in Virgo that conflicts with Uranus made Molly a classic "Radical Virgo." Where Virgos are typically known for their caution and conservative approach to life, the Radical Virgo is one who uses the Virgo powers of discrimination and versatility to change the world. Virgo is famously critical and particular, and Molly's Virgo vision gave her a laserlike view into the workings of the political structure. Mercury (thought process) in her chart was also in Virgo and it was conjunct Chiron (the wounded healer archetype), urging her to use her powers of communication (Mercury) to effect change and transformation (Chiron).

Being the sign of the Virgin, a word that in antiquity meant "unmarried woman," those born under the Virgo influence are often comfortable remaining single for long periods of time. Molly Ivins never married and poured her spectacular energy into her work. She never ceased speaking truth to power, whether it was the Texas legislature, her employers or a long series of Presidents. In her own words, "So keep fightin' for freedom and justice, beloveds, but don't you forget to have fun doin' it. Lord, let your laughter ring forth. Be outrageous, ridicule the fraidy-cats, rejoice in all the oddities that freedom can produce. And when you get through kickin' ass and celebratin' the sheer joy of a good fight, be sure to tell those who come after how much fun it was."

It is interesting astrologically that at the time of Molly's death this week transiting Uranus and Jupiter, which have been square to each other in the sky, were transiting the Sun/ Jupiter/ Uranus combination in Molly's chart. We often see Jupiter transits at the time of death, but the addition of Uranus, particularly in aspect to the configuration that directed Molly's outrage and quest for social justice, indicates that something powerful is likely to come out of her death. In death she has become even more of a hero than she was in life.

Saturn/Neptune: Deflating the illusion

Work entitled "Alchemy" at Mamtaart.com

I don't see how the American public could have been convinced by the Bush White House that the threat from global warming was political, but there certainly is no escaping the reality now according to the Washington Post (and thousands of other news articles):
Global warming is "very likely" caused by man, meaning more than 90 percent certain. That's the strongest expression of certainty to date from the panel.

_If nothing is done to change current emissions patterns of greenhouse gases, global temperature could increase as much as 11 degrees Fahrenheit by 2100.

_But if the world does get greenhouse gas emissions under control _ something scientists say they hope can be done _ the best estimate is about 3 degrees Fahrenheit.

_Sea levels are projected to rise 7 to 23 inches by the end of the century. Add another 4 to 8 inches if recent, surprising melting of polar ice sheets continues.

Neptune inspires us towards a connection with the divine, but it also can confuse and delude us. The polarization of Saturn as a reality check against the dreamy naivete of Neptune forces us to confront areas in our lives where we have been deceived or confused, or where we have been avoiding the truth. The debacle that is the Iraq War, which began as such a romantic notion for many people, is also revealed now in its most horrific form as a catalyst for social breakdown that is likely to spread throughout the middle east as Islamic factions begin to war against each other as we are seeing in Iraq and among the Palestinians.

On a personal level, if our eyes are open to our own truth and pierce the veil of illusion that separates us from our true nature, the opposition of Saturn to Neptune can be a powerful and positive force for change on a deep internal level. When we are anchored deep within ourselves, we witness the upheaval and chaos in the world outside without losing our center. We control what we can, and what we cannot we must surrender. Meanwhile, the transformation process continues.

Goodbye Molly Ivins

Jill says it as well as I could:

Molly Ivins can't do that, can she?

Alas, she can. Molly Ivins died far too soon [yesterday] at the age of sixty-two.

I'm not sure if we could have made it through the last six years without Molly Ivins' passion and humor. For all that she, as a Texan, knew long before most Americans what they were getting when they allowed George W. Bush to assume the presidency, she never succumbed to despair, instead deciding to fight the Bush junta with her best weapon -- humor.

There really isn't anything I can say that can illustrate what we lost today, so I'll just let Molly Ivins speak for herself one last time:
We are the people who run this country. We are the deciders. And every single day, every single one of us needs to step outside and take some action to help stop this war. Raise hell. Think of something to make the ridiculous look ridiculous. Make our troops know we're for them and trying to get them out of there. Hit the streets to protest Bush's proposed surge. If you can, go to the peace march in Washington on Jan. 27. We need people in the streets, banging pots and pans and demanding, "Stop it, now!"
If we won't do it for ourselves, and we won't do it for the generations to come, then for God's sake let's do it for Molly. It's the least we can do after all she did for us.

Full Moon today! And proof of the Moon's power.

February begins in the shadow of the Full Moon in Leo which will be at maximum fullness at 12:46 am est on February 2. During the Full Moon, the solar conscious mind opposes the lunar instinct of the subconscious, illuminating the essence of the sign through which the Full Moon expresses itself.

The Full Moon in Leo is typically a time to celebrate the full expression of the individual ego - in Leo we are most enthusiastically the divine beings that we are intended to be. The Moon now is opposite a wide conjunction of Chiron to the Sun in Aquarius, the sign that transcends the individual ego for the sake of the collective. With Chiron opposite the Moon, our unconscious needs (Moon) are pressured by Chiron to make themselves known, resulting in some discomfort as we experience the pain of dissatisfaction as the Sun illuminates the hidden dimensions of our lunar experience.

Dawn sent me this article from the Independent:
For eons, folklore has blamed the Moon for everything from lunacy to bad luck. And, for the last few centuries, scientists have scoffed. Now, according to new research they're not so sure. The Moon may not be made of cheese, but it seems to influence a lot more down on Earth than we previously thought.

According to new research, the Moon affects not only the tides of the oceans but also people, producing a range of symptoms from flare-ups of gout to bladder problems. It may even lie behind the causes of car crashes and affect people's hormonal balances.

Having carried out new research and reviewed 50 other studies, scientists suggest that doctors and the police even need to prepare for how their work rate will increase at different points in the lunar cycle. Among the findings examined by the researchers were studies that showed GP consultations go up during a full moon, according to Leeds University. Appointments rise by 3.6 per cent, which works out at around three extra patients for each surgery. The researchers did not speculate on the nature of the moon-related problems or why they happened, but said that "it does not seem to be related to anxiety and depression".

Gout and asthma attacks peak during new and full moons, according to work carried out at the Slovak Institute of Preventive and Clinical Medicine in Bratislava, where attacks over a 22-year period were monitored.
Read more...If scientists begin to believe that the Moon's tides do exert a pull on human behavior, it's just a short step to acceptance of other planetary influences, right?

Uranus: electrical breakdowns and malfunctions

Usually we see this predominate when Mercury is retrograde, but the last few weeks since Jupiter squared Uranus anecdotal evidence reports that such problems are rampant. Delayed travel, downed websites (mine and many of the ones I am trying to visit!). Miscommunication and situations that require renegotiation. Technology and personal communication both require the transfer of information from one port to another, and when the electrical energy of the planet Uranus is expanded and aggrandized by Jupiter's tendency to overinflate a situation when in a square aspect, problems seem to arise.

I am not a scientist, but I have a healthy respect for the power of electrical fields. The earth itself is a magnetic body, and the human body generates its own magnetic field. We are familiar with the traditional astrological meaning of Uranus: rebellion, radical change, autonomy, insight. But Uranus is also associated with electricity and on a more transcendent level, the electromagnetic field that surrounds the body. It makes sense to me that an expansion by Jupiter of the electromagnetic fields of Uranus could create situations where the connections between various electric fields go haywire, causing a disruption in the transfer of information.

This has long been known by the ancient Vedic sages who described the biomagnetic bodies, or "sheaths" of the human being as beginning with the physical body to the more subtle bodies. Disruption of the electrical signals within the body can lead to illness and psychoemotional reactions, and it makes sense to me that a change in the quality of electromagnetic fields could have an disruptive effect. Comments anyone?
