Christopher HItchens and Pluto in Sag

Christopher Hitchens has a new book out called "God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything." While I totally agree with his premise that religion (Sagittarius) has poisoned many things and created more wars than anything else, I am saddened by his obvious need, like so many skeptics, to throw out any sense of wonder in life's magic for the sake of objectivity and "science."

In an article last week Hitchens lumps astrology together with other hoaxes of religion:
Astrology is widely considered to be discredited because of certain very obvious objections:

1) It gives people the impression that they are the center of the universe and that the constellations are somehow arranged with them in mind.

2) It suggests that there is a supernatural supervision of our daily lives, and that this influence can be detected and expounded by mere humans.

3) It bases itself on the idea that our character and personality are irrevocably formed at the moment of birth or even of conception.

Who does not know how to laugh at the credulity of those who fall for this ancient hoax? And why would it matter, except that religion, too, believes that the cosmos was created with us in mind, that our lives are supervised by an almighty force that priests and rabbis and imams can interpret, and that – by way of doctrines such as “original sin” – our natures have been largely determined when we are still in the womb or the cradle.
All the points Hitchens makes are indisputable. Astrology is indeed centered on the person, which is why it is geocentric (with the planets and luminaries orbiting the earth) rather than heliocentric (with the sun in the center). There is indeed a suggestion of a supernatural force that can be detected by mere humans. And, most mysteriously, that the moment of birth does define certain elements of our personality.

The comments to this article are very interesting. I particularly like this one: "Actually, I think astrology is on firmer footing than religion. It has no moral codes, demands no worship and supports no wars. I don’t think astrology asserts, as you say, that “the cosmos was created with us in mind” – rather that we, like the stars, are a part of the cosmos."

Last weekend's Parade magazine featured an article about the mysterious "dark matter" that appears to be causing the expansion of the universe. It's clear that scientists don't know everything there is to know about our reality!

Burst Bubbles and the US Chart

image from Worth1000.com

Despite a 6.5% decline in the Chinese stock markets, the Dow Jones and S&P averages relentlessly rose to a new high and the Nasdaq index went up 21 points. Americans are unique in their unabashed optimism and the apparent belief that what goes up need not come down. In that belief we have forgotten the lessons of Icarus, who constructed a pair of wax wings so that he could fly to the Sun. You might remember what happened as those wax wings flew too close to the Sun!

Ever since the birth of the US Americans have doggedly sought expansion (Sagittarius rising in the US chart) with a compulsive need to acquire more and more possessions (Pluto in the second house). Originally it was a land expansion as settlers moved westward in the late 1700s and early 1800s, obliterating native populations in the desire to append more and more land to the burgeoning new nation. One in ten pioneers died making the trek across the country.

Later a telegraph fever swept the country in the mid 1800s, laying more telegraph lines that could possibly be used. Thousands of eager investors lost their life savings. In the late 1800s railroad fever swept the country. Again, more railroad tracks were laid than could possibly be used, and one out of four railroad companies tanked causing a multitude of bankruptcies. In the 1920s credit fever swept the country: now you could buy anything you wanted "on time" with no money, including stocks! Speculation rather than investment fueled the stock market, and when it crashed many people owed their brokers more than they had invested.

In more recent memory, the "new economy" of the dot-com bubble (facilitated by the entry of transiting Pluto into Sagittarius) drove tech stocks to soaring heights, attracting speculative investors by the millions. The new technology facilitated online stock investing by the masses, and stocks in companies that had no assets and no income continued to rise with no end in sight, resulting in a crash as the bubble burst in the months leading up to September 11 just as transiting Pluto stationed direct exactly on the US ascendant.

Americans have to have bigger stores, bigger houses, and bigger cars than they had before. In 1974 the average home size in the US was 1400 square feet; in 2004 it was 2330 square feet. But that's still not enough - now now the second home market is the fastest growing segment of the US housing market, but 28% of all second home buyers (according to a recent study) intend to sell within five years. This is the kind of speculation that fuels a bubble.

The problem with this kind of expansion is that it is fueled by restlessness and dissatisfaction, without ever providing the benefits of peace and contentment. The passage of Pluto through the first house of the US chart has challenged Americans to redefine themselves and their national identity. Sagittarius is associated with religion and shared ideals as well as expansion and adventure, and for some Pluto through the Sagittarian first house of the US has brought with it a compulsive need to redefine the national identity through religion. Pluto cannot be so nicely compartmentalized, however; instead it breaks down the structures that no longer serve us and we are seeing this breakdown in the splintering of the national political situation.

Transiting Pluto is now sextile the US Moon, a harmonious aspect that encourages the transformation (Pluto) of the emotional underpinnings of the country and family roots (Moon). It is likely that housing will not crash altogether during this time.

It is difficult to predict when the stock market and housing bubbles will begin to pop - we thought this would happen when Saturn squared Jupiter last year; we thought it would happen when Saturn opposed Neptune. Ray Merriman predicted it would happen when Jupiter squared Uranus, but the markets continue their relentless climb. I do feel that it is important during times of national frenzy of any kind to try to avoid becoming caught up in the energy of mass hysteria, but instead to step back and maintain a presence that can give us the discrimination required to remain sensible.

Full Moon tomorrow and the Ceres/Pluto trine

Tomorrow's Full Moon occurs at 9:05 pm EDT and brings with it a flood of positive energy. The Moon is full in Sagittarius, the sign of expansion, adventure and optimism. During the Full Moon the solar light of conscious awareness illuminates the instinctive depths of our lunar experience, and in Sagittarius our own lunar depths are lit up with a bright fire of knowledge and awareness. Sagittarius loves a good party, and the Sagittarius Full Moon is a time of celebration.

Mars adds a burst of energy: finding its fullest expression in Aries, the sign which it rules, it trines the Sun/Jupiter conjunction and showers us with courage and inspiration. Beth Owl's Daughter has synchronistically pulled the Knight of Wands card for this week, the perfect metaphor for the Mars/Jupiter combination:
The Knight of Wands is spontaneous, hot-headed, charismatic, quick to laugh or anger, and a creative blaze of activity. He is often charming, and pulsing with sexual energy. But he is also extremely loyal to his, understandably, huge circle of friends. While he can be impulsive and unpredictable, he takes his honor and integrity absolutely to heart, and is a true heroic figure.
Expanding the party is a conjunction of the Moon to Jupiter, the ruling planet of Sagittarius. Despite the broader planetary influences which are challenging us (see below), Jupiter and Sagittarius look for the higher path to freedom. Preferring to ignore the darkness, for the next few days we have a clear sightline to the light at the end of the tunnel. This could be a danger, however, because the opposition of the Full Moon (Sun opp Moon) is exactly square to the lunar nodes forming a lunar Grand Cross. The north node and south node of the lunar path are signposts pointing the way, and stressful aspects to the nodes tend to indicate blockages on the path. Staying too long at this Full Moon party could distract us from the greater journey that we travel. Still, there is a tremendous amount of power in a Grand Cross configuration, and balancing the bright expansion of this Jupiterian Full Moon with an awareness of our greater destiny will help us to maximize the potential of the event.

There are two longer-term cycles influencing this Full Moon: Saturn is nearing the culmination of its opposition to Neptune where it is creating tension between the rules we create for ourselves (Saturn) and our desire to escape into a more fantastic life (Neptune), and Jupiter is still within range of a square to Uranus where it is urging us to break free of all boundaries and seek surprising (Uranus) adventures (Jupiter). This square of Uranus also squares the Moon now which is bound to add an element of surprise.

On the day of the Full Moon, Ceres makes an exact trine to retrograde Pluto. As Pluto travels back in time to revisit areas that need to be demolished to make way for new beginnings, the nourishment and deep love that Ceres offers is available to facilitate the process of endings and rebirth. Chiron is exactly sextile Jupiter now and widely sextile the Full Moon, offering an opportunity for healing emotional wounds and opening our hearts to receive an abundance of beauty.

The influence of the lunations (Full and New Moons) is generally thought to extend for three days before and three days after the actual event. Full Moons in general, and this one in particular, offer us an infusion of energy and creative power that can set in motion events that create long lasting changes. The conscious use of this power is what real magic is all about!

Saturn/Neptune and Great Expectations

Check out Dharma's post from Sunday which fills in some of the blanks in my portrait of JFK's health issues. He also muses on the expectations parents place on children and how that is reflected in the birthchart in Saturn/Neptune contacts:
I think it’s natural for parents to have hopes and dreams for their kids, even unrealistic ones, dreams that perhaps compensate for what they haven’t managed to achieve. If you’ve built up a business, you’re probably going to want one of your kids to join it and build it further – and at the same time, you may be jealous of their youth and success, and you may try to undermine them. We’re a bundle of contradictions, with feet of clay (Saturn) dreaming of the stars and of redemption (Neptune.

Lindsay Lohan and the Uranus Square

Lindsey Lohan has been blessed with beauty and success, but over the past year she has become the subject of tabloid headlines. Most recently she was arrested for drunk driving and the possible possession of cocaine.

(See birthchart link.) Lindsey was born under the sign of Cancer - symbolized by the crab, Cancerians are sensitive, emotional, and can be prickly. Lindsey's Sun is opposed by Neptune, the misty planet that represents creativity and spirituality but also the blurring of boundaries, showing her ability to slip in and out of acting roles but also a tendency to lose her sense of self (represented by the Sun). Lindsey's Moon (emotional security) is in Taurus (stability and pleasure), showing that she needs stability and material security in order to feel emotional secure, and it interacts
harmoniously with her drive for success as shown by Mars (drive and boundaries) in Capricorn (hard work and success). Jupiter (where we find meaning in life) in Lindsey's chart is in sensitive and creative Pisces, giving her an added sensitivity and empathy to the needs of others.

Lindsay is a radical at heart - her chart shows Jupiter (planet of expansion) is locked in a battle with rebellious Uranus. Stressful aspects of Jupiter indicate a person whose confidence is somewhat overblown and there is often arrogance present there. Uranus in the chart creates an urge for dramatic and sudden changes; there is a strong need to defy convention and be one's own person. The small planet Chiron is also involved in that battle with both Jupiter and Uranus, increasing her emotional sensitivity and suggesting that her need for expansion (Jupiter) and liberation (Uranus) are essential to her ability to heal the painful wounds of her past (Chiron). Unfortunately, it also shows a tendency to run from problems rather than face them head-on.

This dynamic in Lindsay's chart has been put in a pressure cooker under a planetary cycle of transiting Uranus over this sensitive system of her chart. This is a long-term cycle that began in April of this year and will continue until March of 2009, but it is particularly strong now because of the addition of transiting Jupiter to the mix. A transit of Jupiter gives us optimism and confidence but it can also stimulate recklessness because we have little concern for the outcome of our actions. The Jupiter influence will continue for Lindsay into the fall.

Also this fall, a series of both harmonious and challenging Saturn transits will bring Lindsay down to earth and she is likely to find more discipline at that time. If we don't face the reality of our life during a Saturn transit we can be faced with difficulties, so it may be that this discipline is enforced on her as a result of her excessive behavior. But Saturn rewards our hard work, and if she is smart or lucky she will find the discipline within herself to face her responsibilities which will help to facilitate her continued success.

This is interesting in light of my previous ramblings on the Saturn/Uranus square which creates a tension between liberation and conservatism, only for Lindsay this comes in transit form rather than natal aspects. It will be interesting to see how she handles the pressure of Saturn when it comes this fall in tandem with the longer-term Uranus cycle.

Fundamentalism: Fear of freedom

Leslie over at Karmic Knowledge has posted a very interesting article about Jerry Falwell's karmic choice between fundamentalism and freedom. She posts a quote from writer Steven Pressfield that I found particularly potent:
…The human being isn’t wired to function as an individual. We’re wired tribally, to act as part of a group… We know what the clan is; how to fit into the band and the tribe. What we don’t know is how to be alone. We don’t know how to be free individuals.
It is this individuation that Uranus has come to stimulate. We could argue that in the past 2000 years, until the discovery of Uranus in the late 1700s, there was very little if any focus on the right of the individual to follow his or her own path. Humans were members of tribes, or clans, or religious groups, or subject to the rule of royalty. Individual liberties were accorded only to the royal or privileged classes. The discovery of Uranus correlated to an international revolutionary fervor that demanded these liberties for the common wo/man as well as for the monied few.

As Leslie points out, in Jerry Falwell's chart Saturn is in Aquarius (ruled by Uranus) where it creates a discomfort (Saturn) around issues of individuation (Aquarius). Saturn is the planet of rules and restrictions, of governmental law and conservativism. Those of us born in the early 1950s and the late 1970s have Saturn and Uranus square in our charts, creating conflict between the urge for freedom and individuality (Uranus) and the drive for convention and safety (Saturn). This can lead to wild swings between individualistic behavior and conservatism and depending on the rest of the chart can create a real fear of freedom that keeps one rooted in conservatism.

As in any inner astrological conflict, the key to resolution is in creating balance between the two dynamics rather than swinging from one extreme to another. Sometimes this takes a lifetime to achieve!

Astrological Weather

I have long been fascinated by the possibility of forecasting the weather by the planets and I recently found a website (unfortunately I don't recall the path I took) called The Weather Alternative that is quite interesting.

Here in North Carolina we could really use some rain, and summer hurricanes off the Atlantic coast usually provide that rain for us. The Weather Alternative reports:
June 5-8, 2007:
The opposition between the Sun and Jupiter will trigger the lunar eclipse of March 3, 2007, affecting the coastal areas of North and South Carolina between 77 and 79 West Longitude and 33 North Latitude. Its influence extends northward through New Jersey. The warm influence, characteristic of Sun-Jupiter alignments, and high velocity winds, indicated by aspects between Jupiter and Uranus (also present at this time), carry the potential for severe weather over this area, which may be tropical in nature.
June 15-17, 2007:
Seventy-seven West Longitude, running through Cuba, the Bahamas, and North Carolina is the focal point for increased wind velocities as Mercury makes its retrograde station. The Moon also adds to the mix by being at its closest approach to Earth and at maximum north declination as it conjoins Mercury. If not an actual tropical system, a cold front dropping through the Northeast pushes southward toward the Carolinas triggering windy conditions.
June 24-July 3, 2007:
This is an important time due to the opposition between Saturn and Neptune, which correlates with excessive humidity, prolonged heavy rains, and flood threats. (See specifics below)
June 24-27, 2007:
The central to eastern Gulf Coast is in jeapordy now as tropical moisture is shunted northward over the region pushing into the Mississippi Valley and Deep South.

Other areas worth watching for severe weather are western Canada around 117 West/51 North, and Ireland.
June 27-29, 2007:
The eastern Gulf and Gulf Coast are still under the gun as the Sun conjoins Mercury. These two coincide with increased wind velocity and, in season, hurricane formation. The central panhandle of Florida and northward through Atlanta are places in the line of fire now.
June 30-July 3, 2007:
Venus now triggers the Saturn-Neptune opposition drawing moisutre up over South Carolina and the Southeast.

Expect an influx of mositure from the south over the Baja California into the Desert Southwest.
The site also keeps track of its predictions compared to the actual weather events, and the comparisons are pretty impressive!

Memorial Day musings

I was a student during the Vietnam war, and in demonstrations and marches against the war we decried the philosophy of our government that killing for peace made sense. On September 11 we were attacked by Osama bin Laden, and 2,646 Americans were killed.

Since then, 3,813 Americans have been killed in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. 398 private contractors of various nationalities have been killed. Nearly 7,000 Iraqi forces have been killed, and anywhere from 60,000 to over 600,000 civilians and over 100 journalists.

I am not a pacifist, but I believe in healing. Where there is dysfunction, there is a need for healing that dysfunction. If Americans are hated, perhaps we should find out why. We had a beautiful opportunity in Afghanistan after the attacks of September 11 to go into that country and rebuild it; to drive out the Taliban and capture bin Laden and win the hearts and mind of the people. Instead we took every resource of the US military into a country that did not attack us and that we couldn't maintain.

Perhaps we could take some of the billions of dollars being spent by military contractors to rebuild Iraq over and over again, and invest in programs in the middle east that would help the people in these countries. This is what Hazbollah has successfully done for years in Lebanon. This is what AlQaeda is trying to do; provide funds and a sense of pride.

Killing for peace has never been a goal that makes sense. In the '60s, we used to say "Killing for peace is like f*#cking for chastity." To kill innocent civilians for peace didn't make sense then and it doesn't make sense now. On this Memorial Day, let's remember those that have fallen in the name of ego and finance and pray for wiser leaders, and then vote in that direction!!

Now you can cook by sun sign

Actually, our Sun sign actually has very little to do with our personality but instead is much more about your essential mission on Planet Earth. The personality is described by the ascendant and the relationship between the other planets. So an astrology cookbook might not be that useful.

A Latvian publisher has produced a cookbook with Latvian recipes for different signs, such as spicy food for Aries (fire sign), root vegetables for Virgo (an earth sign), soups for Cancer (water sign).

As an air sign, I suppose I would eat birds, too bad for a quasi-vegetarian. But what about my Jupiter in Taurus squared by Venus that loves sweets too much than is good for me? And what about my Mercury in the sixth house that is obsessed with health despite the sweet tooth? What about my Venus in Scorpio that loves spicy food?

Unless you have a chart containing one element (fire, earth, air or water), or just adore Latvian food, I would steer clear of this cookbook.

Neptune Rx and Disillusionment

Urania has a wonderful post subtitled "The Magic of Believing":
Fairy Godmother’s magic can only last so long, and when midnight strikes, the coach turns back into a pumpkin.

Ah, the pain of disillusion.

We’re all there to some extent: feeling a bit lost and wondering if we really must grow up, as Saturn, ruler of time and bringer of old-age, stands opposing Neptune, fantasist, ecape-artist, and ideologue.

Neptune goes Stationary Retrograde on May 24, 2007 at the 23rd degree of Aquarius, a degree associated with the modern, electronically broadcast imagery of celebrity. . . .

The Neptune in Capricorn years, 1984 to 1998, were the years that the Religious Right, under the guidance of politician Newt Gingrich and the television evangelists, primarily Pat Robertson and the recently deceased Jerry Falwell, planted the seeds that grew into an extensive underground network for the complete takeover of the United States government.

In the area of law, the theocrats used an organization called the Federalist Society, a country-club organization for right-wing lawyers to network and take over the federal judiciary and turn the country toward fascism. The Federalist Society is the jump start from law school to the country club, the way to get juiced into the system. All you have to do is be TC, theologically correct. And a totally loyal Republican.

Now that we are experiencing the final third of the Saturn in Leo/Neptune in Aquarius opposition, we are coming to realize the vast religio-political deception that has been foisted upon the most gullible sectors of the population.

Never was a more dangerous and deceptive ploy for a totalitarian takeover revealed than is now coming to the fore as book after book is published documenting the chicanery.

And hopefully, by the time this oppostion is over and Neptune goes Stationary Direct by late autumn of 2007 — on Halloween, to be precise — we will have uncovered and outgrown this dangerous time in American history. Let’s hope by then that Congress will have overturned the Enemy Combatant Act, Bush’s Halloween nightmare surprise for us last year just before the 2006 Congressional elections.

Urania ends with a quote from Chief Seattle who I feel I know after spending an afternoon at his grave last fall:

All things are connected.
Whatever befalls the Earth
Befalls the sons of Earth.
Man did not weave the web of life.
He is merely a strand in it.
Whatever he does to the web,
He does to himself.

Rosie O'Donnell's Mars Problem

It's no secret that the most brilliant comedians are often depressed and angry individuals who release their frustration through comedy, and Rosie O'Donnell is no exception. Rosie was born with the Sun in Aries, the sign that is ruled by the god of war. The Aries influence is dynamic and inspirational but can also be rebellious and impulsive. Rosie O'Donnell exhibits all of these character traits.

Mars in her chart, the planet that rules her Aries Sun, falls in the mystical and adaptable sign of Pisces. When the fiery god of war (Mars) is expressed through the watery sign of empathy and the subconscious (Pisces), there is a tendency for unconscious resentments, anger turned inward into depression. In addition, Pisces tends to shrink from conflict so Mars in Pisces can produce passive aggressive behavior that doesn't confront a problem directly but instead is outwardly peaceful (Pisces) but subtly sabotages a situation.

Mars in Rosie's chart is conjunct Mercury, the planet of communication and transmission of ideas, a combination that links her aggressive instinct (Mars) with her thoughts and words (Mercury). Because Mercury is also in sensitive Pisces, Rosie is extremely empathic and compassionate to those around her, but she can also become a warrior (Mars) with words (Mercury) when she is crossed. Both Mars and Mercury are conjunct Chiron, the god of wounding and healing, which suggests a hypersensitivity that can be very reactive.

This Mars/Mercury/Chiron combination is opposed by Pluto, the planet of power and transformation. When the god of war faces off with the god of the underworld, there are power struggles and a sense of frustration that both generates a tremendous amount of physical energy but also can lead to an underlying rage. Mercury in opposition to Pluto shows an individual with an intensely probing mind who can become overly obsessive. Because in Rosie's chart her frustration and rage is difficult to express through the watery Pisces influence, she carries that frustration around within her where it leaks out at inopportune moments, such as Rosie's recent feuds with Donald Trump and Elisabeth Hasselbeck.

Rosie's independence as shown by her Aries Sun is exacerbated by an opposition in her chart between Jupiter's confidence and expansive tendencies to the rebellion and radical behavior of Uranus. This is a revolutionary and will dynamic that seeks to overturn the status quo and achieve liberation. Rosie's revolutionary tendencies upsets the more conservative members of society, but these tendencies are wired into her chart and define who she really is.

Still, Rosie's Libra Moon shows that at the core she craves peace and harmony and desires to please those around her and establish effective partnerships. Conflict upsets her and she likely finds it difficult to handle the tremendous amount of controversy that her behavior generates. Rosie has been going through some difficult cycles involving Mars (aggression and anger), her progressed Moon (emotions and sensitivity) and her Sun (her essential identity). She is likely experiencing quite a bit of personal distress, and her job provides her with an outlet for release through controversy. This summer will bring her into an increasingly powerful series of Mars cycles that could lead to more and more frustration, but in the fall these cycles become more positive and it may become easier for her to integrate her anger in a way that is more productive.

Owl's Wings - a bit of magic

My friend and tarot goddess Beth Owl's Daughter recently sent me a link to her blog which I am enthusiastically adding to the blogroll under Cool Sites and Blog Friends. This is a beautiful site with inspiration and tips for leading a more magical life. An excerpt:
In most spiritual traditions, the garden is viewed as a holy place. Since the dawn of civilization, gardens have been sacred sites for the invocation of the Gods, for meditation, inspiration, and reflection. It is no accident that in medieval times, monastery gardens were both utilitarian places that provided food and medicine, as well as havens for prayer. In Japan and China, gardens offer peace, privacy, and a place for meditation. And in the folklore of ancient Britain, magical associations are given to nearly every tree, herb, bush and flower of the wayside and the garden.

For the garden is a magical threshold between the wildness of Nature, and the structures of humankind. People through the centuries have discovered that, out among the potatoes and lilacs, their gardens are a place of power and enchantment. From there, we can observe the effect of the Moon, the Sun, and the shifting influences of the zodiac on the growth and decline in Nature. In gardens, we can contact the beings from other realms who may otherwise be elusive or unknown to us. There, we find the faerie races that are most comfortable with human interaction, as well as the devas and elementals who are associated with the subtle creative forces of the Earth Herself.

The health of President John F Kennedy

photo from the NYT archive

Asena asked in a comment, "What do you think about JFK's birthchart? Is his birthtime accurate in your opinon.I somehow started to think that he might ha ve a different ASC than Libra after I read an article regarding his health problems. It seems to me that there is not indicators of the diseases he had diagnosed in his Libra rising birthchart."

I hadn't really looked at JFK's chart and took a quick look to respond in the comments section but the comment quickly grew into a post of its own.

I hadn't really looked at JFK's birthchart so this was an interesting exercise. (click chart to enlarge, info 5/29/1917, 3 pm, Brookline MA) There is nothing in a Libra ascendant that would preclude health problems - in fact, the desire to please others that drives Libra can drive other more socially controversial aspects underground where they arise in health issues. The charm and charisma of JFK as well as his ability to reach out and connect with people is well described by a Libra ascendant, and this birthtime does show Saturn right on the MC where it reflects the pressure of his father (Saturn) pushing him into public life (MC). And in Cancer no less, demonstrating that his public life was part of the family dynamic and not just an individual ambition.

JFK had no oppositions that would aid him in reflection and give him perspective on issues, and he surrounded himself with good friends and aids to play that role. He had an exact square from Uranus to Mars in the 8th house, showing his rebellious streak as well as a fiery rage that may not have been able to find expression with the Libra asc and that heavy midheaven. With Chiron in the sixth house, even though it is well-aspected, there is a tendency to play out emotional issues through the physical body unless attention is paid to the body's own healing mechanisms. Chiron is also the ruler of his twelfth house of unconscious influences.

JFK's first physical ailment was at the age of 2 years 9 months (according to this excellent site) when he contracted scarlet fever and almost died, just as his progressed Moon was crossing that Libra ascendant. This just happened to be the time that the fourth Kennedy sibling was born, and JFK would have been rather ignored by his mother at that time. We already know that his father favored the eldest son, Joe Jr., and that JFK lived in the shadow of his older brother. He was already the third child, with a natal Virgo moon which often denotes a mother that is critical and demands perfection. The symbolism of the progressed Moon crossing the ascendant, which is where we are seen by others, signifies JFK's need to be visible in his family, to cry out at that point for attention. His near death likely accomplished that goal.

At the age of 13, as Saturn began a transit over his IC and shortly thereafter opposed his natal Saturn (a difficult time for any young person) he wrote to his mother complaining of blindness in one eye as well as dizziness and fainting. A transit over the Midheaven/IC axis denotes a challenge to our very sense of being grounded on planet earth (IC) versus our obligations to our public life (Midheaven).

At the age of 17 JFK began a debilitating battle with colitis and other digestive problems, health issues that are usually associated with unexpressed anger as shown by the square of Uranus to Mars that could not be expressed outwardly. At the time these problems are said to have begun, JFK's progressed Mars and Mercury were on the verge of a sign change from Taurus to Gemini, where they begin to draw more attention, and were exactly squared by progressed Chiron which would have started working on his mental (Mercury) and anger (Mars) issues.

Kennedy's legendary sexual appetite is shown by the packed eighth house which includes Mars, which denotes not only anger but also shows our drive, which in the eighth house of sexuality tends to be very sexual in nature. The eighth house is also associated with death and intimacy, as well as the more prosaic "taxes and inheritance". In 1936 and 1937 Kennedy's progressed Moon traversed his eighth house, activating each planet there and creating an eruption of sexual adventures that resulted in nonspecific urethritis and other sexually transmitted disease.

In 1938, JFK's progressed Moon entered Cancer (the progressed Moon takes 2-1/2 years to travel one sign, and the change of sign typically denotes a life change of some sort). Cancer is the sign that focuses on family obligations, and suddenly Kennedy must have been overwhelmed by the responsibilities to his family that ensued. He was finishing his senior thesis while a student at Harvard and must have been looking ahead to his future and this is when the back problems that plagued him throughout his life began (back problems are associated with a sense of being overburdened and not having enough support in life). He also sought treatment for abdominal pain during this period.

By 1943 JFK was crippled with back pain, correlating to a transit of Saturn over his Sun. He faced one of the greatest trials of his life at this time with the rescue of his PT-boat shipmates and the award of medals from both the Navy and the Marine Corps. The overwhelming sense of obligation for Kennedy, a Gemini with a light nature whose Saturn on the natal Midheaven denoted an individual with great responsibilities, was evidently more than he could handle. He evidently was hospitalized twice for back surgery during his Saturn return (1943-1945) although Kennedy's medical history is sketchy and inconsistent.

In the fall of 1947 Kennedy was hospitalized with weakness, nausea and low blood pressure which was later diagnosed as Addison's disease, an immune disorder. As an interesting corollation, Kennedy's progressed Moon was again crossing his natal ascendant for the first time since he nearly died of scarlet fever at the age of two.

Between 1953 and 1955 Kennedy was hospitalized several times and nearly died as Chiron crossed the IC of his chart, opposing Saturn and his Midheaven. According to his widow Jackie, Kennedy's most severe depression came in 1961, correlating to a transit of Saturn across the Midheaven/IC axis and opposing his natal Saturn. The fact that so many of Kennedy's health problems occurred during periods of transits to the Midheaven/IC axis shows a deep inability to resolve his need to feel that he had a real place in the world (IC) with the pressure of his public responsibilities (Saturn on the Midheaven).

It is likely that Kennedy channeled the dissonant energy created by the Mars/Uranus square in his chart through his eighth house focus on sexuality. This helped to ease his inner frustration and dissipate the energy, but did not solve the more psychological issue of the need to express his own needs as described by Mars, and the frustration his inability to do so caused as indicated by the square from Uranus. In my experience, this sort of Mars problem is one of the most prevalent underlying causes of most undiagnosable health problems and immune disorders, such as fibromyalgia and Epstein-Barre syndrome.

This kind of astrological difficulty does not doom a person to a life of ill health. Understanding his need to act out his aggression in a healthy way (Mars/Uranus), setting positive boundaries within his family and between his public and private lives (Saturn on the MC), and encouraging him to take periods of retreat where he could reconnect with himself on a deep level (Saturn opposing the MC) could have helped him to balance these energies in a way that was more productive and less debilitating for his health. Reclaiming the lost parts of ourselves brings about a greater wholeness and lessens the necessity for the body to create disease in order to get our attention.

Astrology and C-section births

John Townley made a comment in response to the earlier post "A Sad Tale" about a man who killed his son because of his astrological chart. John noted:
One of the results of having astrology as a major part of the culture is that you get a lot more really strange and often tragic stories. In the last year we've linked tales from the Subcontinent and environs that include the astrologer who led a lynch mob (because of an improper marriage)and one who burned himself to death in the public square, among other sad and crazy tales. Add a lot of Caesarians, particularly recently, to get the right birth time, and it adds up to what would be the expected occasional misuse of a valuable tool when a lot of people are using it...here next, perhaps...
Although I would love to see astrology become so mainstream in the western world that it is taught in schools to help people navigate challenging times in their life, I think it's silly to use astrology for what is effectively genetic engineering. In India it is said that up to 70% of all patients in one hospital selected caesarian birth in order to choose an auspicious birthchart for their child. Evidently the trend is up elsewhere as well: in South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan and Thailand.

I've done readings for people who were born by C-section or whose mother's labor was induced pharmaceutically, and their charts are as accurate as any others so I have to conclude that no matter what the birth method the soul is still in charge.

Chiron turns retrograde today (updated)

art by the Universe, courtesy of Hubblesite.org (click to enlarge)

updated 5-22-07. With Chiron now in retrograde motion, through October of this year we are likely to revisit old wounds, learning how to release them so that we can move forward with greater wisdom. Neptune follows shortly thereafter, turning retrograde on May 24 and calling on us to connect with the deeper truth that lies within us.

The combination of Chiron and Neptune is a potent one, and as they dance towards a conjunction in early 2010 we will see their effects more and more. Neptune encourages us towards a life of spirituality and imagination; it unwinds the boundaries of our minds and hearts to permit us to expand our experience beyond previously suggested limits. Chiron is the "rainbow bridge" between the personal and the transpersonal as suggested by its eccentric orbit bridging the personal planets (through Saturn) and the transpersonal outer planets. Chiron is the doctor that heals the wounds of our earthly incarnation by bringing these wounds to our attention and facilitating their release through focused intention and presence rather than avoidance. As Chiron retrogrades back through Aquarius it will make the second in a series of sextiles to Jupiter on May 31 which will expand (Jupiter) the potential of this healing process, a process which will complete in September of this year.

As Neptune retrogrades it will revisit its exact opposition with Saturn for the final time. Under the Saturn/Neptune opposition our dreams and illusions (Neptune) have been startled into reality by Saturn, but this has worked in reverse as well with Neptune reminding us of the dry desert of what we call "reality" without a sense of life's mystery. Debates over science vs. spirituality, scandals in government revealing lies and deceit, all of these newsworthy events have passed under the umbrella of the Saturn/Neptune opposition.

On a personal level, retrogrades tend to turn our attention backwards as we are urged to revisit activities, projects, ideas, relationships that we thought were in the past. This should not frustrate us; instead we can use this sense of going one step back for every two steps forward to be sure we have completed the process before moving ahead again.

Sunday inspiration

Constantly be aware,
Without stopping.
When the aware mind is present,
It senses the formlessness of things.
Constantly see your body as empty
And quiet, inside and outside
Communing in sameness.
Plunge the body into the realm
Of reality, where there has
Never been any obstruction.

Conspiracy Corner: A new page in the Kennedy Assassination

As I've said before, with Mercury in Scorpio and Pluto in the third house of communication, I have a nose for scandal and conpsiracy. In the early 1980s I read a phenomenal book by Jim Marr called "Crossfire" about the plot to kill Kennedy which was incredibly well-researched and documented, and this book blew my mind. For 44 years now the political establishment has insisted that Lee Harvey Oswald shot Kennedy with a single bullet.

Now, in a stunning confluence of Jupiter square Uranus (stunning news and the turning over of the status quo) and the Saturn/Neptune opposition (the exposure of our delusions) scientific investigation has blown a hole in the lone gunman theory by analyzing bullet fragments.

I'm sure it's only a coincidence that a book by Vincent Bugliosi concluding that Oswald WAS the lone shooter was also released this week.

Saturn was tightly square Neptune at the time of the assassination, and 70% of Americans believe that there was a conspiracy and a coverup.

A sad tale and correlated musings

From Tamil Nadu in India comes this sad tale of astrology gone wrong:
A blind faith in astrology has led to a man killing his own son. The bizarre incident occurred at Veerappanchatram here recently.

Murugesan (40), working as a watchman in a private firm at Pallipalayam, killed his son Sadurshan (9) by pushing him into the Cauvery river after he was told by an astrologer that his son's birth timing was the cause for all his sufferings. . . .

The police on suspicion interrogated Murugesan who confessed to have committed the murder. "I sacrificed my son for the welfare of my family," he told the police. Murugesan was arrested.
Vedic astrology (from India) tends to be more oriented towards predicting the future than Western astrology which typically takes a more humanist or psychological perspective. Because astrology is so much more widely accepted in India there are many more astrologers serving the population, and therefore we tend to see more of these stories coming from India. Still, bad astrology is bad astrology.

Perhaps this man's son was a difficult or even impossible behavioral case. I heard a story on NPR today about bipolar children in families and the toll they took on the healthy children in the family that started my mind wandering. I believe that difficult children are likely the more sensitive in the family who absorb the hidden dynamics of the other family members. Hidden stress, rage, sadness - all these emotions erupt from the soul of the sensitive child into the family arena where they can be seen by all. A friend of mine who worked at a training (reform) school told me years ago that when the "bad seed" enters the training school, one of the other children in the family suddenly turns bad. I always found that very interesting because I myself was the bad seed in my family, and also, I believe, the most sensitive.

But back to astrology...I believe that no fate is set in stone, else what would be the point of human existence?? One chart can reflect a saint or a sinner; a failure or a massive success. We are given the tools, and we choose how to wield them. Any astrologer or forecaster of any kind who attempts to predict an ironclad future for an individual is serving no one, in my opinion, but himself.

Paris goes to Prison

I decided to publish the Paris profile here after all - she turned out to be more interesting than I thought!

Paris Hilton is widely dismissed as a dumb blonde, but her birthchart shows her with the Sun conjunct Mercury - a placement that usually denotes a powerful mind and strong intelligence. With both the Sun and Mercury in Aquarius she is creative and individualistic as well, making her own way through the world with a strong independent streak. She is not a person who would be content to live off the fruits of her family fortune, but needs to make her own way in the world. Although she is very bright, Mercury in her chart is retrograde (meaning it appeared to turn backwards at the time that she was born) which shows that communication is difficult for her and it can be difficult for her to make herself understood. Perhaps there was an early learning disability that further eroded her confidence about her mental abilities.

Aquarius is a rational and reasonable sign that is not concerned with matters of emotion but lives more in the realm of ideas, but Paris's Sun and Mercury are in the last degrees of Aquarius and bleeding into the watery sign of Pisces. (The notion of the "cusp" is true only at the last degrees of one sign, but once a planet goes into the next sign there is no more cusp influence.) Aquarius and Pisces are both creative signs, with Aquarius being intellectually creative and Pisces creativity coming from a more divine inspiration. And the introduction of the sensitivity into Paris's personality through the Pisces influence will help to offset the more revolutionary tendencies of her Aquarian nature.

Mars (the aggressive instinct) in Paris's chart is also in sensitive Pisces, suggesting that she has difficulty expressing her needs and anger directly. Mars in Pisces can be rather passive aggressive because it is difficult to confront challenges directly. With Mars in Pisces there is a tendency to stir up trouble while attempting to appear that one is not involved in the conflict.

Still, Paris is a revolutionary and a radical, as shown by a square from Mars to the radical planet of change: Uranus. Paris has a drive (Mars) to create change in the world (Uranus), and she sometimes attempts to accomplish this through extreme means. She is an iconoclast, defined as "one who attacks and seeks to overthrow traditional or popular ideas or institutions."

Paris's Leo Moon shows that she needs recognition on a very personal level, she needs to be admired and feel that she has a special place in the world. This need is a part of her overall personal evolution as shown by the North Node in Leo which conjoins her Moon. The North Node of the Moon is a sign marker that shows where we need to focus our energy in order to best maximize our soul's journey, and for Paris there is a strong need to celebrate through play and fun. For much of her early life this has occurred through the global party circuit, but as she matures she will hone this need to party into a more refined celebration of life itself.

Her Leo Moon is squared by Chiron (the "Wounded Healer"), showing an inner psychic wound to her confidence and emotional stability. Chiron is also square to her Venus which reveals a deep insecurity about her attractiveness to others as well as a deep sense that at the core, she is not loveable. This lack of confidence, the passive aggression of Mars in Pisces and the wild behavior of the Mars/Uranus square combine to create a person who tends to lash out and punish those who she feels have disrespected her. Much of the buzz about Paris in the news has been over conflicts with various people whom she felt slighted her in some way.

The square from Chiron to Venus and the resulting insecurity often does lead to sexual indiscretion, and it is to her credit that at an early age she realized that making herself an easy sexual target was not a good idea and she entered a one-year period of self-imposed celibacy. It is likely that Paris's love affair with the papparazzi is due at least in part to her severe insecurity and need to prove to the world that she is the attractive woman that she fears she is not.

Another indicator of relationship difficulty is Saturn (restrictions and disappointment) conjunct Jupiter (expansion and idealism) in Libra, the sign of relationships. Paris has no trouble making friends and finding lovers (Jupiter in Libra) but then the limitations imposed by Saturn kick in and she is forced to face the difficult issues that underlie the relationships. Still, this combination of Saturn and Jupiter builds inner strength and as she matures she will find that this combination begins to serve her in a different way, to become more discriminating and to learn how to build lasting commitments. This combination of Jupiter and Saturn is a good marker for success if the individual does not become overly disappointed by periods of failure but instead stays focused and disciplined.

Pluto, the powerhouse of the astrological pantheon, is in a harmonious aspect (trine) to Paris's Sun/Mercury conjunction which identifies her as possessing a tremendous amount of personal power and the ability to redefine herself and process periods of transformation with ease. There is a sharpened focus as well under the Pluto influence, increasing her power of intention and ability to manifest what she wants to happen.

Now Paris is headed to jail June 5 for violating the terms of her probation stemming from a DUI arrest last fall. She is currently going through quite a few planetary cycles that involve Mars at the moment which are stirring up her rebellious nature and she has tried to escape the jail sentence, even appealing to Governor Schwarzenegger for a pardon. And transiting Chiron started setting off the Moon/Chiron/Venus t-square in her chart, bringing up old wounds and creating some emotional pain for her to work through. But with transiting Pluto in harmonious aspect to her Sun and Mercury. Harmonious Pluto cycles bring about tremendous evolution and change, and this experience is likely to have a positive impact on Paris. Already her 45 day sentence has been reduced to 23 days, and I think we will see that Paris will make the most of the situation and end up on top.

Murphy's Law

Murphy's Law states, basically, that if anything can go wrong it will. Evidently the same law has been around for many years before Murphy took credit for it; previously it was called "sod's law," because it could happen to "any old sod."

Murphy's Law has generated a whole series of similar laws such as:
  • Everything takes longer than you think.
  • Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.
  • If there is a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will cause the most damage will be the one to go wrong. Corollary: If there is a worse time for something to go wrong, it will happen then.
  • If anything simply cannot go wrong, it will anyway.
  • If you perceive that there are four possible ways in which a procedure can go wrong, and circumvent these, then a fifth way, unprepared for, will promptly develop.
  • Nature always sides with the hidden flaw.
It's easy to turn Murphy's Law into a negative approach to life, but there is another way to look at it which is to witness and appreciate the mystery that life presents us with at every turn. As astrologers, both professional and amateur, we look at our charts and attempt to use our knowledge of the planetary cycles to buffer ourselves from possible pain and loss. I used to think that looking at previous Saturn events would provide a clue to future Saturn events because the events would happen in the same astrological house, but now I know that to be a false assumption. If we are prepared for relationship problems under a Saturn transit, we will have work problems. If we are prepared for family matters a tree will fall on our house. Because a challenging planetary cycle demands something from us that is difficult it will find a way to challenge us in one way or another.

This kind of thinking flies in the face of a more "rational" approach to life which assumes that events occur in a completely random fashion, but if you keep track of the planetary cycles in your life you will soon find that while we can predict when challenge will come, we cannot predict what will happen. This is why attempting to use astrology (or any other art) to predict the future is doomed to fail; we are not meant to know. We are meant to experience the mystery and learn to have faith in the process, but we are given so many tools: Pluto to guide us through the underworld, Jupiter to provide faith and reason, Saturn to develop discipline and strength, and Neptune to facilitate the journey beyond the veils.

My friend Paul is back in the comments stream and he will probably have an argument for this, but the rationality of science has robbed us in many ways from our connection to the magic of the universe. An acceptance of Murphy's Law brings back the wonder of discovery if we face it with humor and a sense of adventure!

RIP Jerry Falwell

As the world knows by now, Jerry Falwell died yesterday from a heart attack. Falwell was a wildly controversial religious figure who through his Moral Majority movement sought influence and power in the Reagan White House. It can be argued that in many ways Falwell's movement was more political than religious and he has been quoted as saying "there is no separation between Church and State" and “The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country." (For an astrological view of the rise of the religious right, see this rather lengthy article.)

There was very little mention of Christ-like brotherly love in Falwell's teachings; in fact, his message appears to be more about hate and bigotry:
  • If you're not a born-again Christian, you're a failure as a human being.
  • (re: 9/11 attacks) "..I really believe that the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way, all of them who try to secularize America...I point the thing in their face and say you helped this happen."”
  • God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve”
  • The Jews are returning to their land of unbelief. They are spiritually blind and desperately in need of their Messiah and Savior.
Falwell (see chart) was born with the Sun in Leo, the sign that celebrates the individual ego. Leos have a strong need to be in the public eye and to gain admiration for their good works. Falwell's Sun is opposed by Saturn, the planet of restriction and self-doubt, pegging him as someone who was plagued by insecurities and loneliness throughout his life. The Sun correlates to the physical heart, and a Saturn/Sun combination can indicate heart troubles in an individual who has not worked through his emotional issues. Falwell had a history of heart problems and in 2005 was hospitalized with blocked arteries and other heart-related issues.

The fact that Falwell's arteries were 70% blocked is a metaphor for this block from Saturn to his Sun. The fact that Saturn in his chart was in retrograde motion (appearing to move backwards from our perspective on earth) shows that Saturn operated on a more internal level in his life and created a strong pressure on Falwell to always do more, to always be better because of a deeply innate sense of not being good enough.

Mars in Falwell's chart was in diplomatic Libra, but it was opposed by Uranus, the revolutionary. Mars (our aggressive urge) in Libra gave him the ability to work with others, but the pressure from Uranus on Mars tends to create a competitive and rebellious nature that is always fighting against something. Uranus seeks to break free of restrictions and destroy the established order, and Mars provides the energy to do so.

Mercury (the thought process and communication) in Falwell's chart makes no aspect to other planets which would add depth and dimension to his thinking. An unaspected Mercury shows a strong mental function, but it can also show a one-track mind that is not influenced by reasoning. Mercury in his chart is in Leo where it tends to be stubborn and prideful in one's opinions, and without aspects those opinions and ideas can become overly rigid since Leo is a fixed sign.

Saturn began a cycle of conjunctions to Falwell's Sun back in September and was exactly conjunct his Sun at the time of death. Chiron (representing the wounding and healing process) was also involved, having begun a transit over the Sun/Saturn opposition back in March.

We often see transits of Jupiter, the great Liberator, at the time of death and Falwell was no exception. Jupiter began a trine to Falwell's Sun back in March, and was retrograding back over his Sun at the time of death.

Regardless of what we think about Jerry Falwell, there is no denying that he said out loud what others only thought and therefore brought many issues out into the public arena for discussion, for better or worse.

Astrogate!!

Thanks to the Townleys for this delicious tidbit that comes from Sri Lanka:
It is history how [Ranil Wickremesinghe, prime minister] mislead the public when he signed the surrender agreement better known as the CFA. It took hours for some and days or years for the others to understand the true intentions of the signatories. Now we know that surrender does not tantamount to peace as peace comes essentially with law and order. . . .

Ranil did it again when he declared that he has a powerful raja yoga that would bring him back to power during April-May 2007. We didn’t need astrology to dispel his desperate claims to throne. However, the fact that he cannot be the national leader during this time is better known to him. Therefore, it is another case of attempting to mislead the public.

According to Ranil’s horoscope, he doesn’t have any planet exalted or in its own house, necessary for a great horoscope, thereby reducing any chance of the subject attaining greatness. However, Rahu and Ketu are in the same rasi and navamsa respectively giving them the status of power. Apart from these two, the subject has attained a very weak form of gaja-kesari yoga which may bring about prosperity, power, etc. However, the fact that both Moon and Jupiter (the curators of this yoga) are in detrimental rasis ensures that its good effects are reversed. Saturn is also in a rasi detrimental to him and to make things worse, Saturn is in retrograde! Misfortunes of this horoscope continues as Mars is combusted by a strong Sun; another very bad disposition, especially in relation to governance.
I confess I don't know much of this terminology since it has to do with Vedic astrology of which I know nothing, but I still find it hilarious that a politician has lied about his horoscope in order to gain political power!

Retail sales drop in April

poster by Shan Kelly

According to Yahoo News:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Sales by U.S. retailers fell 0.2 percent to a seasonally adjusted $372.03 billion in April as soaring gasoline prices and a slumping housing industry sapped consumers' appetite for spending, a Commerce Department report on Friday showed.

The report offered persuasive signs that the combined stress from costlier fuel and falling housing prices were turning consumers cautious - spending on building materials took the biggest tumble in more than four years and new-car sales fell by the largest amount since mid-2006.

Excluding automobiles that account for 20 percent of total retail business, sales were flat in April but that was following a 1.1 percent March increase.

The sales figures came in much weaker than Wall Street economists had forecast and will reinforce worry that consumers will have difficulty sustaining their spending punch that fuels two-thirds of national economic activity.

Total retail sales had been forecast to rise 0.4 percent, instead of decline, and sales excluding automobiles also had been predicted to gain 0.4 percent rather than being flat.

The 0.2 percent April sales drop contrasted with a 1 percent March gain. It was the first outright drop in monthly sales since last September when they fell 0.6 percent although total sales were flat in both January and last October.
The drop in retail sales corresponds precisely with the retrograde turn of both Jupiter and Pluto, both of which are in Sagittarius where they are irrationally and exuberantly expanding consumer confidence beyond all reason. In addition, Saturn has been trine Jupiter which adds a steadying hand to the profligate indulgence that Jupiter tends toward if we're not careful. Add to this the square from Jupiter to Uranus which brings surprising changes, a reversal is not all that unexpected.

I would expect this contraction to remain until the Saturn/Neptune opposition completes in June, and then when Jupiter turns direct in early August we are likely to have a final fervor of consumer confidence lasting perhaps until September when Saturn enters the cautious and security-minded sign of Virgo.

In October the final square from Jupiter to Uranus that could bring another reversal, not unexpected since October tends to be a difficult month for financial markets in any case.

Will Jennifer Aniston find love with Vince Vaughn?

Jennifer Aniston is a mystery to entertainment writers. Is she pining away for Brad Pitt? Will she get back together with Vince Vaughn? Let's see what the planets say about Jennifer Aniston's choices in men.

Jennifer's astrological chart reveals her to be a cool Aquarian (see earlier article for a more complete chart analysis), but with her Moon and Venus both in fire signs (Sagittarius Moon and Aries Venus) she has a passionate side to her nature. She is also extremely independent, as shown by the conjunction of Uranus (autonomy) to Jupiter (adventure) in her chart struggling in opposition to Venus, her desire to forge relationships with others. This dynamic can demonstrate commitment issues, and a difficult aspect (square) from Pluto to her Moon shows an intense emotional nature and fear (Pluto) of rejection. At the same time, Saturn (restriction) is conjunct Jennifer's Venus, revealing a basic lack of confidence in her own appeal to others.

[Click chart to enlarge] Vince has an Aries Sun, and his Sun sits right on Jennifer's Venus so it is no wonder they quickly became attracted to each other while filming The Breakup. In addition, their Moons are closely conjunct signifying emotional compatibility and understanding. And with their Mercurys in compatible signs they communicate well which is a keystone of any lasting relationship. Still, Vince has his own issues: he too his fiercely independent and rebellious with the planet of revolutionary behavior (Uranus) opposing his Sun. With four planets in Aries, he can be dominating and a bit boorish. Still, there is a part of him (Mars conjunct Saturn in Taurus) that wants to settle down and lead a relatively staid life of security and predictability. This sets up a conflict that can create commitment problems for Vince as well.

While their charts demonstrate a strong sense of familiarity and compatibility, it is clear that they push each other's buttons as well. Uranus in Vince's chart is opposite Jennifer's Venus and her Uranus opposes his Sun. These polarities reveal an excitement to their relationship and a sense of the unexpected, but also a difficulty in establishing stability and commitment. The fact that it is Vince's Uranus that is opposing Jennifer's Venus shows that Vince is the one who tends to run from commitment here. However, Jennifer's Saturn is conjunct Vince's Venus, which can often be a signal for a lasting partnership. This may cause Vince to feel like Jennifer is spoiling his party, but he also appreciates the sense of stability that she provides for him.

Because Vince and Jennifer's Moons are near the same degree of Sagittarius (depending on their time of birth), they will undergo planetary cycles to their Moon at the same time. Currently they are both undergoing a series of liberating transits from both Jupiter and Uranus to the Moon which is freeing them from emotional constraints but also making this a difficult time to make any commitments. It is unlikely that either of them will commit to anyone until well after these cycles are complete next year.

New Moon coming up!

The New Moon in Taurus occurs May 16 at 3:28 pm EST. Taurus craves nothing more than peace and stability, and a square from Neptune to the New Moon suggests that our fantasies and ideals (Neptune) exceed our acquisitive grasp (Moon). Neptune opens up our spirits to the creative force of divine inspiration and brings music and the arts, but the square reveals the possibility for too much of a good thing and the likelihood of losing oneself in one's imagination. In Taurus we are more easily able to ground our imagination and inspiration into more solid forms of art and life.

New Moons are usually excellent times to begin new projects; in Taurus these new projects will want to satisfy the Taurean longing for beauty in life as well as in possessions and property. The Taurus New Moon centers our focus on abundance and prosperity - fertility and fecundity are emphasized now. This is not a great time for travel or adventure, but rather to bloom where we are planted.

For women only

Since this is an astrology blog I feel I have to make a connection here so I'll file this under "where reality meets our illusions: the Saturn/Neptune opposition." Recent news reports cite a dropping breast cancer rate, and while these statistics were first linked to the sudden drop in the number of women taking hormone replacement thereapy, news reports now link the drop in breast cancer incidence to a corresponding drop in mammography rates.

The news articles suggest that the drop in breast cancer incidences must mean that there are simply fewer breast cancers found because fewer women are going for their annual mammograms. But what if there's a more insidious connection? What if, as I have always suspected, an annual dose of radiation is more likely to cause cancer than to cure it?

I am not a lone nut in thinking this. This well-sourced article points out:
Screening mammograms pose significant and cumulative risks of radiation-induced breast cancer for pre-menopausal women. The routine practice of taking 4 films of each breast each year results in approximately 1 rad (radiation absorbed dose) exposure, approximately 1,000 times greater than that from a chest x-ray.

The pre-menopausal breast is highly sensitive to radiation, with each 1 rad exposure increasing breast cancer risk by about 1%, which results in a cumulative 10% increased risk for each breast over a decade's screening. Furthermore, radiation risks are 4 times higher for the 1 to 2% of women who are silent carriers of the A-T ("ataxia-telangiectasia") gene.
A few years ago I was unable to find a doctor who support my desire to avoid so-called "hormone therapy," but a few years later my fears of hormones were justified. I have had two mammograms in 15 years and have refused to have more, and perhaps that fear will be justified as well. Every woman has to make their own decision where this is concerned, but let's watch the data carefully as the breast cancer rates continue to drop.

I'm back, and Mars/Pluto

I had a great weekend, and thanks to Dharmaruci and Melody for filling in while I was gone. I had an interesting experience in an attempt to get an astrology reading from a local astrologer who insisted to me that I was engaged in power struggles of the worst kind (Pluto is transiting my seventh house of partnerships) and that my relationships were in the toilet (Saturn is square Venus in my chart). It turned out that he was born during the same month of the same year as I was, and he insisted on looking at my chart as a mirror of his. Stuck in his own issues, he refused to see the possibilities of strength and growth inherent in these transits that could lift both of us out of a trap of power dramas and relationship hell. I gently suggested that perhaps it was he who should have the reading and gave him his $25.

Mars was square to Pluto yesterday, and I like how Melody puts it: The warrior energy of Mars clears the way at the cutting edge of our soul’s journey, and when in aspect to Pluto is a definite pitchfork in the butt push. So while these times can be challenging in general, they can also be very transmutative.

And thanks to Dharmaruci for connecting the dots of the Bush presidency to Saturn/Neptune:
We can therefore reasonably expect some big shift between now and [June when the Saturn/Neptune cycle concludes], which can only be politically disastrous for Bush, but which makes the Iraq policy much more realistic. The obvious starting point is the surge and its failure. Without his surge, Bush does not have a policy.

Still, we are seeing power struggles erupt into violence in Gaza and Pakistan under the square of Mars and Pluto, and less violently in the governmental bodies in the US. From the news:
  • As protests in Pakistan over the removal of a Judge by President Mushharraf become more violent, Pakistani soldiers are ordered to kill rioters on sight.
  • Violence erupted on election day in the Phillippines.
  • An increase of factional fighting between Hamas and Fatah members in the Gaza Strip resulted in the resignation of the Palestinian interior minister.
  • Hundreds of thousands of Turks showed up to protest the possibility of an Islamic government in their country.
And in weather, fires erupted (Mars/Pluto) in Florida, California, Georgia, Minnesota and Ontario, Arizona, Delhi, Boston, Baltimore, Malawi.

As I've said before, Mars in Pisces can operate in mysterious ways and in a couple of days when Mars enters its own sign of Aries its energy will be much more available and less prone to act out in ways that are less productive.

Saturn-Neptune: The Final Act

Dharmaruci writes:
If two or more outer planets are making an aspect to each other, particularly a hard aspect, then they become the defining configuration in the sky, the wider context in which all other planetary movements need to be seen. By and large. Because, for example, an outer planet moving into a new sign, like Pluto moving into Capricorn next year, is also pretty important.

The Saturn-Neptune opposition has been the defining configuration since late 2005, and particularly so since Aug 2006, when these planets made the first of 3 exact oppositions, the last of which will be on 25 June this year. At present, Neptune has come to a virtual standstill in the sky, and on the 24th May will turn round and slowly back into an opposition with Saturn.

So we are about to enter the final phase. Processes that began around last August with the first exact opposition, and that reflect Saturn-Neptune, will reach some sort of outcome next month. The two obvious political processes that have been described by Saturn-Neptune are the end of Tony Blair’s leadership in Britain, and in the USA the coming to terms with the reality of the Iraq War.

With major Neptune transits having characterised Tony Blair’s time in power, the final of the series, to Pluto (power) at 21 Leo, always looked like being the end of the road for him. I predicted it in early 2004, except I wasn't sure at what point in the transit it would occur. Now I know: while Saturn was in on his Pluto as well. It’s obvious with hindsight!

Tony Blair: 6 May 1953 6.10am Edinburgh Scotland.

Tony Blair as PM has always been Neptune: the unreal expectations of him, the visionary speeches, the spin, the lies, the refusal to face unwelcome truths, the self-deluding ‘sincerity’. Neptune has kept him in power. As Saturn has opposed Neptune, reality and limitation have crept in, the reality of Iraq, the limitations around what he can achieve, the limits to his time in power, and the actuality of his ‘legacy’, which he has been obsessed with, or at least the media has been obsessed with, like no other PM before him. But with Capricorn MC, what can you expect? And with natal Chiron conjunct that MC, he certainly managed, at the time of his Chiron Return, to damage that legacy over Iraq.

The Saturn-Neptune opposition has gone like clockwork for him. Around the first crossing on 31st August, Gordon Brown staged a sort of failed coup that forced Tony Blair to announce that he would be gone within a year. In the run-up to the 2nd crossing at the end of February, a new crisis around when he would go seemed to develop, things got confused, and the cash-for-honours probe was in the headlines. That passed and now, as Neptune stations, he has taken his final bow and announced his departure date: 27 June, 2 days after the 3rd and final crossing of Saturn and Neptune.

Gordon Brown began his campaign to be the next PM 2 days ago, and the speech that was in the news was the one in which his face was half covered by the autocue. Very appropriate for a man with Sun in the 12th House and in Pisces. As an astrologer, I see initial events as indicative of what is to come (like ‘first impressions’), and this doesn't look good. He has said that presentation isn’t such an important issue for him ("No kidding!" as one reporter said), but it is something no successful modern politician can do without. Saturn-Neptune has been lining up along his Mercury-Pluto opposition in Aquarius-Leo. The reality of this man is going to become a lot clearer in the coming weeks, and the trouble is that he’s a shoo-in whether or not we like what we see. The solar return chart for Labour in power is incredibly challenged this year, and it is not hard to see why, with the start that (in my opinion) Brown has got off to.

In the USA it is not so clear what the political outcome of the Saturn-Neptune opposition is going to be. The opposition began last Aug/Sept with intense pressure on the administration to acknowledge the reality (Saturn) of the Iraq situation, instead of continuing to present a picture that everyone knew was false (Neptune). The mid-term elections were coming up, and a political shift was necessary. And quite a lot of acknowledgement took place. Since then there has been a battle between Saturn and Neptune. Saturn has been the Democrat win in the elections, and the subsequent pressure on Bush to be more realistic. Neptune has been Bush’s continuing refusal to face the fact that Iraq is a lost cause, and his desperate attempt, through the ‘surge’ of troops in Baghdad, to salvage something.

It is increasingly clear that the surge is not working (whoever thought it would?) and the Democrats are gradually tightening the noose around Bush through placing limitations on the funding for Iraq. This went on for years with the Vietnam War, showing that it is not a simple matter for Congress to stop an unpopular war by withdrawing funding. Only the other day, for example, Congress rejected a bill that would have required the troops to be withdrawn within 9 months: you can’t necessarily just pull them out. So it is a complex situation.

In her blog of 10th May Nancy begins: “The confrontation with the White House is proceeding on many fronts: 11 Republican congressmen descending upon Bush to demand candor about the war..” To my mind, this is about Neptune (candour vs concealment) stationing, which intensifies a planet’s influence. We are about to have a new Neptune phase, and if even Bush’s own party are starting to put considerable pressure on him, it may be that we are starting to reach some sort of political end-game over Iraq.

All we see at the moment is the pressure on Bush and his battle with Congress, which theoretically could last a long time. We need, however, to bear in mind the astrology: the Saturn-Neptune opposition, which kicked in this political process last Aug/Sept, reaches a conclusion in 6 weeks time. We can therefore reasonably expect some big shift between now and then, which can only be politically disastrous for Bush, but which makes the Iraq policy much more realistic. The obvious starting point is the surge and its failure. Without his surge, Bush does not have a policy. ‘Lame-duck’ would not be the word for his Presidency if a lot more realism is forced upon him. But it may be forced on him, and sooner than we think. Watch this space!

It’s a feisty weekend sky

from Melody
This evening, Saturday, the Moon enters Aries until Monday morning. On Sunday, Mars in Pisces is exactly squaring Pluto in Sagittarius at 28 degrees – very near the Aries point. In fact, Mars will be moving into Aries on May 15th. The balsamic Aries Moon is squaring Venus in Cancer for a short while on Sunday morning and the Sun in Taurus is also exactly squaring Neptune in Aquarius at 22 degrees.

Happy Mothers Day!

Feelings are likely to be intense. There will be lots of energy, and very likely some relationship friction. But that’s all surface stuff and you have secret knowledge in your back pocket so that when irritations or tempers flare, yours or others, it will be easier to objectify and step back. That energy is always a sign that something needs to push through, so it’s an opportunity to stay aware and ask, what is it?

The warrior energy of Mars clears the way at the cutting edge of our soul’s journey, and when in aspect to Pluto is a definite pitchfork in the butt push. So while these times can be challenging in general, they can also be very transmutative.

Here in Boulder on Thursday, two suspicious characters in camouflage, one with a ski mask on and lurking in the early morning hours inside Boulder High School, brought out the swat team, FBI and an explosive sniffing dog. There was lots of noise, non-stop helicopters all day, as well as the following morning when the kids returned to school. It was drama, fear, frustration, steroids and testosterone, all focused on a collective fear that has been in the background since Columbine in 1999 and Bailey, Colorado in 2006.

Before the VA Tech incident, as the kids were returning from Spring break, there were also several incidences at Boulder High of graffiti and notes threatening that everyone would die on Thursday, April 19. They didn’t cancel school (although I asked my daughter to stay home that day – she is a part time student at Boulder High) and security was high. The day came and went, but not the undercurrent of tension and concern.

Mars one degree from a waxing square to Pluto this Thursday brought things to somewhat of a head with this latest incident. I was thinking at the time that it was a good thing, because Boulder is an intense place on the calmest of days, and this collective channeling of the Mars/Pluto energy into what thankfully did not get violent, cleared a lot of air. But the bigger question for us is where do we need to go from here? Where is our personal and collective soul taking us and perhaps what do we need to change, possibly through a strong and angry reaction, which brings us into greater alignment with what we really desire on the highest level.

Or maybe, like this photo taken by Jonathon Brown we can find our inner fire!

Watching what is going on in our city, society or the world at large in some ways will reflect the collective journey that we are all on. The late degrees of the mutable signs will be feeling the personal affects very strongly, possibly for the last week or so.

Tension and/or crisis is the way Mars leads us on this lower plane to the next level of inner power. The Sun in Taurus square Neptune with Venus in Cancer momentarily squaring the moon in Aries can also bring to our consciousness how our needs for security and society’s need for security can hold us back.

What changes do you need to make in your life as we begin a new cycle? Trust your inner celestial guidance! Don’t forget to look at what nurtures you and remember that change is the great constant in life. And through challenge and struggle we learn joy, compassion and unconditional acceptance of the journey and ourselves.

Prince William

Along with Melody, I’m standing in for Lynn while she has a short vacation. I’m from the UK and you can find my blog at astrotabletalk. As our Queen has just visited the US, and obliged George Bush to hold his first white tie dinner, I thought I’d say a few things about Prince William, her grandson and second in line to the throne. If he lives long enough, he will become King.

People in the UK are divided about the monarchy, but perhaps less than they think they are, because the attachment to it runs deep. I’m in favour of the monarchy, not because I ‘believe’ in it, but because I think it takes some of the weight of projection off the Prime Minister. It seems to be part of human nature that we collectively assign semi-divine qualities to certain people and then worship them – and celebrities catch a lot of this, which many of them are only too happy to do – so the more we can take this off our political leaders so that they can get on with the job of running the country, the better. Though the USA broke with Britain and its monarchy 231 years ago, some of its roots are still there, and we can see that in the ongoing level of interest in Princess Diana – and even in ‘Fergie’, the ex-wife of Prince Andrew, who managed to get her own TV show in the USA.

Prince William is 24 years old and currently in the army, with which the Royal family has strong links. Before that he was at university for 4 years, where in 2003 he began a relationship with Kate Middleton, that lasted until a few weeks ago. It seems to have been him that ended the relationship. She was always portrayed as this straightforward middle-class girl who just happened to have met up with William at university, and for the last year or two the media had been endlessly predicting an engagement.

About a month ago I read a magazine article about her background. It wasn’t a critical article, but I found it revealing. Her family are well-off and live in Berkshire, near London. They have a mail order business. It turns out that her younger sister has been going out with a ‘wealthy aristocrat’ and shares a flat with a son of the Duke of Northumberland and a son of the Duke of Roxburghe. The Middleton family are also applying to have a coat of arms. In this light, Kate’s involvement with Prince William doesn’t look so innocent. Nor does her decision to attend St Andrew’s University, all the way up in Scotland, where Prince William just happened to be going. Her previous relationship just happened to end at a point where William was single, and it was probably a case of “He chased her until she caught him.”

Not that any of this was probably very conscious in her, young as she was. Kate Middleton was born on 9 January 1982 (no birth time), and what is screaming out from the chart is Sun in Capricorn square to Saturn-Pluto, and quite possibly making a t-square with Moon in Cancer. This woman thinks hierarchically through and through, a high social position is very important to her. And important to her family. She didn’t want to marry William, she wanted to marry a Prince, and she thought she’d landed one. Not that she would have seen it like that. She was also no doubt doing exactly what her family wanted and expected her to do, without anything needing to be said. Since university she seems to have fiddled around in London, having recently taken up a pseudo-job through family connections, but in reality waiting for her real goal to unfold: marriage to the Prince. Kate's chart also suggests the possibility of real achievement, rather than the mere pursuit of status, so you never know, this knock-back might change something for her.

So it may be that William has had a lucky escape, even though he might not yet see it like this, and the experience may help him avoid the mistake his father made in marrying Diana: Charles was under pressure to produce an heir, and Diana was aged 20 and clueless (like many of us at that age) about what she was doing.

Prince William was born on 21 June 1982 at 21.03 in London, England. His chart is striking, with a Sun-Moon conjunction in Cancer on the Gemini Desc opposite Neptune Rising in Sag. With this chart, William will have unusual abilities to involve himself with others in a compassionate and nurturing way. Relationships with others, whether with a big or small ‘R’, will be central to him, they will be how he comes to know himself. With Jupiter on the Midheaven trining his Sun (a charmed aspect for a King), he will probably be very popular and loved by the people – “the people’s prince”, in the way that Tony Blair called his mother "the people’s princess" after she was killed. Like his mother, he has Sun in Cancer and Sag Rising, and he will have the burden of being not just William but also Diana’s son, Diana resurrected.

This is pointing to his Neptune Rising, which may make it difficult for people to see him as he is. Amongst other things, they will see Diana. And while his Sun-Moon in the 7th will on the one hand be his path to self-knowledge, Neptune Rising is also saying that he can lose himself in his ability to involve and give himself to others.

The next few years will be defining for him, as Pluto first crosses his ASC (this year) then opposes his Sun (next year) and then opposes his Moon (2010). We don’t yet have much idea of who William is – and nor does he, probably – but we certainly will in a few years time. It is not the chart of a soldier (unlike his younger brother Harry - see my posting of 1st May - who has Sun in the 8th square Mars in Sag), so he probably won’t stay in the army for very long. What William HAS been good at so far is staying out of the public eye (relatively speaking) and leading as normal a life as he can before he is drawn into public life: he clearly has some idea how to use his Neptune Rising to his advantage, as a cloak of invisibility.

Prince William was also born on an eclipse. Eclipses occur in series, known as Saros Series, that run for up to around 1400 years. The first eclipse in the cycle sets the character for the whole cycle, so Prince William’s life will reflect this first eclipse, which occurred on June 24 792AD at 6.03 GMT. This chart has a Sun-Moon conjunction (naturally) at 6 Cancer, close to William’s Sun-Moon conjunction at 0 – 5 Cancer, emphasising William’s connection to this series.

In her interpretation of the chart for this series, Bernadette Brady says: “This is a difficult eclipse family, as its members bring unfortunate news concerning friendships or relationships [me: or family - Cancer]. You will be dealing with ideas of separation or the ending of a union. However, although the picture may look quite glum as the eclipse takes effect, the actual results are quite positive. You will quickly grasp what has to be done and fast action can bring quick results. The theme of this eclipse is action concerning personal relationships.”

The aspects Brady uses for her interpretation are: Sun-Moon-Jupiter conjunct Mars/Uranus midpoint; and Mercury conjunct Venus/Saturn midpoint.

The death of his mother Diana in 1997 indicates that Prince William is indeed connected to this eclipse series, and we may see it in action again if his brother Harry goes to Iraq, which any good astrologer would advise him against. (Listen, Harry!) Next year not only does William have transiting Pluto opposing his family-oriented Cancer Sun, but Pluto will also be squaring his 3rd House cusp – siblings – at 0 Aries.

This Saros Series is coming to an end. It began in 792, around the time of what was arguably the beginning of the British monarchy (King Ecgberht in 802 AD). It will end in 2036, when William is 54 years old, and the monarchy as we know it may end around then, particularly if we consider the interpretation given above for the series (“ending of a union.”) On the other hand, the eclipse chart also suggests the ability to “quickly grasp what has to be done and fast action can bring quick results.” So William may successfully adapt to the changes.

I have taken my eclipse material from Brady’s ‘The Eagle and the Lark’, published in 1992 by Weiser.

Supernova!!

Just as Jupiter squared Uranus this week, scientists reported Monday that they had witnessed the brighest supernova ever seen as a massive star, 150 times bigger than our Sun, blew itself up 240 million light years away. This event forced scientist back to the drawing board to understand how stars die since it was previously thought that the demise of a star would pull them into a black hole. The star's death produced a huge thermonuclear explosion that spewed star material into space.

The amount that we don't know about the universe we live in is staggering. Discoveries such as this which explode the current scientific paradigm (Jupiter/Uranus) also serve to open our minds to new possibilities of the world in which we live.

Astrology and Sacred Geometry

Planets and signs are just a small facet of the astrological mandala - the geometry of the relationships between the planets is the factor that deepens our understanding of the unique individual that bears a particular birthchart. The angles that the planets make to each other describe the way the functions represented by those planets interact and create a completely unique energy imprint on our personality.

The traditional (or Ptolemaic) angles in the birthchart include what I call the "3-series" because they divide the chart into thirds: sextiles (60 degrees) and trines (120 degrees), and what I call the "4-series" because they divide the chart into fourths: of squares (90 degrees) and oppositions (180 degrees). These basic aspects give us triangles of all kinds as well as hexagons - they also create rectangles and half-squares. The geometry of the birthchart is all contained within a circle, one of the most sacred symbols of all.

Ursi has posted a link to a site on sacred geometry that reminded me of an article I wrote last year about Jung, "squaring the circle" and alchemical transformation:

When the points of a triangle are connected they form a circle, and circles have long been associated with the heavens, the infinite and the creative spark of divine consciousness. The square is associated with the manifest earth - finite and able to be grasped with the human mind. The alchemical process seeks to transmute that which is finite and earthbound (lead) into something divine (gold), and in alchemical psychology and transformation astrology we seek to transmute the challenges and burdens that keep us locked into an existence of habit and compulsion into divine gifts that open the doors to greater self-awareness and higher levels of understanding.
The circumnambulation Jung describes, the process of “squaring the circle” or “circling the square” has an uncertainty built into the journey: do we ever achieve individuation or is it a goal that is ever just out of reach? It is important to take the path that the mandala represents, to revolve around the center, to rotate near and around the center, and hopefully, move towards the self.. As Jung remarks “… the self is our life’s goal, for it is the completest expression of that fateful combination we call individuality…” [article by C. Clogston]

Planetary news this week

On May 10 the square of Jupiter to Uranus reaches the apex of the second phase of its cycle. Jupiter expands and exaggerates the urge for Uranus to create radical change and break down the status quo, and we've seen this since the cycle began back in January. On a global level this planetary configuration stimulates conflicts between religious and ethnic groups, and on an individual level the effect may be more subtle. Suddenly we feel dissatisfied and impatient with those with whom we agreed last year. We want new ways of looking at the world, we want to live our lives in a different way that more authentically fulfills the person we think we are NOW.

Jupiter right now is softening the challenge of the Saturn/Neptune opposition by adding an expansive quality of optimism and faith. Saturn, the force of discipline and restriction, is still trine to Jupiter, lending a stabilizing force to our desire for expansion that Jupiter/Uranus evokes. Saturn says "make sure you've packed your lunch before you go on that interdimensional journey."

In addition Neptune, the force that urges us to dissolve our material reality and reach for an experience of the divine, makes a sextile to Jupiter which adds a note of creativity and pulls together our spirituality (Neptune) and our personal theology (Jupiter). The interplay between the Jupiter/Uranus square and the Saturn/Neptune opposition offers a relatively stable environment where change and growth can take place in a more organic way.

This cycle continues through October but is most pressing now, particularly with the addition of Mars which is approaching a square to Pluto (exact May 13) where it brings up power conflicts and other battles of the ego. The square from Mars to Pluto will be particularly challenging for those of us with planets at the last degrees of the mutable signs (Sagittarius, Virgo, Pisces, Gemini).

Mercury enters Gemini on the 11th, quickening our minds and increasing our curiosity and our attention to the world around us. As Mars reaches the exact square to Pluto on May 13 we could find ourselves in a battle of wills that plays out verbally rather than physically as Mercury in Gemini accentuates the field of communication. This is Mother's Day, so watch for old power conflicts with Mom to surface!

As with any difficult Mars event, the energy of a battle between Mars and Pluto can be difficult to handle. Vigorous physical exercise is a good way to release excess energy but we will also need to give expression to anger over issues where our needs (Mars) are not being met or being blocked (Pluto). Mars is still in Pisces at this time where it tends to operate in ways that are more hidden or passive-aggressive. When Mars enters Aries on May 15 these issues become a little easier to deal with as they move out into the open. Mars in Aries relishes a good battle and isn't afraid of confrontation.

Saturn and changing gender roles

Phil Brown has a great post today on the shift in how we perceive Saturn based on the change in parental roles:
Capricorn has a broad range of meanings, one of which has to do with the parent or persons of authority. Capricorn's ruler, Saturn, plus the 10th house are often associated with the individual father. However, the whole issue of assigning a parental gender to planets and luminaries is problematic in modern culture, where shifting gender roles have made such designations outmoded. The Sun may be our Jungian animus, and the Moon our anima, but do they really represent the parental father and mother?

Many older astrology texts refer to Saturn, the ruler of Capricorn, as representing the father. Saturn rules boundaries, authority, and rules—all qualities which are traditionally associated with the old-fashioned father. But don’t mothers also set boundaries, lay down rules, and become authority figures in their children’s lives?
read more here...

Saturn is the natural ruler of the tenth house which is associated with Capricorn, with the Moon as the natural ruler of the fourth house which belongs to Cancer. The Cancer/Moon archetype has traditionally been associated with the mother, who stays at home and cares for the children, with Capricorn/Saturn being seen as the father who works out in the world and creates the structures that support the family. Obviously, with the gender roles shifting as they have in the past fifty years, the whole question of parental identification in the birthchart shifts as well. We have single parent households, in which the mother could play Saturn and the Moon could be more independent and not affiiated with either parent. Or we may have a grandmother playing the Moon role in the chart, with Saturn gone missing and acted out through a celebrity role model instead.

Phil makes a good point that some of the hard and fast rules of the older astrology texts no longer apply in today's changing world. We can no longer rely on rules to help us interpret a chart or to predict the future. It's important now that we fully understand the archetype that underlies each astrological symbol so that this understanding can carry us into the new wave of awareness and provide a useful tool for growth. Afflicted planets, malefic planets, planets in detriment - these old rules hold us back.

With Pluto getting ready to travel through Capricorn, perhaps these old rules and structures on which astrologers have depended will undergo the kind of transformation that we'll see in other Capricornian structures as well!

Science and Presentiment

According to the Queen in Through the Looking Glass, "It's a poor sort of memory that only works backwards."

An article in the UK's Daily Mail reveals that many scientists are beginning to accept what many of us have always known (bits snipped from this excerpt):
Do some of us avoid tragedy by foreseeing it? Some scientists now believe that the brain really CAN predict events before they happen.

Professor Brian Josephson, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist from Cambridge University, says: "So far, the evidence seems compelling. What seems to be happening is that information is coming from the future.

"In fact, it's not clear in physics why you can't see the future. In physics, you certainly cannot completely rule out this effect."

Virtually all the great scientific formulae which explain how the world works allow information to flow backwards and forwards through time - they can work either way, regardless.

Shortly after 9/11, strange stories began circulating about the lucky few who had escaped the outrage. It transpired that many of the survivors had changed their plans at the last minute after vague feelings of unease. It was a subtle, gnawing feeling that 'something' was not right. Nobody vocalised it but shortly before the attacks, people started altering their plans out of an unspoken instinct.

One woman suffered crippling stomach pain while queuing for one of the ill-fated planes which flew into the World Trade Center. She made her way to the lavatory only to recover spontaneously. She missed her flight but survived the day. Amid the collective outpouring of grief and horror it was easy to overlook such stories or write them off as coincidences.

But in fact, these kind of stories point to an interesting and deeper truth for those willing to look.

If, for example, fewer people decided to fly on aircraft that subsequently crashed, then that would suggest a subconscious ability to divine the future. Well, strange as it seems, that's just what happens.

Although these premonitions are not in glorious Technicolor, they are often emotionally powerful enough for us to act upon them. In technical parlance it is known as 'presentiment' because emotional feelings are being received from the future, not hard facts or information.

The military has long been fascinated by such phenomena. For many years the US military (and latterly the CIA) funded a secretive programme known as Stargate, which set out to investigate premonitions and the ability of mediums to predict the future. Dr Dean Radin worked on the Stargate programme and became fascinated by the ability of 'lucky' soldiers to forecast the future.

These are the ones who survived battles against seemingly impossible odds. Radin became convinced that thoughts and feelings - and occasionally-actual glimpses of the future - could flow backwards in time to guide soldiers. It helped them make life-saving decisions, often on the basis of a hunch.

If we are all regularly sensing the future or occasionally receiving glimpses of it, as some mediums claim to do, then doesn't that mean we can change the future and render the 'prediction' obsolete? Could such science fiction have a grain of truth in it after all? The emerging view, Bierman explains, is that 'the future has implications for the past'.

"This phenomena allows you to make a decision on the basis of what will happen in the future. Does that restrain our free will? That's up to the philosophers. I'm far too shallow a person to worry about that."

The problem with presentiment is that it appears so nebulous that you can't rely on it to make reliable decisions. That may be the case, but there are plenty of instances where people wished they had listened to their premonitions or feelings of presentiment.

So should we listen to our instincts, hunches and dreams? Some experts believe we may already be using them in our everyday lives to a surprising degree. Dr Jessica Utts at the University of California, who has worked for the US military and CIA as an independent auditor of its paranormal research, believes we are constantly sampling the future and using the knowledge to help us make better decisions. "I think we're doing it all the time," she says. "We've looked at the data and it does seem to happen."

We don't always listen to the voices that guide us because we don't trust them; not knowing where they come from we tend to disregard them as fantasy or mere thoughts. Quieting the mind and being present in the moment is a skill that takes time to learn, but in becoming more present with ourselves we become more attentive to what goes on inside of us as well as around us. It has long been known that animals are aware of severe weather events before humans are; before the Tsunami hit a few years ago the animals had already left for higher ground.

Keeping a journal can be a good way to clarify messages that come through our intuition or dreams. Once we develop a habit of listening to the voice of guidance within us, a world of synchronicity and magic opens up. This is not to say that we will successfully avoid tragedy, but the flow of our lives becomes easier and more magical as we learn to tune in to our own internal guidance. Whether it comes from the future, as these scientists suggest, or from the wisdom of our higher selves, that guidance is a gift.

Beltane and Wesak - a Taurus Fiesta

(A portion of this article is reprinted from an earlier post)

In ancient Celtic times, the wheel of the year was honored as the turning of the seasons. In the northern hemispheres, the winter solstice was the shortest day of the year and represented the return of the light, and the summer solstice, being the longest day of the year, was the Celtic fire festival. The equinoxes represented the points of balance when day and night were of equal length: the vernal equinox represented planting and fertility, and the autumnal equinox was the time of harvest. (Southern hemisphere civilizations had their own traditions of marking the seasons which obviously were very different than in the north.)

Halfway between these solar events are the "cross-quarter" days, the times of magic. Still celebrated today for their imaginal power, these were the periods when the Sun was at the midpoint of the fixed signs: Taurus, Scorpio, Leo and Aquarius. In the astrological wheel, the cardinal signs of initiation are followed by the fixed signs of stability, which are followed in turn by the mutable signs of adaptation. So we have cardinal Aries at the Vernal equinox (in tropical astrology), followed by fixed Taurus at the cross-quarter, which precedes mutable Gemini. Cancer begins the summer solstice, followed by Leo at the cross-quarter, which precedes Virgo, and so it goes around the wheel.

Each of these "triplicities" as they are called has a different energy. The cardinal signs demonstrate leadership, they initiate action, each in its own way according to its element (fire, water, earth and air). The fixed signs are stable, rooted, grounded. In many ways they are the most powerful because they don't blow off steam like the cardinal signs, and they are not tempted to lose themselves through adaptability like hte mutable signs can. The ancient Celtic peoples found the mid-point of the fixed signs to be magical and called them the "Gates of Power." The first "Gate of Power" in the year occurs in the mid-point of Taurus, which technically does not occur until May 6.

The ancient Celts called the first cross-quarter festival Beltane, from the ancient word for "bright fire" which honored the god Bel, the god of solar light. On the eve of Beltane, bonfires were lit throughout the land to invoke protection for the crops and farm animals for the coming year. Beltane was a fertility festival, and marriage vows were often lifted for just one night. The dance around the Maypole is a clearly phallic symbol calling for fruitful fields and families.

In the middle ages, Mayday became a time for the craft guild to celebrate the patrons of their craft, and later trade societies and then unions celebrated Mayday as their holiday. May 1st later became the holiday of trade unions after a general strike and riot in Chicago resulted in the establishment of the eight hour workday which is now commemorated by International Workers Day on May 1.

The first Full Moon in May, which occurred just a few days ago, is also honored by some Buddhist traditions as the Wesak festival which celebrates either Buddha's birth, death, or the time at which he became enlightened. Wesak is traditionally celebrated according to the Chinese lunar calendar as the Full Moon of the Fourth Month. However, the World Fellowship of Buddhists in 1950 passed a resolution requesting heads of governments to standardize the celebration in the Full Moon in the month of May. This is complicated in 2007 by the fact that there are two Full Moons in May, the second of which corresponds to the fourth month in the Chinese calendar.

Regardless of what we celebrate and how, both of these celebrations fall in the month of Taurus where the Earth can be celebrated as a living deity. Although Venus is the traditional ruler of Taurus, I personally look at Earth as a more appropriate ruler of Taurus, which is associated with the pleasures and riches of our planet. Beltane is the Celebration of Bel, the god of light, and Wesak is the festival of light. Let us this weekend honor the light that resides within us that shows us the way, the light that resides in those around us so that we may respect and honor every living being, and the light of the earth and the Sun that feeds and sustains us.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers and the Saturn Return

Jonathan Rhys Meyers, currently starring as Henry VIII in Showtime TV's "The Tudors," recently checked himself into a rehab center at the age of 29 - smack in the middle of his Saturn return.

Meyers is an interesting actor - he has a sneering intensity that reveals his background as a bit of a punk as well as blazing if androgynous good looks and startlingly blue eyes. Born and raised in Ireland, his father left the family at an early age and some sources say that he spent some time in an orphanage because his mother was unable to care for the whole family. He was first spotted by a casting agent in a pool hall where he spent much of his time after being expelled from school. An advertising campaign attracted attention and shortly thereafter he was cast in a small role in the film, "A Man with No Importance." After auditioning with Neil Jordan for the film "Michael Collins," Jordan noted that he "[came] into the casting session with alarming certainty" and was obviously very gifted (source IMDB database).

Meyers was born with the Sun in Leo, the sign of royalty. It is no surprise that Meyers' major roles have included playing Elvis the King and King Henry VIII of England! Leo's quest is to celebrate the Self from within, to achieve a generosity of spirit that is not dependent upon outward acclaim. Like all Sun signs, Leo individuals do not always master this quest right away and instead spend much of their lives in dependency upon the attention and adoration of others until they are able to achieve a healthy expression of the ego. The Leo Sun exhibits confidence and independence, with a strong will and generous spirit. Like the Lion for which they are named, they are born leaders and typically very charismatic. Meyers is no exception to this description although his Leo Sun is colored by some challenging influences from other planets.

Meyers' Sun is exactly squared (90 degre angle) by Chiron, the archetype of the Wounded Healer. The Sun represents the physical heart, and Meyers was born with a heart condition fitting perfectly into the drama expressed by the square of Chiron to the Sun. This challenging aspect identifies an early wound to his essential Self as represented by the Sun, and since the Sun often signifies the father in the birthchart, it shows that this wound likely came from the father or a father figure in his life. Meyers has said that the scars on his face came from accidents as a child when he fell off of chairs, but this is a typical excuse of abused children and hints of darker incidents in his early family life.

Meyers' Sun is also squared by Uranus, the planet of rebellion and authenticity. This configuration puts pressure on the individual to express their own identity in the most revolutionary way possible; to open new doors and continually reinvent themselves. Uranus is unpredictable and in challenging aspect to the Sun often describes a rebellious relationship with authority figures. There is an impulsive nature and a fierce resistance to rules and to being controlled in any way. On the other hand, the intuition and instincts of the Sun/Uranus combination is very strong and provides a powerful guidance for these individuals.

Chiron and Uranus, both square to the Sun in Meyers' chart, are therefore opposite each other by 180 degrees. We call this a "T-square" because of the shape the three planets form in a chart. The opposition of Chiron and Uranus creates difficulty in the nervous system and can indicate a person who has trouble channeling their emotions in a positive way. There can be anxiety and general emotional discomfort, and it is not unusual for these individuals to seek an outlet through drugs or drinking, particularly at an early age. This aspect is also very common in the charts of healers who, having found balance in their internal energy system find that they are able to promote healing in others through various modalities. For Meyers, with both Chiron and Uranus in stressful aspect to his Sun, he has had a difficult time finding himself and feeling comfortable in his own skin.

Meyers' Moon is in the adventurous sign of Sagittarius, indicating a love of travel and expansive experiences, and it is opposed by a conjunction of Venus and Jupiter which indicates that his expectations (Jupiter) are larger than what he feels he really deserves (Moon). For this reason he may always feel somewhat dissatisfied and may give of himself too freely. The opposition between the Moon and Venus shows a tendency for emotional conflict in relationships.

The Venus/Jupiter conjunction in this chart falls in Gemini which reflects Meyers' somewhat androgynous appearance and attitudes. He has expressed appreciation for male beauty as well as female, and he was "adopted" at the age of 14 by a farmer he calls his "gay dad." Gemini is a sign that is very curious and enjoys trying on different roles and personalities, and it is not unusual for someone with a strong Gemini influence to be bisexual although this is by no means a rule.

Meyers has a history of aggression; he and his then girlfriend were arrested for assaulting each other back in 2005 although he later said it was just a shouting match. But this is not the chart of a violent individual - Mars is in Gemini, where it is much more likely to express anger verbally than physically, and his Mars makes a trine (harmonious aspect) to Pluto where it adds intensity and power and an ability to channel his anger through productive means. However, the Sun/Chiron/Uranus T-square is a painful dynamic and together with the insecurity of the Moon/Venus/Jupiter combination we see a touchy and very emotional individual who does not have a natural way to channel these emotions when pressed.

The Saturn Return occurs when Saturn, traveling through the sky in orbit around the Sun, returns to the same degree as Saturn in the birthchart. It is the best of times and the worst of times - it's the time when we are forced to relinguish the gratification of our ego for the sake of achievement in the material world. This can lead to great success following a period of hard work, and it can also bring endings and painful challenge. For Meyers the Saturn return has brought both. Saturn first returned to its place in his birthchart last September when Saturn was opposing Neptune in the sky. Saturn builds form and Neptune dissolves it, so this dual pressure can be very difficult to manage especially when combined with the inherent difficulties in the Saturn Return. While his career was building (he was chosen as the face of Versace, given the lead role in "The Tudors," and cast in two major films all at the same time), Neptune was eroding his confidence and sense of self.

The second phase of Meyers' Saturn Return came just as Meyers entered rehab. Saturn can feel like a vise which applies slow but steady pressure until we finally either surrender or seek release in some other way. In this case, transiting Saturn was pressuring Meyers' natal Saturn for several months and it is no surprise that he needed a break. The Saturn Return can be difficult, but it builds depth and strength of character as we face the challenges that are offered to us.

The film industry is difficult for individuals who have never developed a healthy ego and sense of self that arises from a relationship with one's own self. Film stars are always looking in a fun house mirror and never really have the chance to see themselves in that medium. There is an enormous amount of talent and raw creative power in this chart, and hopefully he will be able to utilize this time to deepen his own self-understanding so that he can truly realize his great potential.

The astrological symbolism of Ceres

Empress card from the Sharman-Caselli tarot deck

The traditional astrological symbolism of Ceres has not really worked for me and I'm finding it not to be useful now that the importance of Ceres has been promoted with her reclassification as a "dwarf planet" along with Pluto. Some of the interpretations assigned to Ceres by astrologers are these:
Ceres in the horoscope shows the early nurturing we received and how we nurture others. It also directly rules food and clothing. I have seen two cases of professional designers who had Ceres aspecting Pallas (which rules the ability to see patterns). Ceres in the Houses shows where we are most likely to express our nurturing side and also where we can best receive nurturing. (astrologer Bob Marks)
* * * * * *
The Ceres asteroid represents the rhythms in a woman's procreation cycles. In her role as mother, the Ceres woman treasures family heirlooms. The biology of life cycles and female passages are within Ceres' domain. The asteroid, in charge of mothering and the family tree, rules the blossoming of a young girl's body into womanhood. Eating disorders that result when a woman resists this entrance into fertility also have their place under Ceres' skirts. (Astrology.com)
* * * * * *
In astrological delineation, we can look to her for very specific information about matters relating to food and nurturing, and where the two meet. She can represent the quality of nurturing we got as a child, and how we function (or don't) as nurturers in our relationships. (astrologer Eric Francis)
* * * * * *

The problem for me with these definitions is that they are either too oriented towards female psychology, in which case Ceres has no use for half of the human population, or the definition is too similar to that of the Moon. The Moon already symbolizes how we were nurtured - it shows our instinctive reactions. It shows what we need to feel cared for and how we care for others. While it's true that food is a big part of nurturing, this did not seem to me to be an adequate description of Ceres who has now been reclassified along with Pluto as a major catalyst for transformation.

Each of the outer planets serves as a "higher octave" for the more personal planets. The term "higher octave" means that there is a higher, or more transformative and transpersonal, expression of the more individualized energy of the personal planets. For example, Neptune, associated with universal love, is said to be the higher octave of Venus which rules individual love. Uranus, ruling insight and discovery, is the higher octave of Mercury's communication process.

As I work with Ceres more in personal readings, it is becoming more clear to me that Ceres acts as the higher octave of the Moon. WIth Ceres the emotional security of the Moon is transmuted to a sustenance and nurturing of our spiritual security and sense of place on Planet Earth. As we become more disconnected with the Earth and our sense of the natural rhythms and cycles of the seasons, we lose touch with a part of our own internal being. This can create a desperate sense of spiritual starvation within us as we stuff ourselves with bioengineered food that is loaded with chemicals that leaves us feeling undernourished and thirsty for a life that has meaning.

In mythology, Ceres was the goddess of plenty - the bearer of fruits and grain that nourished the world. But on the dark side, her grief over her lost daughter caused her to roam throughout the world, ignoring the crops and causing devastation and famine everywhere she went. For this reason, I believe that Ceres is associated with prosperity and abundance. Jupiter signifies the optimism and sense of meaning in life that brings about an abundant life, but Ceres represents the actual bounty - the foods, the flowers, the birds and plants, and the desperation that results when the bounty is withdrawn.

I am beginning to look at Ceres as the place in our chart that connects us to our natural selves. Difficult aspects to Ceres show challenges to our ability to feel safe in our bodily incarnation and denote areas where we need to make a more direct effort to honor the rhythms of nature and to feed and nourish ourselves. On a more global level she reminds us that without a connection to nature we cannot as a species survive.

Each of the planets demand a burden from us and bestow a gift, and where the burden of Ceres is a spiritual starvation, the gift she bestows is likely a sense of peace and beauty in the truth of the physical world that surrounds us.

Egypt and the Lunar Return

Art by Nancy Bright

Looking ahead to my own progressed Lunar Return (when the progressed Moon returns to its place in the birthchart), I found this great article called "Cycles within Cycles."

Often we think of a planetary event like the Saturn Return (when transiting Saturn returns to its place in the birthchart) or the Uranus square or opposition. But in reality each cycle is a dance that opens channels of awareness, preparing us for the next dance. The second Saturn Return at age 56-58 is follows shortly by the closing square of Uranus to its natal place, resulting in a shedding of the calcified personality that Saturn has eroded and the emergence of a newly restored exhilaration. What is less well-known is the doorway created by the Progressed Lunar return which takes place shortly before each Saturn return, approximately every 27 years.
Saturn is the Lord of Discipline. He cut off his father Uranus' genitals and flung them into the sea. The waters were fertilized, and Aphrodite sprang from the foam. This simple story is very reflective of the Saturn return. Something that seems very valuable must be sacrificed in order for something beautiful to be born. Saturn was not just severing his father's genitals: he was removing him from his entrenched place of power, dispersing his fertility and power to other things and relegating him to his place in Heaven where he belonged. Likewise in the Saturn return, one must sever one's self from what is unnecessary so that energy can be released and utilized for something better, no matter how painful the process. Uranus is thus known as the Father of the Heavens, his wife Gaia the Earth.

Those who follow Egyptian mythology will know these archetypes as Nuit and Geb. Saturn can be seen as a duality of Ra and Thoth by following Plutarch's version of the birth of Nuit's children. In its rigid, unchanging form, Saturn is Ra: he sealed up his Mother's womb so that Horus could not be born, thinking he could rule forever and evade prophecy. However, Thoth played a trick on him and added 5 days to the end of the calendar (representing the symbolic difference between a calendar year and a lunar year), henceforth allowing Nuit's other children, Osiris, Isis, Horus, Set, and Nephthys to be born since Ra was not paying attention. A Saturn return can be very much like this. Change may be resisted and self-deception attempted despite knowing full well what must occur or be done. But sooner or later, the true nature of the situation must be shown allowing growth to occur.

The Lunar influence of a Saturn return is not an accident. Just prior to one's Saturn return, which occurs around age 29 1/2, one experiences their Progressed Lunar Return. . . . When [the Moon] comes back, you are able to integrate all of the emotional information that you have been collecting for the last 28 or so years into a cohesive working whole. Emotional issues that were confusing before suddenly become clear. You will need this clarity in the next couple of years.

This scenario is again reflective of the duality of Ra and Thoth, or the Sun and the Moon in classical Egyptian mythology. Ra, the Sun or Saturn, is blinded by his power and refuses to relinquish, though he knows very well that it has been foreseen that Horus will overtake his power eventually. Thoth, the Moon, is a reflection of Ra. In his pale silvery light he is able to see what Ra will not, and subsequently trick his brother into doing what must be done: the true face of Saturn. The Moon offers one the perspective one needs in order to see through some of the rigidity Saturn displays, especially when its power is threatened.

As I stated before, Saturn is the Lord of Discipline. Just as the Moon has been busy collecting emotional information for the last 29 years, so has Saturn been collecting constructive information about what works in one’s life and what doesn't. When Saturn reaches its natal point in one's chart, that same completeness that the Moon enabled with one's emotions is triggered in one's sense of order and discipline. This knowledge in mind, Saturn begins getting rid of anything it doesn't need. . . .

I like the poetry of this connection between the Moon and Saturn and find it very illustrative of the Saturn Return process that is so often feared.

Scorpio Full Moon! And other planetary news

From Skywatch for May, posted this morning:
There are two Full Moons in May, the first of which is on May 2 at 6:10 am EST in Scorpio. Scorpio is the sign of intensity and passion, the impulse that pulls us into the deepest part of our soul and forces us to experience life in the most profound way possible. The Full Moon occurs when the Moon opposes the Sun, and although the Sun illuminates the Moon it is the lunar consciousness that prevails. Emotions run higher during the Full Moon, and we have greater access to the underworld of our psyche with the Full Moon in Scorpio.

This Full Moon incorporates a conjunction of Mercury to the Sun, suggesting that our emotions will be at odds with our thoughts and mental functioning during this period. There is also a square to Chiron which opens up doorways for old wounds that we thought were healed long ago to surface and remind us that we are not yet completely healed. A wide square to the Full Moon opposition from Saturn hints that we may find ourselves feeling isolated and alone as we face the wounds from our past that Chiron presents. This is a good time for introspection and personal work, and the inclusion of Mercury suggests that journaling or talking to a friend can be quite productive now.

Mercury is approaching a square to Chiron now that culminates on May 4 and we are likely to continue feeling the effects of Chiron's efforts to promote healing of our mental faculties by clearing out the old wounds that we harbor within us. Fortunately, harmonious aspects from Mercury to Saturn and Uranus aid us in achieving stability (Saturn) and offering insights (Uranus) that help us through the healing process that continues through the first week in May.

Jupiter has been within a degree of a trine to Saturn for the past month or so. This is the second phase of this Jupiter/Saturn cycle, and it reaches the exact degree of that trine on May 6. This is a wonderful dynamic that connects the endurance of Saturn with the optimism of Jupiter; it facilitates the spiraling effect of growth and keeps us from unraveling under the simultaneous influence of a square of Jupiter to Uranus which accelerates our growth but which lacks sensibility and practicality. The trine of Jupiter to Saturn is a long-term event that will continue into 2008.

George Bush: A Look Ahead

Ever since George Bush began the debacle known as the Iraq War he has been going through a series of problematic planetary cycles that have put him under tremendous pressures and forced confrontations with many of his friends and associates. You can read more about the overall State of the President in this article from January which has links to previous posts as well.

Transiting Saturn is still putting pressure on Venus in his chart, showing difficulties in partnerships and relationships of all kinds. His crony Alberto Gonzales is being scrambled in Congressional hearings, his devotee Condoleeza Rice is being relegated to the back burner after her failed mission to repair the international alliances which her boss had destroyed. Despite the pressures of Saturn, a planet that normally has us retreating into darkness as we prepare our next move, Bush is out wielding his sword all over the place, the schoolyard bully trying to bluff the bipartisan Congress with his phallic veto powers.

George Bush's current transits are a lesson in the fact that harmonious transits are not always a good thing. Jupiter in Bush's natal chart is square to his Sun, an aspect that tends to create an aggrandized (Jupiter) ego (Sun). Currently, transiting Jupiter is trine Saturn and sextile Neptune, and all three planets are aspecting this Jupiter/Sun square. So we have transiting Jupiter expanding Bush's sense of self-importance even more and Saturn adding stability to the mix. Meanwhile Neptune is opposing Bush's Venus, making it difficult for him to see his relationships with any clarity.

Most alarming, transiting Jupiter began an opposition cycle to Uranus in Bush's chart back in February, exciting his rebellious nature and causing his expanded ego (Jupiter/Sun square in his chart) to demand new forms of expression (Uranus). The Mars/Uranus conjunction over the past few days has aspected Bush's natal Uranus, throwing more fuel on the fire. He is impatient now and more likely to take action without thinking.

Bush may begin to lose some of his bravado over the next few weeks as transiting Mars opposes Neptune in his chart, a short-term event which normally creates confusion (Neptune) around what we want and how we get it (Mars). Early June could be problematic as well, with Mars making a square to his Sun which tends to stir up anger and resentment, and Mars opposing his Chiron which can bring up painful issues from the past. In addition, transiting Mars will oppose Bush's progressed Mars - more aggression and belligerence, and then during the second week of June we have Mars opposing his natal Jupiter, demanding recognition. After running wild with his pals Jupiter and Uranus, Bush's Mars faces obstacles in the third week of June with Mars making a square to Saturn. With Saturn conjunct his Venus at the same time we may begin to see more of an attempt towards conciliation as his dealings with others become more difficult.

The Mars events continue into July, making it very likely that the battle with Congress will continue into the summer. Hopefully the President can see far enough past his own ego to be able to work with the rest of the US government and solve the major problems facing the country.
