Robin Williams to divorce

Marsha Garces Williams, wife of actor Robin Williams, filed for divorce last week citing "irreconciliable differences". Although Robin is best known for his comedic skills, he has a long history of drug and alcohol addiction and it is rumored that Marsha filed divorce papers after her ultimatum failed to wean him from his addictions.

The astrological chart of Robin Williams shows a fascinating blend of comic genius and tragic emotional pain, the combination of which appears to be essential in all of the great comic minds. Williams, with a Cancer Sun, also has a Pisces Moon and Scorpio rising. This heavy watery influence shows his intensely sensitive emotional nature, and a tendency to lose himself (Pisces Moon) into his environment. Mercury (mental function) in his chart is in the fun-loving sign of Leo, and Leo is the King of Comedy. That Mercury sits prominently on the Midheaven of his chart, demonstrating his ability to connect with the public (Midheaven) through his ability to express his thoughts and ideas (Mercury). Pluto (intensity and drama) conjoins his Mercury which suggests a powerful mind with an obsessive nature.

Williams has a wildly revolutionary conjunction of Mars (aggression) and Uranus (rebellion) which is tightly aspected to both Jupiter (expansion) and Neptune (fantasy), and it is this planetary system in his birthchart which describes his unique methodology when it comes to acting. WIlliams cannot be controlled and rarely sticks to the script. His strong Cancerian influence (with Sun, Mars and Uranus all in Cancer) reveals his intense attachment to family and his strong desire to nurture others; in fact, he has become a surrogate parent to the children of Christopher and Dana Reeve after their recent deaths.

Saturn (challenges and disappointments) in Williams' chart is in an exact challenging aspect (square) to Chiron (wounding and healing), indicating a psyche that is extremely sensitive with a tendency towards experiencing life in a way that brings up painful psychic and emotional wounds. Ideally an individual with this combination of planets will seek healing of these old wounds, but the easiest way to deal with them is to numb them with addictions. Transiting Saturn made a challenging aspect to the ascendant of Williams' chart (his "rising sign") back in late July of 2006 which resulted in his admitting himself to rehab in August of that year.

Williams experienced another difficult cycle when transiting Pluto made a pass over the Saturn/Chiron system in his chart back in January of 2007 and remained within one degree of that painful system throughout the year. Williams' older brother died in August of that year, but I suspect the entire year was extremely difficult for Williams as Pluto applied consistent pressure on any unhealed old wounds that remained in his psyche.

Williams' family-oriented nature has not kept him from infidelity in the past; his first marriage ended after an affair with his current wife who was at the time the nanny to his children and evidently this was not his first adulterous episode. Venus in Williams' chart is in Virgo, which often tends to be rather prudish and perfectionistic, and it opposes that Pisces Moon. Challenging aspects between Venus (love and beauty) and the Moon (nurturing and sensitivity) denote an individual who finds it difficult to reconcile their emotional needs (Moon) in their relationships (Venus), and the archetypes of the sexual goddess (Venus) with the maternal figure (Moon). This is the classic "madonna/whore" complex and while this is not universally true it does sometimes indicate a proclivity in a man's chart to separate the two. In December, transiting Saturn came very close to the Moon/Venus combination in his chart and doubtless intensified his depression.

Williams has a few other astrological things going on as well: in March of 2007 transiting Chiron began squaring Williams' ascendant and bringing up all of his issues around his ability to establish his own identity (ascendant) relative to his marriage (descendant), a cycle that concluded in December. And a transit of Neptune over his nadir (opposing his Midheaven, or career point) has likely created a great deal of confusion over his role in his personal life and family (nadir) relative to his career and public persona (Midheaven). This cycle began in May of 2007 and is just now in the second phase of a cycle that will conclude in January of 2009.

This is a difficult time for Robin Williams, and I hope that he will be able to resolve his demons that are the burden accompanying his tremendous gifts.

Sunday Inspiration for stillness

When we look around we can see a lot of things to worry about. But deep within is a silent stillness that carries us back to our Selves and transcends all worry and doubt.

The wind is the breath of heaven and earth.

Into every corner it unfolds and reaches;
Without choosing between high or low,
Exalted or humble, it touches everywhere.

'A Nation of Enrons"

This was in my inbox today. Those of us who follow astrology will not be surprised to read from the Motley Fool that the corporate culture is collapsing under the influence of Pluto (breakdown and transformation) in Capricorn (business, achievement, capitalism):
Half a decade ago, the entire nation was shocked when award-winning "innovator" Enron turned out to be little more than a cash-shredding pyramid scheme. The crucial failing for investors was Enron's use of opaque, "mark-to-market" accounting. The problem comes when the market is batty (or doesn't exist), so you instead mark your assets to a model, especially one that's wrong, either because you made an error or because you based it on exceedingly generous assumptions.

In the end, we learned that Enron's accounting was pretty much mark-to-fairy-tale, with the company booking enormous gains from assumed future profits on schemes (like bandwidth trading) that sounded great, but had little chance of producing anything besides headlines.

You might think we'd learned our lessons about fantasy accounting after Enron, but you would be wrong. Things actually got worse. The infection moved to the comfy-sounding "homeownership" market. Against a star-spangled, feel-good backdrop touting the "American Dream," our recent mark-to-model mania tripped up a lot more than one big company. In fact, it swept through the entire banking world. (Bear Stearns (NYSE: BSC) is not the first to choke on lousy, poorly modeled mortgage-backed securities "income," and I'll eat a Miami condo if it's the last.)

I've been reading articles about the slowdown of big mega retailers, and I'm wondering if the coming transformation of the corporate world might bring about the return of independent business (when Uranus in Aries squares Pluto in Cap 2010-2013). Perhaps it's just wishful thinking, but it seems that this ever-expanding marketplace will have to burst its bubble at some point, leaving local mom and pop shops to fill in the gaps.

The Motley Fool does have some good news for investors, though:
I am certain that systemic failure has steered us into a terrifying run at the ditch, to be followed by a painful, protracted rough patch. It was all spawned by greed gone amok on Wall Street and Main Street. Yet I believe history will prove this to be one of the best times to have invested in stocks, especially attractive-priced small caps. Here's why:
  • The market is in panic mode, and when markets panic, no one's thinking.
  • Small caps have been crushed more than the rest of the market, as investors seek "safe" large caps.
  • Over time, value-priced small caps produce some of the most amazing returns in the market. Really.
  • There are loads of small caps out there poised for years, if not decades, of fantastic growth, but the market is pricing them as if they are dead and buried.
Sounds very Saturn in Virgo, but value investing is back, along with cautious spending and thrifty saving, all very nice Virgoan traits!

"The Personals Meet the Transpersonal" and other Planetary news

Thanks to KT The Astrologer for posting this lovely article on the conjunction right now of Uranus to Mercury and Venus (perhaps that's why most of my day has been spent dealing with malfunctioning telecommunications equipment??):
It can be a very interesting time when a personal planet conjuncts a transpersonal planet in the sky as both are functioning from very different levels.

So when they meet it’s like the college student and the 2nd grader working on the same project.

This is what is happening on the 27th and 28th, except the college student is asked to work with two 2nd graders.

The conjunction of Uranus, Mercury and Venus has us dealing with the needs of the personality meshing with the viewpoint from higher consciousness.

Uranus needs things to change, to break free and to disrupt. Its energy is about the greater good and trying to create a better future and it will do this any way it can.

Mercury in entrenched in the mind and serves the personality. Venus with its need for relating and indulging also likes to keep the ego happy.

When they band together we experience a rather radical shift in perception and values.

Our relationships, finances and our take on ourselves aesthetically will undergo a tremor of around 5.5 on the ‘astrological Richter scale’ Our ideas surrounding these issues may be rocked and a whole new way of thinking will being to crack open.

This triple conjunction is exactly sextile Jupiter right now, the culmination of a cycle which has taken all month to perfect and would typically bring about an expansion (Jupiter) of innovation and exciting change (Uranus). However, pesky Chiron and Neptune, which are fused now in Aquarius, are inconjunct (30 degrees) both Jupiter and Uranus, squeezing a wedge between their joyous party. Chiron inconjunct Uranus is bringing up all of those things that no one wants to hear but which must be said, and inconjunct Jupiter it helps to facilitate conversation and the healing of ideologies which have lost their luster. The Neptune component adds just enough mist to create some confusion and potential for illusion. A murky road to say the least!

Venus and Mercury break away from the Jupiter/Uranus party by early next week when Mercury will be squared by Pluto and we'll REALLY see some enthusiastic discussions!

"Iraq is exploding"

Last week I commented, "Judging from the chart for the war in Iraq, events are about to make a surprising turn. After two years of a challenging transit (square) from Pluto to the Sun/Mercury conjunction in the chart, which seems to have had the effect of relentless and unending death and destruction (Pluto), Uranus (radical change) is about to transit Pluto (power and transformation) in the invasion chart."

Noting a strong Chiron influence, I was hoping for some healing to take place but sometimes Chiron exerts its healing influence by bringing the simmering conflicts into view so that they can be examined in order hopefully to release them. Now we learn that Moqtada al Sadr's cease fire has suddenly (Uranus) ended in Basra and Sadr City. Much of the success in reducing violence has been attributed to the surge in US troops, but some argue that al-Sadr's ceasefire had as much or more of an influence.

The re-emergence of al-Sadr did seem to be a surprise after such a long time, but Mahdi Army fighters are now saying "The cease-fire is over; we have been told to fight the Americans."

It appears that President Bush will be forced to deal with this problem before the election and that will make for an even more interesting Presidential race.

Was Hillary Clinton Crucified on Friday's Grand Cross?

I apologize in advance to my dear readers who are Clinton supporters. A bit of snark may leak into this post.

Most of you are probably aware by now of Senator Clinton's need to backpedal on some of the statements that she made about landing in the midst of sniper fire during her trip to Bosnia in 1996 which was first refuted by actor/comic Sinbad, who was along on that trip, and most recently exposed by CBS news who was also there.

While this story started leaking out in the middle of March it didn't start really erupting until Saturday morning, just hours after the Cardinal Grand Cross that included the Full Moon and the Equinox, the Washington Post confirmed Sinbad's version of the story that "the "scariest" part was deciding where to eat. As he told Mary Ann Akers of washingtonpost.com, "I think the only 'red phone' moment was 'Do we eat here or at the next place?' "

Senator Clinton's progressed Sun is at 3 degrees Capricorn and has been opposed by Mars since the beginning of the month, and since the Full Moon exactly squared Pluto and by reference Mars as well, the entire Grand Cross formed a tight aspect to Clinton's progressed Sun suggesting a major shift in her life path.

The timing of all of this is quite interesting and it will be even more interesting to see how this event plays out in the long run. Transiting Saturn is trine the progressed Sun which adds an element of stability and strength and Clinton is known for her indefatigability so she will likely weather this storm as she has so many others! I myself lived through the Grand Cross which was in a tight aspect to my Capricorn Mars which is being hit by Pluto at the moment, and things that don't kill us, as we know, can make us much, much stronger.

Photo is of Mrs. Clinton being greeted in Bosnia.

Tibetan Astrology and the Planetary Winds

The Kalachakra, or Wheel of Time.

In light of the current riots in Tibet I was looking online for a chart of Tibet since my Book of World Horoscopes does not contain one, and came across a wealth of material on Tibetan astrology. I confess I never realized that Tibet had its own branch of astrology that evidently is derived from a combination of Indian and Chinese methods and has its roots in Tibetan Tantric Buddhism. A site from the Tibetan Astrology network says:
In the Kalacakra Tantra as a whole, the subject matter is usually divided into three Wheels, or phases, known as the External, Internal and Alternative Wheels. The External wheel is the External Cosmos, with the cycles of the planets, constellations and stars, and this includes a system of astronomy and astrology. The Internal wheel is the internal Cosmos of chakras, channels and energies within the body, and their relation to the cycles of the External Cosmos. This section contains a basis for understanding how the planets effect us through the mechanism of the subtle body. The Alternative wheel is the yogic techniques for purifying and transforming the inner and outer to release our innate awareness and capacities. These are all depicted within the Kalacakra Mandala.
I found myself being particularly interested in this idea of a three-wheel system and found this information on another site:
The Wheel of Time teachings on the universe reveals that our changing consciousness states are due to the changing circulations of these planetary winds though our energy body with its chakras and channels. In syncronicity with the motions of the external universe, the planetary winds cycle through the chakras and channels, and riding upon them is our original awareness, experiencing the multitude of cycles of consciousness states and resultant events. Mind, pranic winds and consciousness are inseparably connected with each other. ... This is therefore an astrology that incorporates the concepts of karma and reincarnation as episodes of the souls journey.

These circulations of the internal planetary winds in the chakras are not haphazard, but follow predictable cycles. Periodically, and for every individual, they arrive at points in the cycle where an internal equilibrium is reached, permitting the planetary winds to collect and enter the most important channel in the body, the central channel, the dragon, which runs through the very centre of all the major chakras, stimulating them from within. At these points in the cycle, with the application of yoga practice, an energy basis is created for the arisal of transformative states of consciousness and greatly expanded awareness and insight.

Alternatively, there are points of crisis, under and overactivation of energies, and periods of potential imbalance. The detailed knowledge of these circulations of the planetary winds within the body, what to do with them, and how, is an important function of the Wheel of Time Tantric Astrology. The circulations of planetary winds in the chakras, in the normal flow of time, reaches conscious equilibrium only on rare occasions, and these form the great insights we gain during the course of a normal lifetime. However, these planetary winds do not only move in synchronicity with the external planetary motions, but can be made to move through the highest yoga tantra practices.

The normal evolution of consciousness is said to take eons and eons of lives to effect the full awakening of the human awareness through the intermittent moments of insight produced through the cycle of externally effected equilibriums. ... Thus, this path can be considered to be an accelerated pathway through time, where states of expanded and clarified awareness and insight are induced in quicker succession, awakening all the chakras to their highest potentials. The highest insight said to be produced through these practices is the awakening to the interdependent nature of all manifestation, the interconnectedness of all that exists, and the union of Insight and Compassion. [ Paragraphs added for ease of reading.]
This is exactly how I see the ultimate use of Western astrology as well, but without the use of specified tantric yoga methods and special amulets. In my view the power of the human soul to awaken transcends any specific path or religion and can be accomplished through the use of will and attention to the planetary cycles in which we find ourselves. Each planet vibrates at a different frequency, and as we go through a planetary cycle we ourselves become tuned to that frequency. I love this idea of an "accelerated pathway through time" and also the wisdom of this system that irrevocably intertwines astrology and medicine.

This will be cross-posted on Dharmaruci's site where I'm guest blogging, and perhaps some in his Buddhist community will add some wisdom on this fascinating system.

Crucifixions and the Full Moon Grand Cross

Dharmaruci found this interesting correlation to the Grand Cross at last week's Full Moon:
Health officials in the Philippines have issued a warning to people taking part in Easter crucifixion rituals. (Note the Moon and Saturn will be in Virgo.) They have urged them to get tetanus vaccinations [they probably won't - Neptune is unaspected] before they flagellate themselves and are nailed to crosses, and to practise good hygiene.

On Good Friday dozens of very devout Catholics in the Philippines re-enact the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It is something that has become a huge tourist attraction, although the Church frowns on the practice.

The health department has strongly advised penitents to check the condition of the whips they plan to use to lash their backs, the Manila Times newspaper reports. They want people to have what they call "well-maintained" whips [Now that's Pluto in Capricorn for you.]

Easter and the Equinox

(reprinted from last year)

Many people now know that Christian holidays such as Christmas and Easter are tied to pagan celebrations of cosmological events such as the solstices and equinoxes. Easter, a holiday that commemorates the time that Jesus supposedly rose from the tomb, was originally connected to both the Equinox and the full moon since it originally occurred on the first Sunday after the first Full Moon following the Vernal Equinox.

This was likely calculated from observation of the full moon at first, but because the date derived from the actual full moon coincided with the Jewish celebration of Passover. For centuries the early Church leaders squabbled over a method to determine the date for Easter and ultimately created a table of "ecclesiastical" full moons for which to calculate a date for Easter in an unbelievably complex method.

I personally believe that the practice of dating Christian "feast days" to coincide with pagan magical points such as the solstices and equinoxes and moons goes beyond a simple desire to convert the pagans; it is quite likely that the early church fathers were aware of the power of these planetary events that connect us to a greater sense of cosmological wonder and utilized them to their advantage. At the Vernal Equinox we celebrate the resurrection of Spring, and for centuries preChristian peoples celebrated the resurrection of their dying gods at the Equinox. Dionysos, Tammuz, Adonis and Attis were all gods whose rebirth was celebrated as the Spring brought the return of fertility to the land. It is this fertility connection to Easter that brings us the Easter bunny, whose capacity to become impregnated with a second litter while bearing the first makes it a perfect symbol for fertility.

And the name Easter? This name comes directly from the Saxon fertility goddess Eostre or Ostara, who was depicted with hares and whose festival was celebrated at the spring Full Moon.

Five years later: The War in Iraq

Judging from the chart for the war in Iraq, events are about to make a surprising turn. After two years of a challenging transit (square) from Pluto to the Sun/Mercury conjunction in the chart, which seems to have had the effect of relentless and unending death and destruction (Pluto), Uranus (radical change) is about to transit Pluto (power and transformation) in the invasion chart.

Pluto sits prominently on the Midheaven of the chart which seems appropriate for the chart of a war, but it also opposes Saturn exactly on the IC (nadir) which suggests a terrible challenge for the families of war who have lost their homes (fourth house) and connection to their country. The fourth house deals not only with the personal and individual home, but also with tribal affiliations and Saturn at the cusp of the fourth house can show rigid delineations of those affiliations as well as tests and disappointments. This angular Saturn/Pluto opposition describes an endless war that rips families and tribes apart. The transit of Pluto across the angles and opposing Saturn in the invasion chart continued into the end of 2005.

Uranus will be square to the Saturn/Pluto MC/IC opposition for the next two years which is likely to bring about an increase in internal rebellion that breaks up the status quo (Uranus) and shifts the course of the war. A harmonious transit (sextile) of Chiron to these points has also just begun and this could bring about some internal healing to facilitate change.

Uranus is the awakener, and until the people of the world wake up to what is transpiring in the name of the so-called War on Terror, the travesty will continue. In the 1960s, we turned on and dropped out. Now it's time to turn off the tvs, and tune back in.

Billions of dollars down the drain

The United States has a history of valuing money over people. Pluto in the US (Sibley) chart is in the second house of financial wealth and resources, and the compulsive (Pluto) need to acquire could be its undoing. Transiting Pluto is square the Midheaven of the US chart, and this event will reverberate in Pluto's natal house which in this case is the second house.

Not only are we spending billions of dollars in Iraq, but we're also now spending billions of dollars to bail out failing banks, money that of course will be repaid by the taxpayers. And since Bush's tax cuts have cut the tax rate of the wealthiest Americans, that burden will be shouldered by what is left of the middle class. This commentator says:
[T]he Fed might be fighting yesterday’s war, when the problem seemed to be a liquidity crisis. The Fed first lowered interest rates to facilitate borrowing. No luck; long-term rates were immovable. It then made funds available to credit markets for very short periods on attractive terms. No luck; credit markets remained frozen. So now we have the offer of $200 billion of high-quality assets to replace those of lesser quality. Tune in after a few weeks to find out if this has significantly eased credit markets, or merely created a bit of euphoria in stock markets.

Meanwhile, the Fed’s critics are saying that the enemy is no longer liquidity, but the threat of insolvency. We have already had billions in write-offs, and hundreds of billions more of such “marking to market” is coming. So steep will these write-downs be that the banks will find they are bust - what they owe to depositors and creditors exceeds the value of their shrivelled assets. Unless they can get more capital, say the doom-mongers, they will have to shut their tellers’ windows.

So far, sovereign wealth funds have put up that capital, but even they do not have deep enough pockets to shore up the entire American banking system. Faced with a systemic collapse of the banking system, the government can do one of two things. It can flood the economy with cash, driving up inflation and the nominal value of the assets underlying bank loans. Lenders would get repaid, but in depreciated dollars. Fear of just such a devaluation has driven up gold to $1,000 an ounce, and the dollar down to record lows.

Or the government can nationalise the debt owed to the banks. Taxpayers’ funds would be conscripted, and pumped into failing financial institutions to prevent their collapse. Sound like ... what 32 of 51 economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal say is now somewhere between likely and certain?
Encouraging more borrowing may have worked under the expansion of Pluto in Sagittarius, but it won't work for Pluto in Capricorn. Americans are sensing the Capricornian contraction and tightening their belts. Folks, we're in for a bumpy ride.

A powerhouse of an Equinox

The Vernal Equinox occurs tomorrow, March 20, at 2 am EST as the Sun enters Aries, marking the re-entry of the fire element into our planetary cycles. The opposition of Mars in Cancer to Pluto in Capricorn has certainly been fiery, but the fire element has been notably missing.

The chart for the Vernal Equinox point features the Equinox Sun nearly exactly square to Pluto and still within orb of a square to Mars which is moving away from that pesky opposition point. Pluto, which is stationing (slowing down) in preparation for its retrograde turn, is amplified in intensity. We also find an opposition between Mercury (mental functions) and Saturn (disillusionment) that is likely to create some negative thinking and difficulty in communication processes.

One day later, the Libra Full Moon will move into position to square Mars and Pluto as it opposes the Sun, forming a Grand Cross. The next few days will be a powerful time, and the energy of this time will spill over into the next few weeks and possibly months. It's very important now, in this time of great power, to be aware of the energy that we are sending into the world. Everything is amplified now, and each small event ripples into a greater event that has far-reaching consequences.

Musings on the Ascendant

The rising sign, or ascendant, is the sign that was on the horizon at the East at the time that we were born. No matter what house system you use, the ascendant and midheaven (noon point) are always the same, it's the intermediary house division that changes.

Being the cusp of the first house which is the house of personal identity, the ascendant describes our personality or our disguise as I like to call it. These are the traits that describe the way you meet the day-to-day events of your life as well as the way you appear to others. The ascendant is usually something that we grow into and an understanding of the ascendant can serve to facilitate our interactions with others since it's that sign that is projected outwards.

The late Howard Sasportas says that the ascendant is the lens through which we look at the world. He writes, "We 'dream the world up' according to the sign on the Ascendant and then we enact the dream. It is both the maze we create and, at the same time, the way out of the maze." Sasportas adds that the ascendant points the way in which we grow into our Sun sign. When the ascendant is very similar to or compatible with the rest of our chart, this process can be a smooth one. But often the ascendant is quite different from other chart elements and that can cause some problems, especially early in our lives when we have not yet recognized the impact that the personality traits seen by others as described by the ascendant has on our own lives. This is one of the cases where understanding our astrological chart can have a huge impact on our ability to effectively navigate our way in the world.

For example, consider someone with a Scorpio Sun and Moon (let's call him Andy) who has a Sagittarius ascendant (Sagittarius rising in the chart). With a strong Scorpio orientation, Andy has been assigned the mission of learning to be the best Scorpio possible by immersing himself in intense experiences that bring him into direct contact with the stark realities of the power inherent in human life. To relish the darkness and plunge fearlessly into emotional depths that would frighten the ordinary mortal. But with the Sagittarius ascendant, casual acquaintances see Andy as a fun-loving, optimistic and carefree individual. Seeing Andy in this way, they may enter into a friendship with him and then run when they see that his essential self (the Sun) is very different than what they had perceived.

The ascendant isn't a part of the energy makeup of the personality that is described by the rest of the chart, and conscious integration of the ascendant is very useful. I have a Libra Sun which is very compatible with my Gemini ascendant, but Saturn, Pluto and Scorpio are very strong in my chart. When I was younger, people that I didn't know often perceived me as being somewhat flighty and superficial (Gemini) until they knew me well enough to be smacked with some of those more intense traits from the rest of my chart.

One of the wonderful things about aging is that we become more comfortable being who we really are inside of ourselves. Astrology makes this process that much easier!

Dolphins Save the Whales

This has nothing to do with astrology, but it's wonderful nonetheless and shows the interconnectedness of all life:
THEY famously attempted to warn mankind of the Earth's impending destruction in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, only for their behaviour to be dismissed as playful acrobatics.

But now, solid evidence has emerged of the dolphin's altruistic nature. In a act of selflessness which has astounded experts and confirmed the friendly nature of the species, a bottlenose came to the rescue of two whales stranded on a beach in New Zealand.

The dolphin – nicknamed Moko by local residents, who said it spent much of its time swimming playfully with beachgoers – helped two pygmy sperm whales, facing imminent death after becoming stranded on a sandbar, swim to safety.

Until Moko's arrival, rescuers feared the mother and calf would have to be put down to prevent them suffering a prolonged death on Mahia beach, about 300 miles north-east of Wellington.

Malcolm Smith and his team from the New Zealand Conservation Department had tried in vain to rescue the animals for an hour-and-a-half. With their effort faltering, it seemed only a matter of time before the operation was called off.

"They kept getting disoriented and stranding again," Mr Smith said yesterday. "They couldn't find their way back past (the sandbar] to the sea."

Just as it seemed all hope was lost, Moko appeared. The dolphin approached the whales, leading them 200m along the beach before navigating them out to the open sea.

Mr Smith believes the dolphin heard the whales' distress calls and came to their aid.

"It was looking like it was going to be a bad outcome for the whales ... then Moko came along and fixed it," he said. "They had arched their backs and were calling to one another, but as soon as the dolphin turned up, they submerged and followed her.

"I don't speak whale and I don't speak dolphin, but there was obviously something that went on, because the two whales changed from being quite distressed to following the dolphin willingly and directly along the beach and straight out to sea."

Another rescuer, Juanita Symes, added: "Moko came flying through the water and pushed in between us and the whales. She got them to head toward the hill, where the channel is. It was an amazing experience. The best day of my life."

Astrology and the Mets

Jill will enjoy this, since she's one of the biggest Mets fans of all time. The New York Times has an article highlighting the astrological predictions of a New York astrologer who is also a loyal Mets fan:
Mallis was at an Athletics game in Oakland in 2001 when inspiration struck her like a hard foul ball. Curious to know what made Barry Zito, then Oakland’s eccentric ace, so different, she found his birth date — he is a Taurus — and ran his chart. Mallis discussed her findings in a call to the A’s postgame radio show, “Extra Innings.” She ended up as a regular on the show with a spot called “Astrology Minute.”

A regular at baseball’s winter meetings since 2004, Mallis has shared her astrological insights on players with Mets General Manager Omar Minaya, a Scorpio. Minaya acknowledged that he had spoken to Mallis but that he did not want to talk about her work.

Mercury in Pisces and the Power of Silence

Ocean Magic, by Willow Arlenea

Mercury moved into Pisces a couple of days ago following on the heels of Venus, ending the stellium (grouping) of planets in Aquarius. Where Mercury in Aquarius seeks intelligently reasoned dialogue and, though rather insensitive, is concerned about social justice in Pisces Mercury seeks magic and mystery and connection with the divine.

Although traditional astrologers will say that Mercury is in its detriment in Pisces because its ability to think rationally is affected by Pisces' watery nature which tends to act like a psychic sponge and the boundaries between reality and the mystic are often blurred, for spiritual matters Mercury is at its best in Pisces where it is unaffected by personal ego and rigid belief systems.

The psychic sensitivity that Mercury in Pisces (or in the twelfth house of your natal chart) engenders makes it necessary to spend periods of time in solitude and silence so that the psyche can be cleaned of external impressions. Beth Owl's Daughter has been discussing the customs of fasting that many cultures have adopted during the period leading up to the Spring Equinox, including of course the Christian custom of fasting at Lent.

Beth writes:
I have come to believe that our Western emphasis on intellect, analysis and the mighty mind, rather than being an asset, is often a handicap. I am fortunate to travel in social circles with people who are astonishingly smart, articulate and creative in wordy ways. And I, myself, admittedly also aspire to this. But I am beginning to suspect that those kinds of brilliance, as important as they are in some ways, ultimately hamper our understanding and knowledge of who we are.

I have observed that one of the last socially acceptable forms of arrogance and bigotry is that of “intelligence.” Few of us question what that actually means, and fewer consider that “intelligence” may be only an arbitrary, possibly meaningless description. Perhaps it is no more important to the truth of our identity than the color of our skin, our age, or our gender.

I have also noticed how “intelligence” and intellect frequently interfere with magic. Have you ever been at a concert where the music had swept you to realms of rapture, only to overhear the people behind you discussing the performer’s technique, or how they heard a better rendition last year, or analyzing the merits of the composer’s earlier works? Perhaps that is how some people believe they are “enjoying” the music – by processing it through the data banks, and sparring with one another over the breadth of their knowledge.

But I wonder.

We have made it seem natural and admirable to have constant analysis and commentary of every single aspect of our lives. We give one another verbal validation or criticism. We process our experiences with words, and verbalization has been inextricably linked to what defines us as the intelligent apes.

Yet the power of silence cannot be overstated.
The use, or non-use, of words and language for the purposes of magic and imagination is what Mercury in Pisces is all about. With Mercury in Pisces the inner landscape becomes rich and colorful, a gorgeous tapestry of thoughts, ideas and dreams. Let us embrace the enhancement of our dream world during this time, and use it to our advantage!

Pluto and Obama's minister

The pastor of Barack Obama's church is back in the news after a videotape of the Reverend Jeremiah Wright surfaced yesterday. In the videotape of a fiery sermon delivered Christmas Day, Wright is shown saying:
“We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York, and we never batted an eye,” Wright says. “We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is brought right back in our own front yards.”
While this is something that I myself have said, and probably many of you as well, it's obviously a radical statement for a gentlemanly candidate like Obama to be associated with and intensifies the projection of race into the election season. Transiting Pluto is approaching an exact opposition to Venus in his chart which shows that his relationships could become a big problem for him.

Obama responded on the Huffington Post:
All of the statements that have been the subject of controversy are ones that I vehemently condemn. They in no way reflect my attitudes and directly contradict my profound love for this country.

With Rev. Wright's retirement and the ascension of my new pastor, Rev. Otis Moss, III, Michelle and I look forward to continuing a relationship with a church that has done so much good. And while Rev. Wright's statements have pained and angered me, I believe that Americans will judge me not on the basis of what someone else said, but on the basis of who I am and what I believe in; on my values, judgment and experience to be President of the United States.
It's unfortunate that Obama feels he has to throw his pastor under the bus in an attempt to appease the brewing conflict, because there are issues arising that could do some good if they were discussed openly. But I can also see where the Reverend Wright may have decided to take advantage of his fifteen minutes of fame as the pastor to the leading Presidential candidate, and step up on his pulpit for some truthtelling. That, after all, is what Pluto is all about.

What's got into Geraldine Ferraro?

Geraldine Ferraro was the first woman to run as vice president on a major party ticket back in 1984 when she ran with Walter Mondale in an unsuccessful bid for the White House. She is back in the news after a long absence after her support for Hillary Clinton's campaign resulted in this statement from her published on March 7:
"I think what America feels about a woman becoming president takes a very secondary place to Obama's campaign - to a kind of campaign that it would be hard for anyone to run against," she said. "For one thing, you have the press, which has been uniquely hard on her. It's been a very sexist media. Some just don't like her. The others have gotten caught up in the Obama campaign.

"If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position," she continued. "And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."
The interview actually took place on February 28.

Putting aside my own feelings about this comment, since the controversy in this election grows more heated every day, Ferraro's astrology adds an interesting twist. (Astrotheme has the chart but use the birthtime with caution as it is unconfirmed.) Ferraro has a Virgo Sun, which typically shies away from publicity and the media and prefers to work behind the scenes. That Sun is opposed by strict Saturn, indicating a person who begins life with a lack of self-esteem that causes them to feel they have to work harder than anyone else to accomplish their goals. Saturn is retrograde in her chart which accentuates the self-critical tendency even more.

If the Astrotheme birthtime is correct, Ferraro has Aries rising which adds a great deal of spunk to the Virgo personality and makes it easier for her to assert herself on the public stage. She also has Mars (aggression) conjunct Jupiter (confidence and expansion) in Scorpio (deep emotions), revealing a passionate nature. That conjunction forms a square to her Moon, showing that she can be very touchy at times.

Since last fall transiting Saturn began a series of conjunctions to Ferraro's Sun, a transit that often brings some despair and depression, and Saturn is currently opposing Saturn in Ferraro's own chart. This is always a challenging time since Saturn, the Celestial Taskmaster, is busily at work during these transits letting us know where in our life we fall short of our own expectations.

Then last month recently transiting Chiron (wounding and healing) began to square that natal Mars/Jupiter conjunction, beginning with a very tight square of the Aquarius eclipse on February 6 to Mars and Jupiter in Ferraro's chart. As one of my clients pointed out, eclipses promote the "unmasking" of something in our lives, and for Ferraro the eclipse, incorporating the painful sensitivity of the transit of Chiron and the sense of failure that the Saturn transit engenders, opened up those old doors of frustration. This is exacerbated by the fact that Ferraro's progressed Moon is preparing to cross her ascendant (if the birth time is correct) where her emotions (Moon) are revealing themselves publicly (ascendant), and moving into a square to transiting Pluto, intensifying those emotions and adding a life-or-death sensibility.

Geraldine Ferraro's controversial statement has served to bring an uncomfortable argument into the open that has been the elephant in the room. The only problem for the Clinton campaign is that the statement could be equally true of their candidate. How many Clinton supporters want to elect a woman? How many Obama supporters want to break the color barrier? Much of this election about transforming (Pluto) the base of power in this country (Capricorn), and that is not a bad thing.

The funny thing about Uranus and the markets

(Please refrain from scatological jokes here!) On Monday the stock market rose over 400 points, the biggest single day rise since 2002, confirming the predictions of noted astrological money expert Ray Merriman who, noting the falling markets at the New Moon which was conjunct Uranus on Friday, predicted for this week:
For this week, Venus will enter Pisces March 12, followed by Mercury doing the same March 14. More Pisces. More confusion and uncertainty. This is followed by Venus starting its translation to the Saturn-Uranus opposition, starting with its opposition to Saturn on March 15, and culminating with its conjunction to Uranus on March 28. The roller coaster may pause this week, but more steep slopes could be ahead March 15-28. Of course with the new moon conjunct Uranus this past Friday, a sudden and sharp rally is also possible, for it can be counted on for one thing: it does what most people do not expect.
The one thing you can expect from Uranus is the unexpected, making it impossible to make astrological predictions when Uranus is involved. The New Moon/Uranus conjunction was in Pisces where it is idealistic and compassionate but with a tendency towards delusion. The rise in the markets came about due to a huge infusion of cash (transiting Jupiter (expansion) forming a sextile to Uranus and the New Moon) from the Federal Reserve, acting with the European Central Bank, the Bank of Canada and the Swiss National Bank. I've read enough conspiracy theory to be very concerned when this kind of global banking cartel begins working to control the world's financial markets, particularly as Pluto begins its travels through Capricorn, the sign of banking, financing, and large corporations.

The philosophy behind most conspiracy thinking is that a few people behind the major banking elites control the wealth of large nations and now, with globalization, the wealth of the entire planet. While conspiracy theorists often go beyond the realm of logic to prove their point, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that they are not so crazy. In collusion, the world's central banks can easily manipulate the financial markets to rise and fall and even crash, virtually at their whim. When the peasant population (most of the rest of us) put all of our faith into these systems, and all of our life's savings, there is devastation that results when the system crashes as it did back in 1929. Small banks go under - the large ones eat up the small ones and the cycle continues.

Pluto is stationary now at 1 degree Capricorn preparing to retrograde on April 2 and it will re-enter Sagittarius on June 12 where it will remain until the end of November. I believe it could be a wise move to collect your winnings during this last Sagittarian period and then walk away from the table. The next few years could be very rough.

More on the Fall of Spitzer

Sally McDonald has more:
The crusader of Wall Street, the hero of the little guy, the white knight fighting corporate corruption, Eliot Spitzer has been felled. He was felled by his own sword and his enemies piling on top to make sure he is sliced and diced to death. It wasn't the far right evangelicals, or the keepers of rigid morals who brought him down, oh no, it was a bank. (Spitzer June 10, 1959 Bronx, NY N/T)

Money, one of the seven deadly sins, not illigal sex, but money. The government had been watching how Eliot had been spending his money. I expect they've been watching him since he cut the legs out from under Enron. Course Eliot helped them with his Leo stellium of Venus, Mrs, Moon and Uranus, pushed forward by his Gemini Sun and Mercury. His real problems begin when Pluto opposed his 28 degree Gemini Mercury, bad news being revealed. No question that Spitzer stuck the knife in himself but he isn't the only politician playing this game, both parties are knee deep in their egos and their pet perversions up to and including those at the top, that however is always kept under wraps. Gee, whatever happened to Jeff Gannon and his sleep overs at the WH. Several houses of prostitution say business is much better at GOP conventions than the Dem conventions.

The Fall of Eliot Spitzer

Eliot Spitzer, Governor of New York and former district attorney for the State of New York, is likely about to resign after being associated with a prostitution ring under investigation. As with most situations of this kind, there is a bitter irony associated with this scandal since Spitzer was well-known for his bulldog techniques in fighting crime in New York and presided over the prosecution of prostitution rings himself as attorney general. His vigilant prosecution of Wall Street firms and corporations brought him great acclaim from many and hatred from others and his run for Governor promised a return of ethics to Albany.

Scandal is not a new thing for Spitzer - his entry into the political arena in 1998 when he ran for state Attorney General was marred by questions over campaign spending involving his father's money. But his crusade to clean up the ethics of state politics made him popular with the public and he won the governor's seat in a landslide victory.

Astrologically Spitzer has the Sun in Gemini that is unaspected except for a wide conjunction to Mercury. The unaspected Sun stands alone and usually denotes an individual who acts independently but it can also reveal a lack of self-understanding. Gemini is a shapeshifter in any case - there is a need to take on a variety of roles and experiment with a variety of lifestyles that can make it more difficult to establish a strong personal identity, and when the Sun is unaspected that quality can become more pronounced.

Spitzer has a stellium (grouping) in Leo planets that includes Venus, Mars, the Moon and Uranus. A strong Leo emphasis such as this longs to be at the center of the stage, recognized and admired for one's achievements. Neptune squares the Leo planets which shows a tremendous creativity but also a tendency towards self-deception and illusion. Still, a trine from Saturn to Pluto in Spitzer's chart shows an ability to apply discipline and structure (Saturn) in a way that facilitates a growing power and influence (Pluto).

Spitzer's political life was proceeding rather smoothly until a series of mis-steps after his inauguration as governor cost him a great deal of public support. Last summer he was exposed in the use of state troopers to investigate the opposition Senate Majority Leader, and it appears to be around this time that his visits to "Kristen" began. At the time, transiting Pluto was opposing Mercury in his chart, a transit that can dredge up our darkest thoughts and obsessions, and transiting Uranus, the reckless revolutionary, was beginning a square to Spitzer's Gemini Sun. "Kristen" reports that Spitzer asked her to do "things that ... you might not think are safe." Under pressure politically, he likely sought to relieve the pressure through the relative anonymity of kinky (Uranus) prostitution (Pluto).

At the moment Spitzer is going through a Saturn/Pluto double whammy. Transiting Saturn (pressure and challenges) is aspecting Pluto in his chart (endings and rebirth), and transiting Pluto is aspecting Saturn in his chart. This is a time of change, and it doesn't help that the lunar eclipse of February 20 was in exact aspect to Spitzer's Pluto. This is a time of momentous change for Spitzer, but other more fortunate planetary cycles going on at the moment for him (including a trine of Pluto to his natal Pluto which facilitates inner transformation and greater personal empowerment) show that this period, though difficult, will result in a deep and lasting personal growth.

Saturn in Virgo and Challenges to our Health

Virgo is associated with health because it generally is concerned with matters of hygiene and balance between the mind, body and spirit. With Saturn in Virgo we are likely to see more issues like this in the mainstream news:
More than 100 different pharmaceuticals have been detected in lakes, rivers, reservoirs and streams throughout the world. Studies have detected pharmaceuticals in waters throughout Asia, Australia, Canada and Europe — even in Swiss lakes and the North Sea.

For example, in Canada, a study of 20 Ontario drinking water treatment plants by a national research institute found nine different drugs in water samples. Japanese health officials in December called for human health impact studies after detecting prescription drugs in drinking water at seven different sites.

In the United States, the problem isn't confined to surface waters. Pharmaceuticals also permeate aquifers deep underground, source of 40 percent of the nation's water supply. Federal scientists who drew water in 24 states from aquifers near contaminant sources such as landfills and animal feed lots found minuscule levels of hormones, antibiotics and other drugs.

Perhaps it's because Americans have been taking drugs — and flushing them unmetabolized or unused — in growing amounts. Over the past five years, the number of U.S. prescriptions rose 12 percent to a record 3.7 billion, while nonprescription drug purchases held steady around 3.3 billion, according to IMS Health and The Nielsen Co.

"People think that if they take a medication, their body absorbs it and it disappears, but of course that's not the case," said EPA scientist Christian Daughton, one of the first to draw attention to the issue of pharmaceuticals in water in the United States.
The last time Saturn was in Virgo, between 1978 and 1980, residents of Love Canal near Niagara Falls in New York were tested after it was noticed that a growing number of children born there had birth defects. The Superfund (CERCLA) Act was enacted in 1980 to compensate communities from environmental disasters.

There are also disturbing findings coming out about the effect of simulated sex hormones that are leaking into the environment. A recent study found that the songs of starlings who fed on earthworms that were contaminated by sex hormones from sewage treatment plants showed a change in their vocalization patterns, resulting in a more complex pattern that pleased the ladies but weakened the birds' immune systems.

And the debate over plastic bottles, which have been found to release chemicals that mimic estrogen in the body especially from heated or acidic fluids, has emerged into mainstream media.

Virgo is conservative and likes things the old fashioned way. Organic food from real farms, health that comes through healthy living rather than pharmaceuticals. It's not easy to live this way in today's world, but Saturn will no doubt show us where we are coming up short.

The violence wave reaches Chapel Hill

As Mars and Pluto opposed each other for the last time in a cycle that began last fall, a student at the University of North Carolina here in Chapel Hill where I live was murdered, the latest in a wave of violence that has increased the murder rate in Los Angeles by 27% for the year so far, and 30% in New Orleans. The UNC student, Eve Carson, was student body president and by all reports well-loved by students, faculty and even the political leadership of the Town who knew her in her role as Trustee. Her murder is being called a "random act of violence" by police, but my intuition tells me there is more to this story than meets the eye.

Murders are not unheard of in this quiet college town, but they tend to be concentrated in the areas where drug activity can be found and are usually the result of a drug deal gone bad, and a few years ago a high school student murdered his parents. We do not often see this type of seemingly random violence - the last time a townperson was murdered was 1995.

Violence seems to have spiked since the eclipse on February 6 when Mars was virtually stationary in preparation for the final opposition to Pluto. In 2007 there were five school shootings for the year, two of them in October and November as Mars began the opposition to Pluto; in 2008 so far there have been four and all between February 8 and 14th. There certainly appears to be a statistical correlation to Mars/Pluto, but I suspect that this is just be an eruption of the culture of stress and violence that is permeating the global consciousness.

With 1 in 100 people in the US behind bars and a steadily increasing crime rate, it is clear that Pluto in Capricorn will preside over the breakdown (Pluto) over our criminal justice system (Capricorn). Already US states cannot afford to continue feeding and housing prisoners and providing medical care at this level. Pluto governs over the breakdown and removal of systems that are no longer working, and clears away the debris. As it travels through Capricorn it will expose those areas of our culture that are disintegrating from within and complete the process so that something new will be rebuilt. The pinnacle of this process, of course, will occur in the period from 2010-2013 as Uranus in Aries makes a square to Pluto in Capricorn.

It seems very clear to me that the breakdown will need to be very nearly complete in order to transform to the degree that transformation is necessary. We have all experienced drastic changes in our life that were extremely uncomfortable, but which ended up to be the best thing that ever happened to us because of the transformation that occurred. We must not fear these changes but instead embrace them, because that is what will bring about the new age to come.

Obama's Birthtime - settled by Astrodatabank

Astrodatabank has confirmed that the 1:06 pm birthtime for Obama that is floated around is a myth.
Date and place from media sources including Obama’s IL General Assembly webpage. Various times of birth have been circulated or posted. A time of 1:06 PM was provided by Fran McEvoy who told PT she couldn’t remember who gave it to her. She said that the person reportedly obtained the time from Obama and wished to remain anonymous. McEvoy adamantly denied that she heard it from Obama at a "shout-out" in NH as reported in the Andrew Mangino article in the NY Observer online of July 24, 2007. PT has received e-mails or seen postings listing 9:51 AM, 10:02 AM, 1:15 PM, 2:10 AM, 6:10 AM, “1-3 AM,” and “Virgo rising,” but these times have either been acknowledged to be speculation, rectification or otherwise not traceable to an original or reliable source.
This gives us an opportunity to stop arguing over which house Obama's Pluto is in and keep an eye on the greater picture.

New Moon tomorrow! and a look ahead

We are still in the middle of the Aquarius stellium, with Chiron conjunct Mercury which is exacerbating the tendency of Mars in Cancer for hurt feelings. Fortunately, a conjunction of sweet Venus and romantic Neptune will soften the edges of any conflicts that come up, providing creative ways to move through difficulties and release old patterns as Neptune's urge to dissolve and transcend does its magic.

The New Moon on March 7 is at 17 degrees Pisces, the sign of spiritual experience and creativity. With the Sun conjunct the Moon, there is a linking of the conscious mind to the unconscious instinctive urges, fusing in a celebration of the divine experience that is the realm of Pisces. New Moons are known to be auspicious times for new ventures, and this New Moon is tightly conjunct Uranus, god of radical change and innovation. A powerful influence to aid us as we walk down a completely new path! We also see the influence of Jupiter coming into play as it approaches a sextile (harmonious aspect) to Uranus which will be exact late in March. This Jupiter/Uranus combination brings with it an excitement and eagerness for change and a readiness to move into the next phase.

The New Moon also incorporates an applying conjunction between Mercury and Neptune which is exact on the 8th, enhancing the imaginative quality of this lunation. This Mercury/Neptune conjunction is part of the Aquarius stellium that includes Chiron which continues to press our buttons if we don't surrender to the Neptunian flow and Chiron's call to face the daemon within. When Venus enters Pisces on March 12 and forms a sextile to Pluto on March 13, any resistance we are harboring will be lubricated and we will find it easier to make the necessary inner adjustments. On the 14th when Mercury leaves the Aquarius stellium to enter Pisces, the link to Chiron will be broken and the sensitivity of the early part of the month will ease. Mars also forms a sextile to Saturn on that day, and the days from March 12-16 or so will be a great time to get things done and follow your plan for success as the energy of Mars works harmoniously with Saturn's urge for achievement.

The astrological use of mythology

I continue to be blown away by the new crop of astrologers who have grown up in the craft with so many tools at their disposal and made good use of them. Chris Brennan, a recent graduate of Kepler College, is one of these and he has a new article up on his site questioning the use of mythology in astrological counseling. He writes:
While the planets themselves were named after the gods of the Greek pantheon centuries before horoscopic astrology came out of Alexandria, nowhere in any of the Hellenistic astrological texts is there made a direct correlation between the mythology of the gods and the significations of the corresponding planetary bodies that bare their names. The connection between the names of the celestial bodies and their corresponding myths in an interpretive astrological context does not appear to have been made in the western astrological tradition until sometime in the 20th century, and thus it is a relatively new innovation with respect to the history of horoscopic astrology as a whole. As a relatively recent development in the western tradition, this method of chart delineation should be reexamined within the context of ancient and contemporary astrological system alike in order to determine the applicability of mythology to the astrological construct as a whole, from both a theoretical and a practical standpoint.
Chris traces the use of mythological concepts in modern astrology to the work of Liz Greene, who of course has been a major influence in shaping my own transformational approach. Dr. Greene is a Jungian analyst who incorporates the use of archetypal language in her astrological interpretations, as do many other psychological astrologers. Chris adds,
Perhaps the archetypes or concepts inside of that consciousness are available for all of humanity to draw upon and they are somehow intertwined with the thoughts of the cosmic mind, as expressed by the movements of the celestial bodies. The archetypes are somewhat general in character though, because they are essentially broad, undirected concepts, of a universal nature and they are not as specifically focused because they occur everywhere in our world and not just through the specific language of astrology.
I have to say, though, that for me the use of the mythological archetypes goes beyond providing a methodology to explain the workings of the planets in our lives. To me the planets ARE living gods, each of whom have something to teach us. The Greek mythological sources are imperfect in their corrolation to the astrological symbolism of the planets, but an understanding of the nature of these gods is invaluable in processing the psychospiritual systems of the chart and the unfolding planetary cycles that we face day after day. What god are we working with? What does he or she come to teach? What gifts does this god seek from us? Understanding the chart in this manner opens up a new world of meaning to the client in a way that allows us to interact more significantly with the chart and our unfolding planetary cycles as well.

Mars/Pluto and nasty campaigning

Democratic primary goes even more negative as Mars opposes Pluto.

Republicans for Hillary

As a culture-watcher I found it fascinating that in Ohio Republicans were voting for Hillary Clinton in order to shore up a big win for John McCain in November.
"I voted for Hillary," said Republican Eric Klieber, 56, of Cleveland Heights. "John McCain has a better chance of beating her than Barack Obama. . . . If the Democratic race was decided, I'm sure a lot of them would vote for the candidate less likely to win."

Clinton was the defector's choice in Cincinnati, too. In Hyde Park, an affluent neighborhood, a volunteer for Clinton said a number of Republicans told her they voted for Clinton in hopes of seating a Republican in the White House in November.

"It doesn't bother me," Brenda Weaver said, while passing out campaign literature outside a church. "I say, 'Way to go, more votes for her!' "

John McClelland, a spokesman for the Ohio Republican Party, said he was unfazed by the anecdotes, "as long as they turn around and vote Republican in the fall." But some Republicans might have switched for good.

In Strongsville, middle-aged couple Lucy and Pete See - longtime Republicans - both voted for Clinton.

"I like that she has more experience in foreign affairs," Pete See said. "The Republican candidate was older than me."

Lucy See said she voted for Clinton as well. "I want to be part of making history," she said.
Evidently some of the Republican voters were following instructions given by Rush Limbaugh to vote for Hillary in order to weaken the Democrats. Heavily Republican Clermont county ran out of Democratic ballots due to the huge number of crossover voters:
Joy Mysonhimer, a poll worker in Miami Township, Clermont County, said that in her 40 years of working, she had never experienced anything like the shortage of Democratic ballots.

"An awful lot of Republicans went Democrat, and that had not been anticipated," she said. "They should have anticipated this."
This election season continues to look more and more bizarre, which will fit in nicely with the upcoming opposition of Uranus and Saturn on election day. The conjunction of transiting Pluto to the Midheaven in the US chart is just about exact, and transformation and power struggles are par for the astrological course.

Astrology and MI5

Secret papers just released tell the story of Louis deWohl, an astrologer and flamboyant character who was hired by the British secret service to cast horoscopes for Hitler and other Nazi leaders under the auspices of the "Psychological Research Bureau." John and Susan Townley were ahead of the curve on this one, posting this article back in 2006.

It has long been rumored that British intelligence utilized the help of an astrologer, mostly from legends disseminated by deWohl himself. Most authorities agree that deWohl was never a real astrologer, but instead served to assist the British government in convincing the US to enter World War II. His biography is riddled with rumor and falsehoods, including a stint as a Hollywood screenwriter and an intimate association with Hitler's astrologers.

It's unfortunate that the exposure of the real use of astrology by the military features such a fraudulent practitioner of the art. For more information on deWohl, see this excellent article from the UK Skyscript site.

Mars back into Cancer tomorrow

Mars, which had retrograded back into Gemini where warfare tends to be more verbal than physical, moves back into Cancer tomorrow. Mars has been in Cancer, where it is typically more hypersensitive and touchy, on and off since last November. Mars will make the final opposition to Pluto on March 6 and then move on to greener pastures.

While Mars is in Cancer, emotions are heightened and there is much more sensitivity evident in the world around us. Mars is said to be in its fall in Cancer and has difficulty expressing its warlike nature directly. Often anger and irritations tend to be suppressed and burst out inappropriately or with frustration.

Mars in Cancer also increases our drive to nurture, often through food, and to protect those less fortunate than ourselves, so we are likely to see a big push toward philanthropy over the next few months and perhaps an increased desire to feed the hungry. Sometimes our own frustration can masquerade as our frustration with the fates of others around us, and as with all water signs it can be somewhat difficult to know whose emotions are whose under this influence. Cancer's main concern is with emotional security, and Mars in Cancer wants to erect solid boundaries with which to secure the heart.

Mars will not be interacting much with other planets until it opposes Jupiter in late April, so it will be acting pretty independently where it will stay out of trouble for the most part.

Nerd Signs - the Y2K Compliant Horoscope

Thanks as always to Elsa's Top Ten for providing a link to this wonderful article:
zodiac version 2.0

Thousands of years ago, people in primitive cultures looked upwards and imagined patterns and signs in the stars that bespeckled the night sky, much the same way that stock traders and market analysts do with economic data today. They imagined the stars were arranged in the shapes of animals and people: Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, and Sagittarius, formed the zodiac that encircled the heavens.

The heavens may seem a permanent and unchanging creation, but over a span of thousands of years, the positions of the stars do change and the circumstances and infuences that affect our daily lives have changed even more. By the later part of the twentieth century, the movement towards universal deregulation led to an increasing pace of mergers, buyouts, and divestitures, often leaving zodiacal consumers uncertain of what their sign would be the next day or what level of support they could count upon.

At its peak, this celestial merger-mania was on the verge of dividing the cosmos between the signs of Microsoft and AT&T, leaving little room for individuality and variety in horoscopes. Cosmic consolidation to a mere two sun signs would be devastating for those who depend on their daily astrological forecast to plan their lives, predict romantic possibilities, and make investment and career decisions. Some analysts warned that if half the world's population were to receive unexpected checks all on the same day, the resulting chaos in the international banking system would be catastrophic--or at the very least result in inconveniently long lines at teller windows and ATMs.

After the initial "boom" times of celestial merger-mania, the need to curtail expenses led to many stars that had previously held high-level positions in major constellations being laid off. The likelihood that some of the less profitable star signs might be discontinued entirely--with a corresponding loss of support for people born during corresponding times of the year--was the last straw that caused the government to intervene.

To deal with growing consumer concerns and zodiacal vulnerability to possible future extragalactic competition, the US Justice Department and the FCSC (Federal Celestial Sphere Commission) worked out a plan to return the zodiac to its original complement of twelve signs, updated to be more relevant to the daily lives of people in the new millennium:

Cisco, the Router (February 19th ~ March 20th)

The router serves to bridge the gap between two worlds, a "gatekeeper" between our day-to-day earthly plane and the higher realm of the spirit or between the local intranet and the campus backbone or internet.

Persons born under the sign of the router feel an enhanced connection to planes other than the physical and can help bring enlightenment to others by filtering and guiding packets of spirituality to the people around them. The vulnerability of Ciscons (people born under the sign of Cisco) is that they may unwisely pick up evil packets from the other side as well and be subject to their influence and even fall victim to Denial-of-Spirituality (DoS) attacks coming from the darker planes of existence.

EDO, the RAM (March 21st ~ April 19th)

Quick to learn new things and energetic in taking on new tasks, people born under the sign of the RAM tend to lose interest in old or boring tasks if their excitement level is not frequently refreshed.

Possessed of a deep committment to fairness in their dealings with others, they strive to maintain parity in all their interactions and will immediately detect imbalance or error.

Hayes, the Modem (April 20th ~ May 20th)

Children born under this sign often appear aloof and uninterested to the casual aquaintance, but it's more accurate to say that one just has to make sure to get their attention first.

Because of this tendency towards shyness, they may find it difficult to negotiate a true connection with others and often experience compatibility problems until they're absolutely sure that those they deal with fully come up to their standards and the tone of their interactions is to their liking. But once such a connection is made, you can be sure they will be determined to hang on, at least until they drop you.

Control-ALT-Delete, the Reset Button (May 21st ~ June 20th)

Those born under the Control-Alt-Delete sign are capable of quick, on-the-fly decisions and immediate actions, sometimes followed by almost-but-not-quite immediate regrets. Impatient and possessed of highly active imaginations, emotions, and wit, they are always ready and eager to start a new project or restart a current one in a whole different way.

The Control-Alt-Delete-born are very tactile in nature, responding quickly and enthusiastically to being touched, but once they get started, it's difficult or even hazardous to try to interrupt or stop them before they feel that they're finished.

Pink Pearl, the Eraser (June 21st ~ July 22nd)

Despite being cautious and careful in their actions and decisions, people born under the sign of the Pink Pearl Eraser find themselves always having to clean up after the mistakes and messes of others and often wind up feeling crummy as a result.

When given enough care and attention, children of the Eraser are able to remain flexible and understanding despite the wear-and-tear of daily life; if left neglected too long, however, their attitude often becomes hard and brittle.

Pentium, the CPU (July 23rd ~ August 22nd)

Pentiums are fast thinkers and highly analytical, though in their haste, they're also given to skipping over details and making small math errors, particularly where fractions are concerned. They're also strongly emotional and if not given enough room to cool off, tend to get hotheaded and unstable. Never get on the wrong side of someone born under the sign of Pentium, because if you do, they'll get prickly and easily bent out-of-shape.

Pentiums always expect to be the center of attention and are natural leaders, automatically assuming that they are in charge and that everything will go through them.

DeepRock, the Water Cooler (August 23rd ~ September 23rd)

People born under this sign are cool and easy-going, not easily pressed into quick decisions or fast action, especially on Monday mornings, Friday afternoons, or during the week.

Water Coolers are good listeners and willing to lend a sympathetic ear, at least as long as your problems make for sufficiently juicy gossip.

Keuffel and Esser, the Slide Rule (September 24th ~ October 22nd)

People born under the sign of the Slide Rule have a particular talent for extending themselves to handle new problems and situations. They are able to look at problems, both small and large, and immediately keep the basic details in proportion.

Elegant and dependable, Slide Rules are known for keeping their cool and never letting on that they're being pulled too far until they reach their limit and abruptly fall apart.

Weller, the Soldering Iron (October 23rd ~ November 21st)

Those born under the sign of the Soldering Iron are both passionate and focused, capable of directing their intense firey passions towards a single goal. Others may see the intensity of their inner fire, be drawn to it, and wind up getting burned, because once a Wellerian has gotten heated up and is focused on a goal, he or she may be unaware of or uninterested in anything else.

To be happy, the Wellerian has to have someone close in his or her life who has extra energy to be drawn upon when needed, otherwise those born under this sign may become cold, withdrawn, and ineffective.

Custom Imprinted With Your Company Logo, the Pocket Protector (November 22nd ~ December 21st)

Children of the Pocket Protector are very security-oriented and careful to protect others, sometimes even at their own expense. Friends and family may accuse the Pocket Protector People in their lives of being "unadventurous" or "not spontaneous enough," but those born under the Custom Imprinted With Your Company Logo sign must strive to trust their own wisdom and hold to their chosen course, values, and priorities and not be swayed by those around them who might be more rash and less thorough in their thinking.

Quake, the Video Game (December 22nd ~ January 19th)

Energetic, imaginitive, and often heavily armed, Quakers keep finding themselves abruptly plunged into the midst of chaos and crossfire, and solving or blowing up the current batch of problems and crises may turn out to be only the harbinger of a new, more challenging level of bigger problems and crises.

Able to don many different hats or "skins" to cope with this wide array of problems, the child of the video game often still finds himself or herself really looking for an even bigger gun with which to take out opponents.

Tux, the Penguin (January 20th ~ February 18th)

Free and independent-thinking, those born under the sign of Tux the Penguin are quick with thoughts and ideas, even if the rest of the world might not understand the thoughts and ideas in question. Rather than express feelings and problems with loud and aggressive warning and error messages that are apparent to anyone, their inner settings may only be visible to those who know them and have learned where and how to probe for them.

When it comes to romantic relationships, many people assume that those born under this sign would be incompatible or too complex, or that they simply wouldn't serve their needs, but with proper care and patience--and a certain amount of tweaking and experimentation--those born under the sign of Tux, the Penguin, are compatible with many platforms and star signs.
